In the previous issues of NIVELCO Magazine there is an overview about the history of our company and its products. (You can download our previous issues at our homepage at “NIVELCO Magazine” on the left side). In 2012 we participated in several major events. We started the anniversary year at MagyarRegula exhibition in Hungary in March and continued at HannoverMesse in Germany in April. We held the closing ceremony in October at a gala evening in the Museum of Fine Arts Budapest. Nearly 400 of our domestic and international partners visited the ceremony. The evening’s star hostess Krisztina Bombera together with Tamás Szőllős President recalled the past 30 years inviting on stage the directors of our two eldest partners, Tibor Kovács from Slovak MICROWELL and Dave Jennings from New-Zealand INTECH Instruments. Mr. Szőllős happily called up the beginnings of the Company and answered for a question that he hopes for more and more positive changes in NIVELCO’s future. Gyöngyi Dani multiple Paralympic silver medallist fencer and ski racer – who is a member of the Hungarian Paralympic Team supported primary by NIVELCO – also got on stage in the evening and told us about her preparation for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. On the occasion of the 30-year anniversary our Austrian distributor Harald Göth surprised us with a Sacher cake shaping our new PiloTREK non-contact radar created by a Viennese pastry chef. 4 NIVELCO’s 30-year anniversary The evening’s guest star was the world-wide famous FoolMoon acappella vocalband whose concert was a great success. Each guest took home one of the band’s CD which was produced especially for this occasion with NIVELCO’s support. The short video of the gala evening is available on our new YouTube channel. Accompanying the 30-year anniversary celebration NIVELCO organized an international Sales Meeting for our highlighted distributors and subsidiary companies in Hotel Visegrád, the beautiful conference location next to the picturesque Danube Bend. Through the three-day conference our partners have reported about their significant projects and were listening to lectures about PiloTREK microwave radar level transmitter. We expect the forthcoming years to be prosperous and successful! Péter Szőllős Vice President NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 5 NIVELCO SE ski racers at the highest level in any ski resort! Our small team closed the previous year as their most successful season In her age group the ten year old Noa Szőllős stood on the podium in every race she have participated! Besides winning 3 Hungarian championship titles this year she has also won the Murau province cup series and what we are the most proud of is that she has successfully defended her Champion of Styria title! In summary, Noa collected about 20 cups in this season and not only keep up with her brothers but they have been overcome by Noa’s achievement! In September Benjamin Szőllős began his studies in Waidhofen TZW, the oldest ski school in Austria. This is a special school where studying, training and ski racing are equally important “courses”. In addition to the daily school attendance they have also multiple trainings a day. Benjamin is the first Hungarian ski racer who was able to get in to this prestigious school which has trained several champions over the years. We are confident that next year they can enhance the name of NIVELCO SE together with Barnabás! The only sixteen year old competitor of NIVELCO SE, Benjamin represented Hungary as the youngest member among the world's best alpine skiers at the Austrian Schladming World Championship in February, 2013. At the first world championship in his life in giant slalom qualifications he reached the admirable 44th place among the 132 competitors! This achievement meant a 76th place in the overall competition among the world elite competitors! He couldn’t enter in his favourite event slalom, as the next big challenge the 11th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF 2013) was waiting for him. Among the nearly 100 competitors Benjamin ranked at place 25th in slalom! The fourteen year old Barnabás Szőllős finishes the Murau sport school this year where the most important thing was skiing for four years besides studying. In the season he also stood many times on the podium and as a member of the Hungarian national team he did very well on international races! The biggest challenge of the year is whether he passes the entrance examination at Waidhofen Ski School! 6 NIVELCO SE ski racers at the highest level in any ski resort! EYOWF is a significant youth sport event of the continent’s U-18 (under 18-year) competitors which was held this year in Brasov, Romania with the participation of 45 countries. In giant slalom Benjamin ranked 48th but two days after that with race number 70 he managed to climb up in his favourite racing discipline to the remarkable 25th place! We just got the news after deadline: Barnabás got accepted to Waidhofen Ski School too! Among the enthusiastic fans there were the members of NIVELCO Tehnica Masurarii office so we could celebrate together the NIVELCO SE racer! The competitors spend the summer also with active recreation; all three of them are members of the FACE TEAM junior team where they learn acrobatic basketball from the world famous adult team! In the past two years we have been playing it with great success in exhibitions, meetings and trainings. We went to numerous locations and were shooting in almost every industrial fields. From the content of the new NIVELCO Movie: Faucet factory: Our devices do the hot alloy temperaturecontrol for faucet moulding in extremely harsh conditions. Ice cream factory: Hungary’s largest ice cream factory is also using NIVELCO instruments for controlling the temperature of the pasteurizing tanks, switching and measuring the level of the milk and other raw material tanks. In 2012 on the occasion of our 30-year anniversary we decided to renew our film. Once again we hit the road and visited our key partners where our staff has recorded several hours of video. This way our film has broadened with new application solutions. 