Driver Connect Technology – Powered by SYNC –
A smarter, safer, simpler way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives
The Revolution: MyFord The MyFord™ driver connect technology project began after a thorough review of current interior design – and its limitations – considering the abundance of new and emerging technologies. After studying vehicle communications trends and the ways drivers were using technology inside their vehicles, it was evident that the current way of interacting with car and truck technology was rapidly becoming obsolete. MyFord, along with MyLincoln™ will pioneer the next-generation vehicle experience for customers around the world.
MyFord Touch Driver Connect Technology MyFord Touch™ driver connect technology, powered by SYNC, replaces many of the traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges with clear, colorful LCD screens and 5-way buttons. The screens can be personalized to display information relevant to each individual driver using a simple button click, voice command or touch screen tap.
Changing Vehicle Interiors Modern vehicle interiors industry-wide have come a long way in terms of comfort, fit-and-finish and safety, but they’ve had a difficult time keeping up with the rapid growth of new infotainment technologies. Consumers are insisting on simpler interfaces even as they’re demanding more in-car connectivity, more options and more information – a dilemma known as “simplexity.” And the pace of advancement is expected to continue unabated, posing a growing problem for drivers and engineers alike.

5-Way Buttons
3
Found on MP3 players, mobile phones and even television remote controls, the 5-way button has become the most common multifunction control in modern electronics. MyFord uses 5-way buttons mounted on the steering wheel, naturally placed for a driver’s thumbs, to control menu commands and select functions.

Voice Control When using telephone prompt menus or the SYNC system in a Ford vehicle, advances in voice control have made speaking commands a common method of system control. MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch introduce new flattened grammar voice-control systems that simplify common commands and introduce voice control for more features, like audio tuning and climate control.
Color is used to give drivers intuitive visual cues between the central 8-inch MyFord Touch display and the instrument panelmounted 4.2-inch displays. Phone functions are always presented with an orange background, information with green, climate control with blue, and entertainment functions with red.
Touch Screens
pow er ed b y syn c
Appearing on more products every day, the touch screen is becoming the defacto standard for multifunction displays, replacing less-intuitive “soft keys.” MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch use an 8-inch touch screen to control four major in-vehicle systems: phone, navigation, climate control and entertainment.
Behind the displays of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, the next generation of the company’s award-winning SYNC system runs the show, built using Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Auto software platform. SYNC has evolved from a stand-alone module for communication and entertainment and has become a fully integrated operating system for Ford vehicles with MyFord Touch – a technology that will become the global operating system architecture for all future Ford products.

MyFord Touch with Sony Audio System An upgrade to the MyFord Touch system, MyFord Touch with Sony® Audio System adds a Sony-designed electronic finish panel with a high-gloss black finish and unique treatment of the touch-controlled buttons. The Sony panel is completely flat (except for the center knob), so the touch cells are executed as circular “landing zones” for the finger.
MyFord Touch with Sony Audio System: Premium audio complements the signature interface
MyLincoln Touch: Elegant and Powerful MyLincoln Touch also provides three full-color screens that offer a wide variety of information to the driver, along with touch-sensitive buttons and sliders for basic climate control switching and audio functions. MyLincoln Touch presents a softer, more muted color scheme to the driver, in keeping with Lincoln design standards, and will be the standard interior interface on all future Lincoln vehicles. The electronic finish panel on the 2011 Lincoln MKX demonstrates all the advantages of the new touch-sensitive technology in a beautiful, engaging package. When activated, the buttons display amber light. When turned off, the signature Lincoln White lighting is displayed.
MyLincoln Touch fi nish panel Consistent with Sony home audio products, the audio portion of the control panel is divided into “Source” and “Sound” sections, allowing customers to select the input (AM/FM radio, HD Radio™ broadcasts, CD, media players) and tune the sound with bass, treble, fade and balance inputs on the screen.

Key Features In addition to the features incorporated into the MyFord Touch system, MyFord Touch with Sony Audio System adds:
1 Sony-designed center stack panel with piano black finish.
2 Multifunction Sony controller dial for audio functions.
3 Unique touch-sensitive switches for selected vehicle functions.
K ey F eat u r es 1 Two 4.2-inch LCD screens flanking the central speedometer. 2 An 8-inch touch screen in the center stack provides control
of connected phones, navigation system, climate control and audio/entertainment functions.
3 Touch-sensitive switches for high-level climate control and audio functions.
4 Volume control touch “fingertip slider” bar – Lincoln exclusive. 5 Fan speed control touch “slider” bar – Lincoln exclusive.
u n iq u e s lide r controls In addition to the usual audio and climate control features, the touchsensitive technology also operates the volume and fan controls, which is unique to Lincoln. Customers can swipe along the volume slider to increase or decrease the volume, with a white chaser light following finger movements. There are 10 distinct touchpoints within the slider; three full swipes bring the system to maximum volume. Customers also can touch anywhere along the slider to get a corresponding increase or decrease in volume.

