NetApp Solutions for DBA Pain Points DBA Activity DBA Pain Points NetApp Solution Data model definition and creation Changing underlying storage to match changes in the data model can be painful and time consuming. Flexible storage model that is easy to change to fit data model changes. Database/object creation and modification Creating duplicates of databases is time consuming, difficult and uses valuable storage resources. Easy, space-efficient, and relatively inexpensive way to make copies of a database for testing, QA and development. The key feature that facilitates this is FlexClone ™ software. Capacity analysis and planning Accurately estimating storage requirements for databases is difficult. Over or under allocation of storage resources happens frequently. Easy allocation, expansion, or contraction of storage using NetApp FlexVol ™ technology. Changing predefined storage allocations can be difficult and time consuming. It also introduces the potential for data loss. Seamlessly spread database data and transaction log files across multiple disk spindles, resulting in optimum performance. (FlexVol) Virtually eliminate the potential for data loss and database down time with NetApp RAID-DP ™ technology and filer clustering. Database backup and recovery Backup images consume valuable storage resources. Use NetApp storage architecture, OS and Snapshot ™ technology to: The process used to produce backup images is typically very time and system resource intensive. • Reduce the time required to take backups to less than one minute Production systems may have to be taken off-line while a backup image is made, resulting in loss of productivity. • Keep production databases running while taking backups • Significantly reduce the amount of disk space needed to maintain backup images • Reduce restore times by taking more frequent backups Because of the overhead involved, backup images are not generated frequently, resulting in longer recovery times when a database must be restored. Quickly restore a database from a Snapshot backup image with NetApp SnapRestore ® technology. Securely retain backup images for long periods of time to meet compliance requirements with NetApp SnapVault ™ technology. Database disaster recovery planning Maintaining full copies of data for recovery purposes consumes lots of valuable storage resources. Create a mirrored image of a database on a separate system that can be stored off-site with SnapMirror ® technology. Keeping backup copies synchronized with current data is complex, difficult and expensive. By synchronizing this mirrored copy with the primary database at regular intervals, the mirror copy can become the primary database environment in the event the original database environment is destroyed or severely damaged. DBA Activity DBA Pain Points NetApp Solution Database performance turning Storage can not keep up with the response times required in application Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Database performance can be improved measurably and quickly because NetApp filers make use of all available spindles for both the data and transaction logs. Duplicate copies of the database are needed to maintain availability set out in SLAs. Storage can be a bottleneck to database performance. Both database data and transaction log files can be spread across multiple disk spindles, resulting in optimum performance. (FlexVol) Fragmentation of the database data on the storage disk system can negatively impact performance. Database maintenance Duplicating data for testing software migrations, bug fixes, upgrades or patches is time consuming, costly and uses valuable storage resources. Migrating databases to newer RDBMS versions without negatively impacting the databases being migrated. Re-allocation of storage is difficult and time consuming.
