The NewStep actuator and controller has been designed for remote adjustment of sensitive, hard-to-reach optical mounts which can be influenced by the compressive and torsional forces imposed by traditional manual adjustment micrometers. Typical applications include optimizing the alignment of a laser cavity, zeroing in on coherence lengths or just adjusting the pointing of a beam over a long distance. Applications can also be automated using LabView or other software by sending basic commands to NewStep controller through the integrated RS485 port. NewStep actuators feature reliable open-loop stepper motors which provides 12 mm travel, sub-micron minimum incremental motion and can be used for loads up to 18 N. To protect equipment damage from over-travel, NewStep actuators include a fixed, integrated minimum travel optical limit switch and a controller programmable soft limit for maximum travel. Additionally, the NewStep actuator also features a non-rotating tip that prevents wear and avoids periodic motion variations which may occur in other rotating tipped actuator products. The actuator incorporates a novel spring mechanism that virtually eliminates backlash which is critical in applications such as optimization of beam alignment or optical scanning. The NewStep actuator's compact design (only 60 mm long x 30 mm diameter) and standard interface is designed to be compatible with many Newport mounts and manual stages. The handheld NSC100 provides convenient single knob control and features 64x microstepping ratio for ultra-smooth, high resolution positioning. The spring loaded, rotary knob on the front of the controller controls the velocity of the actuator. Rotate the knob in one direction and the actuator extends. Rotate the knob in the other direction and the actuators retracts. The farther the knob is rotated, the faster the actuator moves. This is accomplished by integrating an opti- M O T I O N C O N T R O L cal encoder into the knob rather than a velocity based potentiometer. The optical encoder provides increased accuracy and reliability over potentiometer based designs. The spring loaded knob always returns to its zero point when it is released thus stopping actuator motion. The NSC100 has also a serial RS485 communication link that allows computer control of up 256 units in parallel. The NSC100 RS485 interface can be accessed by using the RS485 to RS232 converter NSC-CB-485-232 that plugs directly to the PC's RS232 port. For computer control operation the manual knob on the NSC100 can be disabled. A three color LED on the NSC100 indicates the different operation modes. NSC-JB The controller comes with LabView VI's and Windows based software that supports configurations and enables convenient remote computer control.
