ENCOM Wireless, the leader in wireless traffic equipment, is proud to announce the release of the Safe School System. Safe School is a complete, end-to-end, wireless centralized management system for school-zone flashing beacons. “ENCOM has always been at the forefront of wireless technology. Now, we have combined our cutting-edge wireless systems with state-of-the-art central management software to create the most powerful, and feature-rich, school-zone-flashingbeacon management system in the world,” says Dan Szgatti, Business Development Manager of ENCOM Wireless. The Safe School System consists of three major components: 1. Zone Watch: Central Management Software provides a simple-to-use interface for monitoring and controlling all school-zone beacons from one central location. Schedule updates can be downloaded to a group of beacons with a touch of a button. Confirmation of schedule receipt, along with beacon-health status, is available at specified intervals or at a glance. Zone Watch Software Graphic:
3. WBCU (Wireless Beacon Control Unit): At the heart of every WBCU is ENCOM’s industry-leading 900MHz wireless technology along with an integrated real-time clock. The WBCU has been designed as a “plug-andplay” replacement for existing stand-alone or pager-controlled time clocks and is pin-for-pin compatible with existing cabinet wiring, minimizing installation time. This solution is ideal for a wide variety of data acquisition and SCADA applications such as monitoring and controlling pole-top transformers; reclosers and capacitor banks for utilities; pumps, compressors and flow meters in oil and gas production; and remote PLCs and measurement devices in water, wastewater and heavy industrial markets. The MDS SD2 provides high network availability and reliability to support critical communications to remote assets. This solution dramatically increases network flexibility with options that allow users to implement IP/Ethernet, secure AES 128-bit encryption, and multiple protocols on their networks. It supports a wide array of network topologies over varied terrain and can meet user requirements using less equipment, leading to a lower cost of ownership. Multiple applications can operate on a single network simultaneously, including remote device configuration and data polling. MDS SD2 also includes two serial ports, provides broad coverage over distances up to 50 miles, and supports a low-power sleep mode for solar and battery powered applications. The MDS SD Series of industrialstrength data communications products offer secure, reliable, long distance transmission of data for mission critical applications. The higher transmit power used by the SD to operate in the licensed 200 MHz (MDS SD2), 400 MHz (MDS SD4) and 900 MHz (MDS SD9) frequencies results in a wide area of coverage. The SD’s exceptional receiver sensitivity allows for deployment in applications where obstructions, such as trees and buildings, would limit the effectiveness of other wireless devices. MDS SD Series radios can be directly added to existing MDS x710 and x790 systems, providing both “drop-in” compatibility for expansions and replacements, and adding Ethernet support. ComNet Simplifies Convergence All New Video, Data and Ethernet over Optical Fiber Product to Debut Communication Networks of Danbury, Connecticut, doing business as ComNet, a manufacturer of fiber optic transmission and networking equipment, has introduced a new fiber optic transmission product designed to aid in the transition from point-to-point systems to Ethernet network systems. The FVT/FVR10D1E Series are fiber optic video transmitters and receivers that support digitally encoded video, serial data as well as 10/100 Ethernet. The ComNet FVT/FVR10D1E is unique in that it provides 10-bit digitally encoded RS-250C Short-Haul quality video, serial data and 10/100 Ethernet on one single optical fiber. This model offers the user a solution for current requirements where high-quality video is needed, but future expansion and upgrades will necessitate the use of Ethernet. The FVT/FVR10D1E maximizes user flexibility and provides cost savings when future system upgrades are called for. According to Victor Milani, ComNet VP of Product Management “Pairing highquality baseband video and Ethernet in one model might seem like a contradiction. Our Design Center started to see the demand for a fiber optic product that could support today’s current needs, but would have the potential to support the transition to Ethernet without a complete infrastructure retrofit. The FVTFVR10D1E does that. It operates as a point–to-point video and data transmission system and an Ethernet media converter.” The major advantage the ComNet FVTFVR10D1E brings is that it future-proofs your project,” continued Milani. “ComNet is staying ahead of the migration toward video over Ethernet. But we’re also aware of the cost pressures many end-users are placing on integrators and dealers,” said Skip Haight, ComNet Vice President of Marketing. “By offering a model
that can accommodate both baseband video and Ethernet, we’re providing a cost-effective solution that gives an unparalleled amount of flexibility and is a tremendous overall cost saver.“ Haight continued. The design and construction methods allow this sign to be offered with the viewable area a true 4, 6, or 8 feet long and in heights of 12” to 24” in one-inch increments to enhance the appearance of the sign. An increasing number of communities across the country plan to add additional signs or are evaluating the introduction of internally illuminated street name signs to meet the new federally mandated visibility standards. Up until the introduction of this sign, however, many communities have been reluctant to install internally illuminated street name signs because of concerns about weight and maintenance. “The design objectives for this next generation sign were driven by this customer input,” states John Steadman, President of Southern Manufacturing. “One of the top objectives was to minimize weight without sacrificing quality while retaining the ease of service features of our other signs. Through the use of advanced optics, the CLEAN PROFILE sign accomplishes this objective with an

extremely uniform light distribution. The CLEAN PROFILE weighs as much as 20 pounds less than our similar sized standard LED signs and 30 pounds less than the comparable edge-lit models currently on the market. This sign provides the safety and visibility inherent in illuminated street name signs while minimizing the bearing load on mast arms or span wire.” The CLEAN PROFILE is available in either single-sided or double-sided models. The design allows a full range of viewable heights to optimize the aesthetics with the viewable area ranging from 12” to 24” on the single faced version and up to 20” on the double faced model. The body is constructed from the same .125” thick 5052 aluminum that is used for traffic enclosures. The standard finish is black powder coating, but other colors are available, including colors that match the most commonly used mast arms. The single-sided sign can be mounted either rigidly to a mast arm or free swinging. The single-sided sign is a mere 3 1/2” thick, and the double-faced edition, with hinged doors on both sides, measures 4 3/4” thick.
The CLEAN PROFILE sign has been extensively tested prior to introduction, including passing a physical 110-mile per hour wind and water test. The LED light strips have been cycle tested to simulate six years, and the Philips Rebel LEDs are rated at 60,000 by Philips at double the amperage of the Southern light engine. Thus, the expected life of the LEDs operating 12 hours per day on average is over 13 years. Should maintenance be required or the street renamed, lens can be changed in-service without any tools, and the internal components can be replaced using only common tools. The sign carries a 6 year warranty. For more information visit: www. southernmfg.com.