8 NIVELCO Movie 2012 Poultry feed plant: There are many level switches and level transmitters in the plant such as NIVOROTA rotary paddle level switch for hopper monitoring of the fodder grinder machines and limit level switching of interstitial storage tanks. During the projections we have seen that there is a need for additional information. Therefore we created multilingual subtitles for the film in which the spectators can learn more about our company and application examples has detailed descriptions. With this innovation our audience can get a more intense experience and more information! The film is available on our homepage at the usual place at the bottom of the left menu bar. Following the new trends NIVELCO launched its very own YouTube channel where various versions of our film are available along with our events’ video highlights and presentations of devices debuting in the near future. Please visit our YouTube channel and subscribe to our updates at www.youtube.com/nivelco. We hope that you will like the new NIVELCO Movie just like the older one! Grain mill: Our NIVOCAP capacitive level transmitters are measuring the state of the grinder’s throat level in very dusty environment. Rainwater pumping station: In many premises of Budapest Sewage Works our NIVOPRESS N borehole hydrostatic level transmitters are very popular and they monitor the water level of the rainwater pumps. Balázs Csibráki Marketing Engineer NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 9 2013 – the year of production development I built my professional career step by step like Michael J. Fox in “The Secret of My Success”. I started my career at the military division of Orion RTV Enterprise then that I worked for Egis Pharmaceuticals and SIEMENS AG (in Bicske, 1996) which was a historic choice of my life. I owe my former colleagues a lot who have taught and supported me or caused problems I had to solve and gained experiences and routine while doing so. I left in 2008 as a production leader controlling the work of 40 people. In 2008 I accepted the production manager position offered by SEMILAB Semiconductor Physics Laboratory Co. Ltd. on one hand because of the Budapest location and on the other hand I had the chance to build up what I have studied so far. The company’s profile is instrument production for the international – mostly Chinese – market of solar cell. Under my management SEMILAB’s production has been tripled. In 2010 at Deloitte „Fast 50” competition in “The 50 fastest growing technological companies in Central Europe, BIG 5” category we reached the 4th place. For this success it was necessary to increase the production continuously, to expand and construct a well-organized team work. New production manager at NIVELCO My name is Tibor Sári, I am married, I have a collegeaged son and a high school-aged daughter. I have two professions; I graduated at Kandó Kálmán Faculty of Electrical Engineering as a telecommunication engineer at digital technology transfer module. During my career I took several professional courses and vocational trainings such as: KAIZEN, 3i, FMEA, 8D, LEAN pillars, ISO 9001, TS 16949, ISO 1400. On executive coaching trainings I have studied communication skills, “nonviolent” (nowadays rather called) collaborative communication and interpretation of labour law. At Budapest University of Technology and Economics I learned about technology of electronic products. These studies were embedded to the thirteen years managerial work I have done at multinational and domestic corporations. I believe I have to support my subordinates and colleagues in pushing their boundaries, being creative and discover their own qualities. Everyone has the ability to perform the maximum. 10 2013 – the year of production development We reached a limit and it wasn’t the number of orders but the number of orders we can accomplish (without loss of quality). This disagreement led to a “divorce”. A door closed but another one opened: I knocked on NIVELCO’s door and they let me in. From April 2, 2012 I started getting to know NIVELCO’s history, present, products, employees the Production management system. Production is the largest department at the company it includes purchasing, material management, machining, mechanical assembly, electrical calibration, and a management team controlling each section. This nearly 80 people manufacture all the orders coming from all over the world, about 35 000 products a year, support the developers in prototyping, and handle the devices coming for repairing. I started with a status survey looking for the possible problems and then their solutions. I took over the production related activities from my predecessor, the recently retired János Kirády, and continue his work as a production manager building in my characteristics and ideas. I have aimed the acceptance and launch of the solutions and in the end the control and improvement where possible which is a PDCA spiral, so-called a Deming cycle. At a well-organized company like NIVELCO, which is celebrating its 30-year anniversary it is really hard to find any big problems, so it is still a huge challenge operating the already formed system. 