product data sheet NewsEdit XT v5.0 Nonlinear Editor Nonlinear Editing System Grass Valley™ products offer the most comprehensive, multi-format solutions for acquisition, production, storage, and playback—and a strong foundation for centralized, proactive status and activity monitoring. As part of this broad capability, the Grass Valley Digital News Production Solution touches the entire news production process, from field editing on a laptop editor and low-resolution edit decision list (EDL) creation at a journalist’s desktop through a finished news story that is automatically played to air at a user-definable timeframe. A key component of this solution is the NewsEdit™ XT nonlinear editor, the fastest nonlinear system available for editing broadcast news. It is the flagship editor of the NewsEdit family, which includes the NewsEdit SC software-based nonlinear editors and NewsEdit LT laptop-based editors. The NewsEdit XT system is a perfect fit in any newsroom. It uses standard PC technologies and networking technologies for smooth integration. It offers broad format support, including that for DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO, MPEG, and IMX at data rates of up to 50 Mb/s, to fit right into your workflow. And it offers a wide array of options that let you tailor it to the level of production you need. To speed your work, not only does the NewsEdit XT system eliminate pre-digitizing, but its Realtime Edit™ feature lets you see edits as they’re made—so there’s no review necessary. As a result, it is twice as fast as other nonlinear editing systems. Thus the NewsEdit XT system delivers all of the benefits of nonlinear technology, including instant random access, multiple levels of undo, real-time transition effects preview option, and the ability to quickly make new story versions. Editors can also record directly from tape to timeline while performing insert edits, voice-overs, L-shaped cuts, and three-point edits quickly. The NewsEdit XT system also offers a full set of effects options, including a 3D DVE option for producing packages and promos. The NewsEdit XT system speeds high-production value pieces through its support of real-time dissolves, soft-edge wipes, and color borders. It also offers new options for a range of key framable 2D and 3D digital effects—not just replacing an A/B edit bay but adding a full complement of digital effects capabilities. In addition, NewsEdit XT includes a color-correction feature that is especially valuable for hastily shot news footage whose color balance was improperly set. It also offers voice disguise and blur and mosaic effects for use in investigative reports. NewsEdit also provides interpolated slow motion effects with Realtime Preview for ultra smooth slo-motion in sports. key features • Full-featured, highly customizable nonlinear editor for news production • Record from tape to timeline and edit directly to the timeline without pre-digitizing • View edits as they are made with Realtime Edit to eliminate the need to go back and review edits • Seamless NRCS integration with leading systems such as AP/ENPS and iNews and with digital delivery systems such as Pathfire via Profile® interface • Options for 2D and 3D digital effects with luma and chroma key support • Comprehensive transitions including dissolves, pushes, slides and soft-edge wipes • Color correction option for rebalance of improperly shot footage • Proc amp controls support video- and chroma-level adjustments • Adjust audio levels dynamically • MP3, CD, and Wave audio file import/ export capabilities • Three-band audio equalizer and a voice-disguise • Top and tail editing automate multi-track trimming • Format independence—MPEG-2 up to 50 Mb/s, DV25, with optional DV50 and IMX support • Interpolated slo-motion with Realtime Preview for ultra-smooth slo-motion effects • 1394 support for direct camera to disk media import/export • Supports Grass Valley NAS and Open SAN storage systems product data sheet The NewsEdit User Interface Media Bin Used for organizing clips and storyboarding packages. Bins can be viewed in either thumbnail or text mode and clips can be quickly sorted and sifted by name, duration, description, and other familiar database categories. Timeline Allows an editor to view an entire story while editing. The timeline supports one track of video and up to eight tracks of audio. Clips and voice-overs can be recorded directly to the timeline or imported from the media bin. From within the timeline, clips can be trimmed with frame accuracy, split, moved, or reordered. Real-time effects preview, such as audio crossfades, dissolves, and wipes can be added quickly. Video Window Allows viewing of media being recorded or played back. When performing trim edits, two or more video windows in the user interface display the respective in and out points of consecutive clips. Because the NewsEdit XT editor can record and play back simultaneously, it can imitate a record deck’s PB/EE capability of an insert edit. The NewsEdit XT editor is the only nonlinear editing application to retain this familiar convention relied upon by tape editors. For character generation, the