The Instrument Panel (IP) Displays MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch use two 4.2-inch LCD screens flanking the central speedometer to provide information to the driver at a glance. The displays can be adjusted and their contents personalized using the two steering wheel-mounted 5-way controllers for easy one-click changes.
Vehicle Personalization MyFord Touch and MyLincoln Touch make personalization at the touch of a button intuitive by using the 5-way controls on the steering wheel for most functions. Along with personalization, portability of display settings also is engineered into MyFord. Selected user settings can be programmed to individual vehicle keys. This allows two members of the same household to share a car; each can then have personalized settings take effect with his or her unique key. Settings also can be downloaded to a USB drive and exported to another MyFord-equipped vehicle, instantly transferring the driver’s preferences.
Home Screen Display
One-touch Climate Control
The 8-inch touch screen that forms the heart of MyFord Touch can be personalized using one of three available options:
1 Quiet: Basic information is shown nested in the four
L e ft D is p lay Vehicle information is presented in a 4.2-inch full-color LCD to the left of the centrally mounted speedometer. Many of the MyFord personalization functions are accessed through the left display, including driver assist settings, vehicle settings, gauge functions and units of temperature and measurement.
Ri ght Display The right display contains infotainment information: audio settings, climate control, phone communications and information menus. This information duplicates the information available on the central 8-inch touch screen display, though the function being controlled can differ from the main screen currently displayed on the 8-inch screen. For example, the driver could be choosing a song with the 5-way controller and IP display while the 8-inch touch screen shows the climate control screen.
Touch-Sensitive Switchgear MyFord uses touch-sensitive technology for many center stack media and climate controls. The technology uses “touch cells,” which create a miniature, undetectable electric field; a finger – even a thin-gloved one – breaks the field and causes the cell to go on or off like a traditional switch. Touch-sensitive switchgear means there are no true buttons to push – a tap or swipe of the finger does the job. Illumination, along with an audible beep, confirms activation. Depending on the trim level, touch cells on MyFord control items such as volume, radio seek, radio station tuning, CD track seek, defrosters and air conditioning.
corners, but the majority of the screen is devoted to a driver-selected “wallpaper” image.
2 Smart Corners: Predetermined buttons with the most popular top level functions are displayed in each of the quadrants.
3 Shortcuts: The screen is populated with driver-
selected “hot buttons” that are fully personalized, and can include hot buttons from nearly any controllable function in the system.

Since a couple sharing a car may have two very different preferences in the amount of information MyFord delivers, programmable keys help ensure each partner will get their particular home screen – and their particular MyFord experience – when they enter the car with their unique key.
3
Regardless of personalization level, the four main function corners and their respective colors remain the same, helping drivers intuitively navigate the vehicle systems.
Once a driver saves a temperature using MyTemp, any subsequent touch of the MyTemp button will automatically change to this set temperature. If other drivers have used the vehicle and adjusted settings, the driver can quickly and conveniently return to his or her preferred setting by touching the MyTemp button. Temperature settings also can be stored on multiple drivers’ unique keys as part of MyFord’s personalization features.
Vehicle Settings Personalization Vehicle information is presented in a 4.2-inch full-color LCD to the left of the centrally mounted speedometer. The display is controlled using the 5-way button located on the left side of the steering wheel, allowing drivers to intuitively access vehicle functions without having to reach for a dashmounted switch or remove their hands from the wheel. MyFord and SYNC: Technical Capabilities and Specifications
New Capabilities, Powered by SYNC Ford created a new generation of SYNC, which evolved with the expressed mission to control the functionality behind Ford’s new MyFord driver connect technology. MyFord was engineered to provide a safer, smarter way to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives. MyFord is an interface. Much like a PC monitor, keyboard and mouse are useless without a computer to which they can connect, MyFord needs SYNC as its CPU and operating system. As the brains behind MyFord, SYNC needed to conform to MyFord’s four core design principles: be connected; be clear; be attentive; be approachable. To accomplish that goal, the new generation of SYNC takes the best features from the original system and adds an array of new functionality, all controlled through the MyFord interface.
