NCAA 1987-88: First Dance The 1987-88 EMU Men’s Basketball Squad--The first-ever NCAA Division I tournament qualifier. FIRST DANCE After recording a fourth-place finish in the MidAmerican Conference in 1986-87, the Eastern Michigan University men’s basketball team entered the 1987-88 season with hopes of challenging for a league title. The then-Hurons did indeed win the school’s firstever MAC men’s basketball title, and a whole lot more, by the time the season officially came to a close, March 18, 1988, in Lincoln, Neb. Senior center Grant Long and freshman point guard Lorenzo Neely were the catalysts for an overachieving EMU squad that won the MAC regular season and post season titles, and qualified for the school’s first-ever NCAA-Division I Tournament appearance. With Long providing the inside scoring punch with a 23.2 scoring average and Neely running the offense as the point guard, the Hurons won the MAC’s regularseason title with a 14-2 record. Heading into the MAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed, the Green and White knocked off Western Michigan, 95-88, in the first round and handed Ohio University a 94-80 setback in the championship tilt. From there it was on to the Bob Devaney Sports Complex at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln for the NCAA regional. The No. 15-seeded Hurons squared off against the No. 2-seeded University of Pittsburgh in the first round March 18, 1988.The Panthers, paced by the highly touted threesome of Charles Smith (31 points), Demetreus Gore (24 points) and Jerome Lane (22), knocked off the Hurons by a 108-90 count. Eastern was led by guard Brad Soucie with 26. Long, in foul trouble from the start, was limited to 15 points. Neely added 18 points. A veteran group of players proved that chemistry is indeed important on a basketball team as the 1990-91 squad put EMU on the national basketball map with an extended run at the NCAA Championship. Playing with four seniors in the starting lineup, the 1990-91 team advanced all the way to the “Sweet 16” in the NCAA tournament before falling to national power North Carolina. During that wondrous run into the third round of the NCAA tournament, the Green and White used a combination of power basketball (Marcus Kennedy), high-flying acrobatics (the Thomas twins, Carl and Charles), end-to-end action (Lorenzo Neely and Kory Hallas) and a bench that was small in numbers but big on heart ( Joe Frasor and Roger Lewis) to capture the nation’s imagination as a true “Cinderella” team. Eastern was able to make it to the NCAA tournament after winning its second Mid-American Conference regular-season and post-season titles. As MAC tournament champion, Eastern was automatically in the NCAA field of 64 and was sent to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y., for the first round., seeded No. 12. Head Coach Ben Braun’s crew came up with two big wins in Syracuse. In the first game, Eastern knocked off No. 5 seed Mississippi State, 76-56, and followed that up with a 71-68 overtime win over No. 13 seed Penn State. Those victories propelled EMU into the “Sweet 16” where the No. 1 seeded Tarheels of North Carolina, turned back a charged-up EMU team, 93-67. Carl Thomas was magnificent against North Carolina, scoring 27 points in 33 minutes to earn a spot on the All-Regional team. A young Eastern squad finished third in the Mid-American Conference regular season but came on strong in the league’s postseason tournament before bowing to Ball State in the championship game. With Ball State and Ohio receiving NCAA bids, the Green and White anxiously awaited a call from the NIT. Eastern got the nod from the NIT and was sent to Peoria, Illinois, to face off against the Bradley Braves. The Eagles made their first-ever NIT a memorable one with a heartbreaking 86-85 double-overtime loss to Bradley. With 0:34 left in regulation and trailing by three, EMU guard Brian Tolbert connected on a three-point field goal to tie it and force the first overtime. Eastern raced out to a 76-72 lead in the early stages of the first OT before Bradley rallied to tie at with 0:05 left, making a second overtime a necessity. The Eagles held an 85-84 lead after Theron Wilson made two free throws but Bradley won the game with 0:07 left on two free throws. Eastern had four players in double figures, led by Brian Tolbert with 23, Theron Wilson adding 20, Kareem Carpenter, 19 and Earl Boykins, 13. The 1995-96 Eagles turned in one of the most memorable seasons in school history, notching their third regular-season and postseason MAC titles and qualifying for a third appearance in the NCAA tournament. Bowen Field House was charged with electricity Sunday, March 12, 1996, when the EMU squad, along with a huge group of fans and supporters, was on hand for the nationally televised NCAA Pairings Show. The packed house of fans roared with excitement and anticipation when it was announced that Eastern Michigan and Duke would be opponents in the Southeast Regional to be played at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, Ind. The Duke Blue Devils entered the game seeded No. 8 while the underdog Eagles of Eastern Michigan were seeded No. 9. Playing before a raucous crowd of 31,373 in the RCA Dome, along with a national television audience, the Eastern backcourt tandem of Earl Boykins (23 points) and Brian Tolbert (20) dominated, while Derrick Dial added 12 up front to lead the Eagles to a 75-60 decision in the first round. The second-round matchup had Eastern squaring off against No. 1-seeded Connecticut. The Eagles came out with a vengeance against the heavily favored Huskies, racing to a 13-point lead, 32-19, with 12:09 left in the first half. Eastern held a 48-47 halftime lead. The second half belonged to UConn, however, as the Huskies out scored EMU by a 48-33 margin for the 95-81 win. Those 1997-98 Eagles seemed to have it all. Eastern possessed one of the most dynamic backcourts in the country in Earl