11 2013 – the year of production development Among the 2013 goals: The modernization, expansion and resource optimization of the warehouse is continuing. The production efficiency is 72 % at the moment which we would like to increase up to 80 %. In this achievement I’m counting on our professional technologists – accelerating, improving, simplifying labour process – and my colleagues’ innovative ideas. Fluctuation has been 0% or slightly more for years now on, this means that our employees if they leave they retire. I’d like to keep this tendency in this “level”. We are trying to get ready for meeting the needs of growing demand of the new PiloTREK non-contact microwave level transmitter. Another of our goal is serving rapidly the development in new product prototyping and supporting better the engineering colleagues in solving customer problems. The building expansion in 2013 – presented by Péter Szőllős Vice President – is a great challenge for the production management. During the construction the manufacturing has to be uninterrupted and our customers should not feel anything from it. Making this happen it is necessary to synchronize the work of the each production section. Finally I’d like to continue my job as Production Manager referring to principles of Tamás Szőllős CEO of NIVELCO: Respect for the Knowledge and Experience of the Founders Professional Pride in our Products Responsibility for our Colleagues and Customers Ensuring our Products and Services provide Value and keeping my motto in mind: “The secret of joy in work is contained in one word excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.” (Pearl Buck) Instead of big improvements we could talk only about refinements which we managed to increase the transparency of the warehouse with the followings: introduction of transparent boxes in storage wrapping the painted housings and covers to avoid scratches Using Visual management solutions we managed to make the manufacturing departments more attractive for our guests and visitors: the machining, mechanical construction, electronics and production preparation all got work shirts with different colours. Over the work places there are product images hanging on the wall showing pictures of the specific product type assembled there. At the electronic section it is possible to increase the capacity of the pick and place machine using component holders (fider) which resulted reducing changeover time. We managed to solve the daily receipt of products coming for service instead of weekly takeover reducing the examination and transit time. This means faster communication towards the sales representatives. At the purchasing section from December 2012 we archive our outgoing orders electronically and managed to make more supplier partners to take over the shipping costs, update the framework agreements and the delivery contracts with favourable conditions. I hope the management made the right decision when they chose me! Tibor Sári Head of Production NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 12 Photo exhibition in NIVELCO Trade Center See the world a little differently through Flóra’s eyes! NIVELCO, the committed supporter of all kinds of arts is pleased to assist the new emerging Generation Y talents in accomplish new goals. Now Flóra Borsi hobby photographer had an opportunity to publish her pictures. Flóra exhibited her photo series in the lobby of our office building. The young talent has been inspired by our new product the PiloTREK non-contact microwave level transmitter and visualised it from a new and different viewpoint. Come and visit our home office, NIVELCO Trade Center and look up the pictures! Balázs Csibráki Marketing Engineer NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 13 Market-building, a new challenge for NIVELCO group Sales meeting training of NIVELCO USA’s reps in Chicago The management of NIVELCO Process Control Co. made a recent strategic decision in the beginning of 2012. Based on the success stories of the export sales especially in the European, Asian and South-American markets NIVELCO decided to start an intensive marketbuilding activity in the United States. However NIVELCO USA LCC has been participating in the American level instrumentation market since 2008, but this presence was realized mainly by our private labeling partners in the past. To be aware with the economic potential and the excellent quality of NIVELCO products we have to search new challenges with one of the widest portfolios of the process instrumentation industry and offering at the same time the best price/value ratio. I have joined to NIVELCO group in the beginning of the last year to serve this market-building activity and make benefit from my decades of experience