NewsEdit XT system supports a Chyron Lyric CG plug-in option that uses pre-formatted templates that can store attributes of particular newscasts or programs. The CG options are integrated with the NewsEdit XT system just like any other tool—the toolbar includes a CG selection and there is a CG key on the keyboard. Selecting the CG feature automatically provides you the tools to open a template, enter text, edit text, and change fonts, colors, borders, and perform other operations. There’s no need to open a new window or search through menus. To speed production workflows further, the NewsEdit XT system is compatible with the Grass Valley Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Grass Valley Open Storage Area Network (SAN). These systems let journalists simultaneously view and edit feeds, and edit the same material in different bays simultaneously—even start work on a sequence in one edit bay and finish it in another. In addition to the NewsEdit XT system, the Grass Valley Digital News Production Solution includes the cost-effective, softwarebased NewsEdit SC editor and, for filed editing applications, the NewsEdit LT laptop editing system; the FeedClip™ interactive feed capture system; NewsBrowse™ Web-based browser/editor; the Grass Valley NAS and Open SAN systems; the Profile XP Media Platform for ingest and playout; the NewsQ™ manual playback system; the NewsQ Pro automated news playback control system; and the Profile Network Archive. The NewsEdit XT system can also access clips from feeds captured by the FeedClip interactive feed capture system, making it easy to combine these materials with field footage. Accelerating the process further is the NewsEdit XT system’s unique Edit to Timeline feature, which makes it the fastest nonlinear news editor for editing field footage. The NewsEdit XT system is also integrated with the Profile XP Media Platform for resilient and automated playback of finished sequences as well as with the NewsQ manual player and the NewsQ Pro automated news playback control system. These digital playback systems eliminate the confusion and errors of tape-based playback. The NewsEdit system can also exchange files with the M-Series iVDR line of intelligent video disc recorders. Stretching newsroom dollars and resources even further, the NewsEdit XT system offers MOS support, enabling you to integrate it with AP ENPS and iNews scripts; and the ability to integrate with a NewsQ Pro system, which can control two Profile XP Media Platform systems or NewsQ systems for simultaneous backup. Thus the NewsEdit XT system can link the entire news production process—from rundown to script to edit to playback. With this level of integration, producers and editors can access assets, view rundowns, read scripts, and edit video all on a single PC, making it easier, faster, and more efficient to bring breaking news to air. Sounds Good The NewsEdit system also supports the Grass Valley M-Series™ iVDR line of intelligent video disc recorders. Greatly enhancing the NewsEdit XT system’s audio capabilities is support for up to four in, eight mixed, and four out audio channels; a two in/two out option is also available. Meeting the Need for Speed and Efficiency In addition, the NewsEdit XT system features audio-input metering and level control for accurate audio editing and playout, audio scrubbing and routing from source to timeline. With the addition of audio EQ, editors can fix audio problems and add audio effects, including three-band, applied on input (destructive), applied on clip (non-destructive). And the system’s drag-and-drop audio feature enables you to quickly and easily move audio clips between tracks. By converging video, text, and effects on a single workstation, the NewsEdit XT system supports the need of news professionals to multitask. Taking efficiency a notch higher, it offers compatibility with low-resolution browsers and editors through OMF EDL file import. As a result, journalists can now browse and assemble a low-resolution version of a story using the NewsBrowse system, for example, and then pass an EDL to the NewsEdit system for high-resolution finish editing. This approach greatly streamlines newsroom workflows: because the NewsBrowse system is a desktop product, it eases viewing-room congestion so journalists can work faster. The NewsEdit XT system also offers an optional external audio mixer with four flying faders that link to the audio timeline for accurate audio mixing. The NewsEdit XT system now supports use of an optional second VGA monitor. In addition, the NewsEdit XT system supports 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios. product data sheet The Digital News Production Solution 10/100Base-T Ethernet Facility LAN FC Switch Offering end-to-end support of DVand MPEG-based news production, this solution is built around the Grass Valley Digital News Production Solution – including the FeedClip interactive feed capture system, NewsEdit nonlinear editing system, NewsQ manual playback system, NewsQ Pro automated news playback system, Profile XP Media Platform, Grass Valley Open SAN system, and Profile Network Archive system.