Boykins and Derrick Dial. Add to that a veteran front line of Jon Zajac, James Head and Nkechi Ezugwu, and the Eagles were ready for postseason action. That group of four seniors, Boykins, Dial, Head and Ezugwu, had gone through the NIT wars as freshmen, and were joined by transfer Zajac in time for the NCAA Big Dance in 1995-96, where the Eagles gained a national reputation with an upset win over Duke before falling to No. 1 seed UConn. Yet, despite a brilliant 22-10 record in 1996-97, the Eagles sat home at tournament time. That postseason snub worked on the competitive egos of the Eagles and they responded with three great outings and won the Mid-American Conference postseason tournament title and the crown of MAC Champions. As the MAC representative to the NCAA Tournament, Eastern had hopes of making some noise at the dance, and when it was announced that EMU would meet Michigan State in the first-round game in Hartford, Conn., the players were excited to get a shot at the Big Ten Co-Champion Spartans. With a national television crowd watching, and a sellout crowd of 16,105 on hand in the Hartford Civic Center, the No. 13- seeded Eagles displayed the poise that they had exhibited over the past four years, racing to an early, 16-9 lead. No. 4 seeded Michigan State then went to its huge size advantage and shut down the Eagles and record an 83-71 win. Dial closed out his brilliant career with a game-high 29 points to go along with eight boards while his backcourt mate, Boykins, was held to 18 points in his final game for the Eagles. After winning their first game, the Hurons get knocked out in the second round by Guilford. Earle Higgins gets drafted in both the NBA and fledgling ABA, by Harvey San Francisco and Marlatt Indiana, respectively, while Harvey Marlatt is the No. 16 pick of Earle the Detroit Pistons. Higgins 1897-98 • Men’s basketball is introduced at Michigan State Normal School. The team is 1-1 in games against the University of Detroit. 1901-02 • Michigan State Normal leaves the MIAA. 1916-17 • Captain Ernest Rynearson leads the team to a 15-1 record with the only loss a 37-23 decision to the Grand Rapids YMCA. 1920-21 • The school’s athletic teams decide to rejoin the MIAA. 1945-46 • Elton J. Rynearson, Sr. gives up the basketball coaching job after serving for 18 years and leaves as the winningest head coach in school history with a 160-129 winloss record. 1955-56 • Eastern Michigan begins play in Bowen Field House. The 79,529-square foot structure is built at a cost of $1.25 million. First season in Bowen Field House 1966-67 • Eastern Michigan leaves the President’s Athletic Conference and becomes an independent. 1967-68 • Head Coach Jim Dutcher leads EMU to the first of four consecutive NAIA National Championships and EMU makes the quarterfinals in that tournament. Eastern’s Earle Higgins hits a buzzer-beater to knock off No. 1 seed Stephen F. Austin in the first round. Jim Dutcher 1968-69 • Eastern Michigan wins its second straight NAIA District Championship and advances to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, where the Hurons make it to the second round. 1970-71 • Led by Kennedy McIntosh, the Hurons advance all the way to the finals in the NAIA National Championships before losing to Kentucky State, 102-82. McIntosh becomes the No. 1 round draft choice of the Chicago Bulls in the National Basketball Association (NBA). On July 15, 1971, Eastern Michigan University proudly becomes a new member of the Mid-American Conference. Kennedy McIntosh (54) 1971-72 • Eastern Michigan records an outstanding 24-7 record for the season. The Hurons win the NCAA-College Division Regional Championship and advance to the Final Four in Evansville, Ind. Center Grant Long is drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Miami Heat after earning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year honors. The EMU players celebrate a win during the “Sweet 16” run. 1994-95 • A young Eastern Michigan squad finishes third in the regular MAC season and makes it to the finals of the postseason league tournament before bowing to Ball State. The Eagles accept a bid to the school’s first-ever National Invitation Tournament (NIT) and come up with an outstanding effort before losing an 86-85 double-overtime decision at Bradley. Grant Long is named MAC Player of the Year 1990-91 •How sweet it was. EMU not only won its second MAC regularseason and tournament championships but also qualified once again for the NCAA National Tournament. Led by a talented group of four seniors, the Green and White knock off Mississippi State and Penn State in the East Regional in Syracuse to advance to the “Sweet 16.” Eastern runs into national power North Carolina, who ends the Cinderella story in the Meadowlands, 93-67. Marcus Kennedy earns Player of the Year honors in the Mid-American Conference. Boone joins EMU after 14 very successful seasons as an intercollegiate head coach. In those years as a head coach, Boone is one of the winningest coaches in the country with an overall record of 273-137. He was the head coach at California University of Pennsylvania for 10 seasons and the head coach at Robert Morris College for four years prior to taking over the EMU duties. He led California University of Pennysylvania to five NCAA Division II tournament appearances. 2005-06 • Former EMU assistant coach, and EMU graduate Charles E. Ramsey, returns home as the head coach of the Eagles. Ramsey was named EMU’s 28th men’s head basketball coach before a jam-packed press conference, March 30, 2005, in Media Room A of the Convocation Center. Ramsey was a member of the EMU men’s basketball staff from 1990-93. He graduated from EMU in 1992. 1998-99 • The Eagles dedicate the $29.6-million Convocation Center Dec. 9, when the University of Michigan visits. The visitors spoil the night, however, taking an 8663 win before a crowd of 7,647. 1999-00 • The Eagles finish the season with a 15-13 record.