in the field of process automation. Based on my market knowledge and relationship network a viable representative channel has been built throughout North-America. Thanks to Paul Dennis – who has been managing the US subsidiary company since its establishment – a well-developed logistics and financial system was at our disposal for the further increasing. The previous year was spent with hardworking days and its result was 23 new distributor contracts. With this step our primary goal has been achieved, NIVELCO’s coverage is practically 100% on the American market at the moment. As a summit of all efforts over the previous year we held a two-day national sales meeting training in Chicago between on the 12th and 13th of March 2013. The event provided personal impressions for our partners about the NIVELCO group and its products. The meeting was prepared very thoroughly in the host selection and also in the design of a special training structure. The mother company was represented by Mr. Tibor Winkler, Board member, and Peter Domonics export sales engineer. Visiting our new and already existing labelling partners took another two days in order to deepen our cooperation, discuss the opportunities of the future and receive useful feedbacks from our products and the market reactions. The impressive Hotel Marriott was an ideal host place for the event held for the new members of our rep network. All of our guests were very satisfied with the quality services. The presentations provided detailed picture about not only the past and present of NIVELCO, but future plans and long-term intensions were also discussed. The first day presentations covered the complete level instrumentation portfolio with special focus on the products having great interest by the American market such as PiloTREK, MicroTREK, EchoTREK, EasyTREK and many other transmitters. The next day was continued with further product presentations then in the second half of the day was devoted for Q&A section, sharing suggestions and new ideas followed by a constructional brainstorming session. At the end of the event our guests evaluated very positively the two-day sales training meeting. As they honored us with their presence, our reps provided evidence about their devotion and willingness for the future cooperation. Seeing the continuous interest and motivation during the whole meeting was a real pleasure. We believe that the positive attitude of our representatives experienced at the meeting is based on mutual interest and partnership, and we can expect a lot of common success this year by working hard for each other's interests. We would like to express gratitude for all visiting partners. Also thanks for all colleagues participating in the preparation and organization of the event and the devoted and conscientious assistance. It was again a great team success we could celebrate at NIVELCO. David J. Miller Managing Director NIVELCO USA LLC. [email protected] The very long and exhausting training day was ended with an enjoyable and memorable evening in the charming Weber Grill Restaurant. 15 NIVISION – NIVELCO’s Process Visualization Software The instruments can either be intelligent transmitters with analogue output or digital (HART, ModBus, ModBus TCP) communication (measuring any type of physical parameters such as level, temperature, pressure, pH, ORP, DO, etc.), or different switches based on different measuring principles. The tank farm layout with tanks, instrumentation and other process devices can easily be visualized. Measurement data-acquisition at the highest level On the columns of the previous NIVELCO Magazine issues our readers could find many application case studies, where the NIVISION visualization software was demonstrated under operation at many of our partners, but without any detailed description. The HART communication capable NIVELCO manufactured instruments can be connected to PC with MultiCONT multichannel process controller unit, or like any all other manufacturers’ instruments with standard digital HART output can be with UNICOMM universal HART-USB communication interface modules. With the help of special interface (e.g. relay, RS485) modules (which can be organized in chain) it is possible to integrate analogue 4-20 mA current, 0-10 V voltage signals, contact or valve state signals into the process visualization system. The wiring and investment costs can be dramatically reduced by using free frequency radio or industrial WiFi data transmission. The Demo Version of NIVISION is now available to download from our website and most functions such as display options and configuration possibilities of the software can be tried on a visualized example process. This visualization software which is well accepted in all around the world can be also tested in our well-know “Level on the Road” exhibition vehicle. The NIVISION is a VISION X9 based process visualization software which uses the XSDL (Extensible Structure Declaration Language) programming and configuring language. NIVISION can visualize a process control system on a PC built with NIVISION instruments, or any existing instrumentation system including measuring-, switching-, or even actuator (such as pumps, valves) equipment. The steps of customizing NIVISION to a specific application: 16 NIVISION – NIVELCO’s Process Visualization Software The end-user draws the