News From NAB 2005 !!
From RVR - New MOSFET devices that allow high power in less space. These new devices have undergone testing in the RVR laboratory before being commercially released in exciting new products from RVR. The already-compact 2000 watt FM power amplifiers that we have been offering in two 3 rack unit high chassis, ( 6 rack units total ) now produces well over 2,500 watts with the new devices. Extremely Compact 5 KW FM transmitters A complete 5000 watt FM transmitter in half a rack !. Using 12 rack units of space for the FM power amplifiers, two FM exciters each 2 units high, and a 3 unit high combiner. As well, advanced power supply design provides very high efficiency, and low weight. Power Factor Correction ( PFC ) technology is being introduced into all new RVR equipment designs. Compact 1.4 KW FM Power Amplifiers The same new MOSFET technology has allowed the development of a new 1400 watt amplifier based on the same 3 unit high rack chassis as the present 1000 watt amplifier range. This new extremely compact power amplifier also uses a PFC power supply , and operates on a wide range of mains voltages. RVR High Power FM Transmitters-

Not new at NAB, but released over recent months is the new TX20KWD 20,000 watt FM transmitter in only two rack cabinets. The TX20KWD Hot Plug-in transmitter is available with two exciters and a built-in changeover unit. The power supply system uses two parallel transformer/rectifier units for redundancy, and switch mode power supplies in each RF module. All RF modules are controlled by a network of processors, and a central control unit.

From ABE - Digital Microwave Links ABE continue to develop their range of digital linking equipment, and at NAB they displayed their new 10 Ghz and 14 Ghz digital microwave links. Low power, low cost, frequency agile TV transmitters were on show. These replace the existing TR series of low cost transmitters. This new design uses an L-Band IF to avoid the traditional complications in low cost TV transmitter design. An L-Band QPSK modulator is now available, which avoids the need to separately convert from 70 Mhz to L-Band. Also on show was their TV transmitter that can provide either analog or digital operation at the flick of a switch ! This unit was first announced in our spring 2004 newsletter. This unit is used in Italy to switch from analogue to digital at midnight each night, as part the European introduction to digital technology. At SMPTE 05 , ARFC will have on display ABE MPEG Encoders and Decoders. These demonstration units will be available for sale at reduced cost during the show.
From ALDENA - New Antenna Systems from Aldena now include the model ALP1104712, a VHF Band III log periodic antenna, with 10 dB of gain. This antenna can be used over the entire 175 to 230 Mhz frequency range and has a maximum input power rating of 3 KW. This antenna can be used as a single antenna, or as part of an antenna array. For FM broadcasting, Aldena offer the model ALP0802712, an FM band log periodic antenna, with 7.5 dB of gain and 5000 watts maximum input power over the entire FM band. This has recently been accompanied by the new model ALP0502710 FM band log periodic antenna, with 5.5 dB of gain and 1000 watts maximum power rating over the entire FM band. For UHF television applications, Aldena now offer a new panel antenna with vertical polarisation. The model ATU0807421V has 10.8 dB of gain and is rated at 1500 watts maximum input power over the frequency range 470 to 860 Mhz. Like the Aldena horizontally polarised panel antenna, model ATU0807420, this unit is DC grounded to afford some protection against the effects of lightning strikes - Not all panel antenna designs offer this protection.
