A data zone is defined as a single NetWorker Server with multiple clients and optional Storage Node(s). Storage Nodes enable load sharing within a data zone in large data centers, across departments, and throughout branch offices. In addition, Storage Nodes allow LAN-free protection of large servers to improve network, backup, and recovery performance. Clients can be backed up to any Storage Node(s) or backup server, via a LAN, WAN, or SAN. NetWorker enables administrators to centrally manage and automate backup operations within a data zone, while applying varying storage management policies for individual clients. LEGATO offers four NetWorker Server editions, each providing a level of service designed to meet the differing size, complexity, and budget parameters of computing environments. Users can also seamlessly migrate from one edition to another as their data protection needs grow. Backup policies, configurations, tape usage, and recovery capabilities are fully maintained. Specialized NetWorker Options NDMP Client Connections utilize the Network Data Management Protocol to protect today’s most widely used NAS devices in native format, with optimal flexibility for minimizing backup and recovery time, maximizing library investments, and consolidating storage. Data can be protected locally, remotely to NAS or UNIX/Windows-attached libraries, to networkattached libraries, and across a Fibre Channel SAN, as well as cloned to tape for Disaster Recovery. Directory level recovery and DAR (Direct Access Restore) support delivers file restores as much as five times faster than nonsupporting backup applications. DiskBackup™ Option delivers faster recovery, faster backups, and lower TCO by leveraging high capacity, high-speed disk arrays including JBOD, RAID and specialized SAN/NAS devices. Users enjoy complete NetWorker functionality to perform backups to disk, stage backups from disk, or clone backups from disk. Data can be recovered from disk devices that are engaged in backups. Also, once a saveset (backup stream) has been written to disk, it can be automatically migrated to tape (staging), or copied to tape or disk (cloning), while other savesets are still being backed up. Staging and cloning operations can be completed in a fraction of the time compared to traditional tape backups, as they only lag behind the backup of the last saveset, not the entire environment. NetWorker’s media database continuously tracks all backup locations so that data can be restored directly to clients in a single step. Dynamic Drive Sharing (DDS) Option allows tape drives on a Fibre Channel SAN to be shared within a single data zone among a NetWorker Server, Storage Node(s), and/or NDMP-compliant NAS. Using DDS, SAN environments achieve faster time to backup and recovery and increase ROI of backup storage. DDS also supports a broad range of clustering technologies. LEGATO NetWorker Archive adds file-level archiving and file grooming capabilities to NetWorker. NetWorker Archive migrates important data to tape for off-site storage and automatically removes the archived file from disk to free valuable storage space. The archived files are tracked in the NetWorker client file index database for ease of restoration. NetWorker Modules Autochanger/Silo Software Modules enable hands-free, automated data protection using a wide variety of autochangers. Modules are licensed according to the number of slots supported by the robotic device: 1-9, 1-16, 1-20, 1-32, 1-40, 1-64, 1-128, 1-256,1-400, 1-512, 1700 and unlimited slots. Silo Software Modules interface with mainframe-class storage systems from IBM, StorageTek, and EMASS. LEGATO NetWorker NetWorker Application Modules provide automated, online protection and granular recovery for popular databases, messaging and ERP applications including Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Informix, Sybase, Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes/Domino, and SAP. These modules replace the need to develop and maintain custom scripts and are fully integrated with vendor specific APIs to achieve 24x7 application access, ensure application integrity, and provide reliable protection. LEGATO Open File Manager enables backup of open application files, mail files, and user files residing on Windows and NetWare servers. It ensures that a consistent copy of these files is backed up even when files are locked or open, or in deny or write modes. LEGATO NetWorker SnapImage™ Module delivers a high-performance backup solution that maximizes tape throughput speed and Power Edition minimizes backup completion times when protecting multitudes of small files on Windows and UNIX systems. Backups are performed live at the block level with no user lock-out. Data recovery can be performed at an image, directory, or file level. LEGATO NetWorker PowerSnap™ enables Oracle users to take multiple snapshot backups in seconds, recover a database in minutes, and/or perform serverless backups to tape or disk for disaster recovery. The application interface ensures database integrity during snapshot backups and facilitates database recovery. The storage interface interacts with hardware snapshot technology to automatically activate logical or physical snapshots. NetWorker PowerSnap solutions are currently available for Oracle on Network Appliance, EMC Symmetrix, and EMC CLARiiON storage. Complementary LEGATO Applications Optimize Data Protection and Storage Resources LEGATO DiskXtender™ solutions offer virtually infinite storage capacity while reducing the total cost of data ownership. On average, 80% of data residing on primary disk is considered “inactive”. By utilizing a DiskXtender automated hierarchical storage management (HSM) solution in a NetWorker environment, backups and recoveries can be reduced to one-fifth the time, with equal savings in tape (or disk backup) costs. DiskXtender is supported in UNIX, Linux and Windows environments utilizing DAS, NAS and SANs. LEGATO NetWorker Management Console delivers a centralized, browser-based solution to increase management efficiency, ensure reliable protection of storage assets, and lower total cost of ownership in small and large heterogeneous enterprise environments. From either Netscape Communicator or Microsoft I.E, users can remotely administer a NetWorker environment, manage NetWorker servers across the globe from a single interface, and generate more than 40 enterprise class reports. LEGATO NetWorker Operations delivers a comprehensive, easy-to-use interface for managing NetWorker backup operations to maximize operator productivity and free system administrators from time-consuming, routine NetWorker tasks. To ensure NetWorker user security, NetWorker Operations enables system administrators to limit operator access to specified NetWorker servers and administrative privileges. Operator level reports deliver informative, reliable data to help make strategic resource decisions and optimize IT staff performance. LEGATO NetWorker Availability assures the availability of NetWorker services to achieve high data protection service levels. If a NetWorker service fails or becomes unresponsive, the NetWorker server will automatically restart and the backup will restart from the beginning of the interrupted saveset. Optional failover of a NetWorker Server to a second server can be provided in the event restarts are unsuccessful. NetWorker Availability also continuously monitors resources in the NetWorker environment to automatically alert administrators when thresholds are exceeded and provide historical usage patterns to optimize configurations. LEGATO AlphaStor™ is a mainframe-class media management application that automates the entire media life cycle from tape inception to vault, as well as enable library and device sharing among NetWorker Data Zones. Designed for open systems data centers that must address rapid storage growth while controlling costs, AlphaStor simplifies administration, while significantly reducing the costs of managing storage.