technological, operational and functional requirements of the application. Based on the customer's requirements NIVELCO offers a complete solution including level measurement equipments, auxiliary devices and a system plan meeting the requirements of the application. The developer configures the visualization project in the NIVISION developer system graphically and makes the required programming. The finalized project is commissioned (hardware and software) at the user’s site and the end-user can start using the NIVISION runtime system. Exporting and importing different database types is also a basic feature of the software. A clear and transparent overview of all processes involved in an application makes stock and material management a simple task with a well constructed NIVISION project. Another great feature of the software is that a NIVISION project can be visualized on a remote computer (with no NIVISION installed) through a local area network (LAN) or the Internet using an ordinary internet browser or even by a Smartphone. NIVISION is a perfect solution for small and medium sized process control systems where setting up a SCADA system is too expensive. The basic element of the software is the so called "UNIT" which contains the applied instrument (with graphical representation), the instrument's variables, event handling, communication and data display. With the help of these units a complete process instrumentation system can be set up for visualization. NIVISION offers a wide range of visualization elements of the measured and limit values, time based trends, databases and logs. Ferenc Dékány Sales Engineer NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 17 PiloTREK W-100 level transmitter family The PiloTREK W-100 transmitter family has wide process connection selection lining up BSP and NPT threaded connec-tions, from DN80 to DN150 flanges as per DIN, ANSI and JIS standard made from 1.4571 (316 Ti) stainless steel or Polypropylene. The sanitary types which meet high hygienic requirements have PTFE plastic antenna enclosure with 2” Tri-Clamp or DN50 DIN 11851 standard pipe coupling (socalled MILCH) process connection. The operation of the non-contact microwave level transmitters is based on the measurement of the time of flight of the microwave burst. The propagation speed of microwave impulses is practically the same in air, gases and in vacuum, independently from the process temperature and pressure, so the measured distance is not affected by the physical parameters of medium to be measured. The level transmitter induces microwave impulses a few nanosecond long in the antenna and a part of the energy of the emitted signals is bounced (reflected) back from the measurement surface depending on the measured media. The time of flight of the reflected signal is measured and processed by the electronics, and then this is converted to distance, level or volume proportional data. The measurability of the level of a specific medium is depending on the signal strength of the reflected microwave impulses. The signal strength of the reflected impulses is considerably depending on the distance to be measured, the relative dielectric constant of the measured medium and the turbulence of the surface. In case of the PiloTREK transmitters the relative dielectric constant (εr) of the medium should be more than 1.9. The new Flagship instrument from NIVELCO Thanks to our esteemed partners the first 100 units of the new generation PiloTREK W-100 level transmitters have been commissioned since November 2012. We are proud that on the first challenge, our PiloTREK noncontact microwave level transmitter won the Product Award of the MagyarRegula 2012 exhibition, as an innovative Hungarian development. The 25 GHz (K-band) PiloTREK Pulse Radars are regarded the most progressive non-contact level transmitters of the industrial process automation field. Their accuracies are excellent and their short and narrow antennas make their installation simple and low cost. PiloTREK is an ideal solution of high precision level transmitting of liquids, slurries, dollops, emulsions and other chemicals in a wide range of application area, such as water / wastewater, food industry, energy industry, pharmaceutical industry, chemical industry, and even in naval applications. Its antenna range incorporates stainless steel horn with three different diameters and enclosed PP or PTFE plastic tube varieties. The maximal measurement rage for the DN40 horn antenna is 18 metre (59 feet), the DN50 and DN80 antennas are up to 23 metre (75 feet). The enclosed antenna versions can be replaced without removing the antenna enclosure from the process. NIVELCO’s new K-band radar featuring ±3 mm accuracy and short dead band excels with its versatile housing concept lining up plastic and aluminium versions. Standard and high temperature types are also available; the maximal medium temperature can be up to 180 °C (356 °F) in case of the high temperature type. 18 PiloTREK W-100 level transmitter family The PiloTREK non-contact level transmitters emit linearly polarized microwave impulses. The polarization plane of the emitted impulses can be rotated arbitrary in case of the horn antenna versions. The rotation of the polarization plane can minimize unwanted false reflections from disturbing objects or from the tank wall. The orientation of the