TWO-WAY RADIO BASICS Which is better UHF or VHF? UHF offers the best coverage and penetration inside buildings or outdoors. VHF is fine in flat open areas or around wood structures.
FCC LICENSE The FCC regulates all wireless devices. Business and GMRS radios require an FCC license which is good for 10 years and renewable. Violators are subject to fines. We will process this complicated application for you. Contact us at 800-248-5391 for pricing or more information.
How much power do I need? Power is a major factor in achieving the range and coverage in a particular structure as well as providing a clear, crisp signal that is easy to understand. Coverage is improved as power is increased.
FCC NARROWBAND MANDATE In an effort to achieve more efficient use of radio spectrum, the FCC mandated all VHF and UHF Public Safety, Industrial and Business users must change from 25 kHz bandwidth to 12.5 kHz narrowband by January 1, 2013. Violations are subject to fines. All radios in this catalog are 12.5 kHz narrowband capable - CLS, CLP, RDU, RDV, AXU, AXV, XU, XV, GT. (DTR Series radios use frequencies not requiring a FCC license and are exempt from the narrowband mandate.) If you have a different model or need help changing settings, refer to the owner’s manual, www.acsspirit.com or call us at 800-248-5391. If you have a FCC license, we can assist with modification to be narrowband compliant.
How many channels do I need? One channel per work group is typical. Use multi-channels to separate multiple workgroups. Examples: Managers, shipping, manufacturing, maintenance, security, general & sub contractors, different departments such as stock, customer service, etc. Will current Motorola radios talk to older models and other brands? Yes, as long as the frequencies and codes match.
How many two-way radios can be used together? There is no limit.
How rugged are Motorola two-way radios? These radios are built rugged for all day business use and meet Motorola’s accelerated life testing including a 5 foot drop to concrete on all six sides.
INEXPENSIVE FRS/GMRS WALKIE-TALKIES While recreational models are inexpensive, their cost to use is typically 2 to 4 times greater than business models over time. Units and batteries are replaced often. GMRS radios require an FCC license just as business models, but are not legal for business use. Violators are subject to fines.
Can they be used with repeaters and base stations? CLP, RDU 4 Watt, RDV 5 Watt and AX models are dealer programmable to work with repeaters and base stations. See page 8 for the Range Extender/Repeater.
RANGE & COVERAGE Range is determined by several factors • UHF provides the best coverage in and around buildings, especially steel and concrete structures and large industrial or multi-story buildings. A 2 watt UHF will provide greater coverage inside industrial buildings than a 5 watt VHF. • VHF is good for outdoor “line of sight” applications and inside wood structures • Power More power provides greater coverage and penetration • Obstructions Structures, metal, steel and concrete reduce range and coverage
