Water Disinfection across the Globe Chemicalfree Water Treatment NECON GmbH NECON GmbH — A company combining expertise with responsibility Founded in 1981 by Dr.-Ing. Klaus Gebhardt as an engineering company for automation technology and metal design, NECON GmbH is today a leading supplier worldwide in the area of chemical-free water disinfection and innovative swimming pool equipment. Dedicated to providing a safe, ecofriendly and cost-effective alternative to chemical water treatment, NECON GmbH has conducted intensive research for many years, in cooperation with renowned scientists and laboratories. With the „NECON System“, a centuries-old principle of electrophysical water treatment has been finally redefined, engineered to production-maturity and patented. NECON GmbH offers both private and public pool operators a broad range of products for numerous applications, including whirlpools, compact water tanks and swimming pools up to Olympic-size facilities. -2- NECON C he m icalf r e e Wate r Tr e atment Made in Germany TABLE OF CONTENTS TABLE OF CONTENTS Functional Principle Page 4-5 Comparison Chlorine / Ionisation Page 6 Certificates / Laboratory Tests Page 7 Representations / References Page 8-11 Projects Page 12-13 Legionella Treatment Page 14 Water Treatment Systems B21010, B21011, B21012 Page 15 Measuring and Control Technology A1000, A2000, A7000, A8000 Page 16-27 Komplett-Technik D1000, D7000 Page 28-31 N E C ON C h e m i c a l f r e e Wate r Tr e atm e nt M ade in Germany -3- FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLE Due to intensive cooperation with renowned scientists and laboratories, NECON have successfully redefined the centuries-old principle of electrophysical water treatment. Every effort has been made to meet the specification of 100% chemical-free operation. With the use of innovative electrode materials and configurations, we have been able to overcome the problems of the fluctuation of pH values and the related for mation of limescale. Analytical data sampled from NECON GmbH projects in the public swimming pool sector worldwide attest best possible water quality. The NECON system consists of a state-of-the-art microprocessor-controlled electronic unit and the patented disinfection electrodes. Within just fractions of a second, the positively charged copper and silver ions form electrostatic bonds with the negatively charged areas of the cell walls of the microorganisms. This process alters the permeability of their cell walls to such an extent that the normal nutrient intake of the microorganisms is impaired. Once copper and silver penetrate an algae or germ cell, they attack the sulphur-based amino acids in the cell proteins required by the cell for photosynthesis. As a result, the cells dies. For this reason, electrophysical water disinfection is one of the most common alternatives to the conventional „chemical warfare“. -4- NECON C he m icalf r e e Wate r Tr e atment Made in Germany FUNCTIONAL PRINCIPLE Other advantages are that it provides natural, odourless, soft and skin-friendly water which is ideal for children and in health care. Silver has already been known for centuries to destroy bacteria and viruses, even those which are resistant to chlorine. Silver sulphate is frequently used in the antibacterial treatment of burns and open wounds and even protects newborns against infection. Copper as a trace element plays a vital role in human metabolism. Copper is essential to the activity of many proteins and enzymes. It promotes the formation of skin pigments and has important functions in bone metabolism and in the central nervous system. As the body is not itself capable of producing copper, it must obtain copper from nutrients (such as vegetables, wholemeal bread, nuts and oats), while copper intake through liquids is generally low. The levels of copper required for swimming pool disinfection and prevention of algae vary between 0.5 and 0.7 mg/l. For comparison: While the German DIN standards for treatment of swimming pool water do not regulate this aspect at all, the country‘s rigid drinking water regulations decree a maximum copper concentration of 2 mg/l. Any surplus copper ions ingested by adults will be excreted. The most important advantage of copper and silver ions is that they persist in the water, providing complete protection by purifying the water without the use of any toxins over a lengthy period of time. Even after the filter system has been switched off, this depot effect lasts for several months. Thus, there is no need for repetitive monitoring and readjustments requiring attendance. The NECON water treatment system is straightforward to operate and requires only minimal maintenance. It has been demonstrated that copper and silver ions eliminate Cryptosporidium, E. coli, coliforms, Pseudomonas and legionellae as well as many other species of bacteria and germs. This water disinfection technique can be used in practically all situations where lasting disinfection of bacteria, viruses and algae is required. It is already employed in thousands of swimming pools and whirlpools. N E C ON C h e m i c a l f r e e Wate r Tr e atm e nt M ade in NECON systems are supplied for public as well as private sector swimming pools with sizes of up to 3000 m³. Subsequently, the previously unknown causative bacterium was named Legionella. Without proper treatment, the disease may have mortal consequences especially for the elderly and people with immunodeficiencies. Natural habitat of Legionalla bacteria Legionella bacteria thrive primarily in warm water with temperatures between 30°C and 45°C (86–113°F). Hot water supplies are probably the most prolific of everyday sources of Legionalla and constitute a potentially serious health hazard especially in public facilities such as in hotels, swimming pools, school buildings, hospitals and retirement homes. Infection paths Legionalla are transmitted via aerosols, and may reach the lung system by inhalation or aspiration of mist droplets containing the bacteria. Infection sources include installations and devices like showers and whirlpools, air conditioners and air dampers or inhalators, but also facilities like cooling towers or greenhouses with overhead sprinkling. PREVENTIVE MEASURES The application of copper and silver ions is regarded as the most effective means of disinfection since it provides long-lasting protection. During employment in hospitals it proved to be nonpolluting and safe to use. Furthermore this methode is cost-efficient due to its straightforward usage and since piping systems will not become affected by corrosion. - 14 - NECON Study excerpt Corrosive Toxic damage to pipes Tempera- pH-sen- Scale High Easy recolo- Resituresitive build-up energy nization after dual sensitive consump- treatment effect tion Easy application Thermal shock yes no yes yes yes yes yes no no Not suitable for big facilities Scalding dangerous Constant maintenance of high temperature yes no no yes yes yes yes no no Not suitable for big facilities Scalding dangerous Periodic chlorination yes yes yes yes yes no yes no no Handling precautions effluent restrictions Shock hyperchlorination yes yes yes yes yes no yes no no Handling precautions effluent restrictions Continuous chlorination yes yes yes yes yes no yes yes no Handling precautions effluent restrictions Chlorine dioxide yes yes yes yes yes no yes yes no Handling precautions esp. as to explosion risk Monochloramine yes yes yes yes yes no yes yes no Handling precautions under research Ionisation no no no no no no no yes yes Very efficient including long term protection after treatment Hydrogen peroxide + silver no yes yes yes no no yes yes no Further experimental validation required Ultraviolet light no no no yes no yes yes no yes Insufficient as sole method due to lack of residual protection C he m icalf r e e Wate r Tr e atment Made in Germany MEASURING AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGY Measurement system copper No. B21012 Colour comparison test kit for copper level analysis, in set case.