polarization plane coincides with the line drawn between the cable glands. Furthermore the instrument provides additional false reflection filtering from its software. The background mapping feature offers excellent solution to ignore unwanted false reflections coming from (not-moving) disturbing objects. For this purpose the instrument needs to map the totally empty tank to create a ”background image”. Then the measurement evaluation software of PiloTREK will automatically recognise and ignore the false reflections coming from the disturbing objects inside the tank. The narrow beam cone and consequently the well focused microwave measurement signals facilitate that the measurement of those substances – which tend to foam, or for liquids with a gas layer – which are challenging applications for ultrasonic systems they are not impossible tasks for K-band radars. Since there is no need for a defined propagation medium in the case of microwaves, the PiloTREK is applicable under a vacuum, so these special applications can be also covered reliably with NIVELCO instruments. PiloTREK has received the required R&TTE and FCC communication compliance certifications and the Ex ia intrinsically safe ATEX (for Europe), IEC Ex (International) and FM (for United States) certifications are under approval. The 2-wire level trans-mitters has 4-20 mA analogue and digital HART communication output so they can be easily integrated to process control system with the help of a MultiCONT multichannel process controller or with a UNICOMM HART-USB communication interface module. Local programming of the PiloTREK is aided by a plug-in display module. With the help of the SAP-300 plug-in display a simplified full-parameter programming can be accomplished, the parameters of measurement and output can be set using the text-based menu system. The large LCD dot-matrix display displays the measured values in numerical and bar graph form. Furthermore the SAP-300 display allows monitoring the Echo Map; this feature helps to detect false reflections and aids the optimization of the measurement configuration. If on-site reading is not desired this module may not be required thus reducing cost of ownership. The signal processing algorithm of the new PiloTREK is based on NIVELCO’s 30 years of experience with noncontact level measurement making it an excellent choice for applications simple and challenging alike. Csaba Nádasdi Marketing Engineer NIVELCO Co. [email protected] 19 NIVOSWITCH vibrating forks for pharmaceutical applications These industries have high hygienic requirements and specify that all devices used in any process step should be suitable for bacteria-free cleaning procedures. In order to these meet these hygienic requirements NIVELCO offers high quality fine polishing probe versions where the average surface roughness is always less than Ra=0.4 μm. Fine polished vibrating fork level switches NIVELCO’s level switch selection offers vibrating forks for a long time. These popular units cover very wide application range and they are simple, reliable and easy to use devices. In the NIVOSWITCH family there are numberless variations: compact, mini compact types, for liquid or solid applications, with many types of electrical connection and process connection. Thanks to the applied surface treatment process the probes can be completely cleaned from medium deposits which might be a good substance for bacterial cultures. This is a really important aspect for the food & beverage and the pharmaceutical applications because most of the used processes are batch characterised so only one tank can be used for production according to multiple recipes. As the processes follows each other the used equipments (tanks, pipelines, pumps, etc..) are cleaned from the contaminations remained in the process system. The main steps of the cleaning: washing with cold water, washing with hot 82 °C (180 °F) water, washing with slightly acidic (approximately 2-5 %) washing liquid, and finally disinfection with 130 °C (266 °F) steam. The cleaning process may be repeated if the local regulations needed. The NIVOSWITCH vibrating forks with fine polished probe get completely cleaned after these kinds of cleaning processes. The process connections recommended for high hygienic applications are also available for the NIVOSWITCH vibrating forks. The Tri-Clamp and the DIN 11851 pipe-coupling (socalled MILCH) process connections meets all requirements of the food & beverage and the pharmaceutical industries. The compact aluminium housing type has a rugged construction; it is rather recommended for application areas where more physical impacts can affect the devices. Due to its small size the mini compact designs with stainless steel tube body are applicable in pipelines and where there is not enough space for robust devices. Another big advantage that the mini compact types are available in integrated cable version which has IP68 ingress protection. The vibration forks for liquid level measurements use piezoelectric crystal which induce vibration in the fork shaped end of the probe. When the fork is immersed by the medium the vibration gets attenuated therefore the medium changes the frequency of the vibration. This frequency change is sensed by the electronics and the output changes its state. This measurement principle is suitable for liquid level detection. NIVELCO is continuously striving to meet the special demands from more and more industrial fields. A fine polished probe version is available in the RG-300 mini compact and the RJ-400/500 aluminium / plastic housing compact series especially for the needs of the food & beverage and the pharmaceutical industries. 