NetVault Backup for NetApp Advanced Protection for Enterprise Storage Systems When designing a data protection strategy for NetApp filers, no doubt you’re thinking about how to back up your data with zero impact on performance, restore data as fast as possible, and minimize consumption of storage space. NetApp has developed a number of leading technologies to help address these challenges, ™ ® ® including NetApp Snapshot Manager, SnapVault , and SnapMirror . NetVault Backup complements these NetApp technologies, creating a comprehensive solution that combines the management of NetApp operations with advanced backup and recovery. With NetVault Backup, you can simplify your data protection practices and reduce infrastructure and administration costs. NetVault is built upon an advanced modular architecture that provides IT managers the flexibility required to support continued growth and incorporate new enhancements rapidly as information storage needs expand and change. NetVault is able to operate in multi-vendor networks and supports a broad range of platforms, applications, and storage devices.
Key Benefits Centralize management and control Consolidated data protection to maximize storage use Shorten backup windows Back up filers locally without sending data over the network Reduce infrastructure and migration costs Achieve faster recovery times Reduce administrative costs and complexity
Recovering a stored snapshot using the NetVault Backup Plug-in for Snapshot Manager is an easy click-and-go operation
NetVault Backup for NetApp SnapMirror-to-Tape NetApp’s SnapMirror is a data replication solution that mirrors mission-critical data from a primary site to a secondary location using standard IP networks. It provides many benefits to system administrators, including reduced backup and recovery windows, instant access to mission-critical data, and file system replication at a local or remote site. Working in conjunction with NetApp’s SnapMirror technology, NetVault Backup extends these benefits by enabling volumes to be mirrored and backed up to tape. Moving mirror volumes to tape saves disk space and makes it easy to send data offsite for long-term archival storage. Centralized management Reduce administrative costs and complexity by scheduling SnapMirror transfers, initiating backups to tape, and recovering volumes all through the NetVault Backup management console. Back up to tape Transfer entire mirrors of a volume to tape, which allows for offsite archive and disaster recovery (DR) readiness. Copy functionality Use copies as an alternative transport mechanism and provide long term, off-site archival storage volumes. Data stored on the filer can be quickly backed up with virtually no service disruption. Snapshots can be stored on same filer as the data being protected to provide fast data recovery. This flexibility enables you to maximize NetApp filer utilization to reduce hardware costs. Block-level, incremental backup Perform incremental backups of only changed blocks on a selected volume or snapshot and store them on tape. Backups are much faster and consume less storage space. Disaster recovery and data migration for primary and secondary storage Enjoy quick recovery of entire volumes. Large volumes of data can be restored or migrated. Deduplicated format Reduce its archive storage footprint and maximizes media utilization NetVault Backup archives data in deduplicated format when NetVault SmartDisk is used as the backup target.
NetVault Backup for NetApp Snapshot Manager NetVault Backup Plug-in for Snapshot Manager enables you to generate, automatically schedule and recover snapshots through the NetVault Backup GUI, simplifying network appliance filer snapshot management. Centralized management Reduce administrative costs and complexity by generating snapshots, creating recurring snapshot schedules, and recovering snapshots through the NetVault Backup management console. Create instantaneous backup and recovery points Quickly back up and recover data as needed, which reduces management costs and improves service levels. Online recovery from local snapshots Quickly restore from local snapshots, ensuring you’re able to meet even the most aggressive recovery objectives.
NetVault Backup Plug-in for NetApp SnapVault Manager NetApp’s SnapVault is a disk-based storage backup feature of NetApp’s Data ONTAP operating system. It enables data on one filer to be backed up by another filer. This data is saved as a snapshot in read-only format. NetVault Backup enables you to manage and monitor NetApp’s SnapVault technology with an intuitive user interface. Centralized management Reduce administrative costs and complexity by backing up and recovering SnapVault data from the NetVault Backup management console. Block-level, incremental backup Get faster backups and save on storage space. Only changed blocks are transferred from primary filers. Nearline recovery from SnapVault backups You can recover from a remote disk, which enables you to have a secondary recovery medium. Open system OSSV integration Consolidate data protection for heterogeneous application and file servers into one platform, maximizing storage use.