20 NIVOSWITCH vibrating forks for pharmaceutical applications These sanitary connections provide fast mounting along with easy cleanability and excellent sealing. The other significant advantage of the TriClamp compared to the standard threaded connections is that the Tri-Clamp has no cracks and crevices where any material deposits can remain. This feature is really important in the aspect of the regular cleaning described in above. This 4-pole connector provides faster wiring and it is smaller than our traditional one. This new output connection type is available for 2-wire DC, 2-wire DC Ex approved, and 3-wire PNP-NPN versions. Besides this new connector the well-known Hirschmann DIN 43650 standard connectors are still available as standard choice. The first units in the product selection of NIVELCO are the mini compact NIVOSWITCH vibrating forks which are available with Hirschmann M12 PG7 connector. [email protected] 21 NIVOCAP capacitance level switch and transmitter family This feature is important in case of hazardous environments since in Dust-Ex areas the housing cover is not allowed to remove when the unit is energized, but the unit needs to be energized for performing the calibration. An insulated section of the probe called the guard-ring takes care of eliminating the build-up usually developing in the top section of the probe below the process connection. The sensitivity of the units can be selected by a push button from 4 ranges and further adjustment can be fine tuned with a potentiometer within the selected range. Switching delay and high or low failsafe are also programmable; the output is SPDT relay or SPST electronic switch. New level switch in the portfolio of NIVELCO The NIVOCAP CK-100 series RF-capacitance level switches are brand new developments from NIVELCO and they are available to order since March 2013. The NIVOCAP CK new generation capacitive level switches unlike the traditional capacitive principle they operate as capacitance meters in the RF (radio-frequency) range. The most advantageous feature of this technique is that the instrument is less sensitive to build-up, therefore the NIVOCAP CK-100 is an excellent choice for those adhering, sticky substances where the vibrating or the other contacting level switches are not applicable. The maximal probe length of the NIVOCAP CK series is 3 metre (10 feet) in case of the rod extended types and the cable extended versions can be ordered up to 10 metre (33 feet) probe length. The high temperature and Dust-Ex approved models are suitable for using in harsh environments up to 220 °C (428 °F) so they can be ideal choice for power generation applications. The mechanical construction consists of a stainless steel probe and a reference probe between two insulations and the electronics always measure the voltage level proportional to the capacitance difference between the two probes and the housing. This way it provides more stabile measurement compared to the analogue capacitance switches. The units are available only with paint coated aluminium housing, because one reference point of the measurement is the housing itself. The intelligent electronics of the CK series evaluates continuously the capacitance of the probe both in its material-free and in its material covered state and calculates the difference between the two capacitance values. As the capacitance difference reaches the value set by the user for the given application, the microcontroller will deliver a command for a switching relay to change its state. When the probe and its close surrounding are free in the air, so the medium to be measured don’t reach the probe, the capacitance difference is constant. When the medium reaches the probe the basic capacitance will increase and the intelligent electronic measures this capacitance change compared to a reference value recorded by the calibration procedure. For this reason after installing the instrument an empty tank calibration should be performed in which the unit “learns” the basic capacitance of its environment and then this value will be considered as the initial reference capacitance value. The calibration can be done even without removing the housing cover by a magnet. 22 NIVOCAP capacitance level switch and transmitter family The other member of the NIVOCAP product family is the CT-200/300 series level transmitters. Those who have already read carefully the two-part article (in our 2012 spring and autumn issue of the NIVELCO Magazine) about the previous 30-year history of NIVELCO, they are surely remember that the level measuring instruments using the capacitance principle have quite as long history in NIVELCO’s product selection as the magnetic float operated or the ultrasonic units. The NIVOCAP 2-wire capacitive level transmitters provide an ideal solution for level measurement of conductive or non-conductive liquids. The probe of the instrument and the reference probe (which can be either the metal wall of the tank or installed separately) operate as opposing plates of a capacitor. Between the plates of this capacitor the air is replaced by a medium with greater dielectric constant than the air during filling the tank, therefore the capacitance is changing directly proportional to the level. The incorporated electronic circuitry measures the capacitance difference and converts it to an output signal proportional to level. Consequently to the capacitive operation principle the relative dielectric constant of the medium should be taken into serious consideration. The measurement will be accurate only in case of suitable probe and reference probe selection. The measurement probe can be partially or fully PFA plastic coated and the reference probe can be coaxial tube or single rod type. The maximal insertion length of the rod probes is 3 metre (10 feet), and the cable extended probe versions are available to order up to 20 metre (65 feet). Besides the standard types, the NIVOCAP family offers high temperature type with heat sink and the maximal medium temperature for these units are 200 °C (392 °F). The plates of the capacitor are the probe and the reference probe (wall of the tank). The dielectric constant of the air is εr =1. The basic capacity of the probe mounted in empty tank is C0, which depends on the relative dielectric constant of the air and the mounting position. During filling the capacitance between probe and reference will increase proportionally with the level and the εr relative dielectric constant of the medium. The condition of an accurate level metering is that the change of capacity has to be proportional to the change in level. To comply with the above the probe and the referential probe have to be parallel, because capacity depends on the distance between the two plates. Best suited for the most accurate level measurement is the so called coaxial arrangement. Setting up the NIVOCAP is easy. Using a simple technique the unit is to be “taught” the minimum (close to minimal) and maximum (close to maximal) levels. If fully filling and draining is inconvenient or not feasible, the teaching is possible at any odd levels with the help of indirect assignment feature. In summary the NIVOCAP product family has been expanded with a new member this year, so it includes not only 2-wire capacitance level transmitters, but also compact RF-capacitance level switches suitable for wide application range. Until now, it was not feasible to measure the coating thickness inside the hollow parts without destroying the entire car body. Common practice has been to dismantle random car bodies for spot-checking of these hidden areas. This approach carries a very high cost and makes systematic, real-time quality control more or less impossible. Non-destructive measurement of CDP coatings inside hollow car body parts Helmut Fischer GmbH - the specialist of innovative measurement technologies for coating thickness measurement, material analysis, micro-hardness measurement and material testing - and the long-term successful cooperation with NIVELCO were introduced in the 2011/1 issue of our Magazine. NIVELCO Process Control Co. as the exclusive Hungarian distributor of FISCHER GmbH would like to invite our readers for short review about coating thickness measuring instruments in the automotive industry. In the following article you can read about the V3FGA06H “cavity probe” which is an ideal solution for coating thickness measurement in cavity parts of different car body components. In the automotive industry, the anti-rust warranty has become an important hallmark of car quality. Particularly in hard-to-reach areas such as the cross beams and pillars of the steel car body, specified tolerances for CDP coating thicknesses must be ensured, because in these areas, corrosion can proceed long undetected. For exactly this purpose, FISCHER has developed the V3FGA06H „cavity probe” which, due to its design, can be inserted into almost any opening in cross beams or pillars for accurate and non-destructive measurement of the CDP coating thickness – on the inside Figure 1: DUALSCOPE® FMP100 and cavity probe V3FGA06H for measurement of CDP coatings on car bodies 24 FISCHER coating thickness measuring instruments Figure 2: Insertion of the V3FGA06H probe into a hollow car body part to measure the CDP coating on the inside The magnetic inductive probe with its wear resistant tip has been optimised for all typical CDP coatings thinner than 25 μm (including Zn). A combination of the DUALSCOPE® FMP100 gauge and FISCHER DataCenter IP (Inspection Plan) allows the user to create inspection plans on a PC and transfer them back to the instrument, providing visually aided guidance though a defined measurement task. It has a specially curved, slim shape and fits through small openings in the car body to measure the thickness of lacquer coatings in heretofore inaccessible areas. Its small, flexible, attached head with three-point support guarantees precise positioning and repeatable measurements even inside the cross beams and on curved surfaces. The V3FGA06H probe works with FISCHER’s FMP series instruments, which are equipped with a USB port that makes it convenient to transfer measurement results to a computer for evaluation, recording and storage using FISCHER DataCenter software. 25 FISCHER coating thickness measuring instruments A combination of the DUALSCOPE® FMP100 gauge and FISCHER DataCenter IP (Inspection Plan) allows the user to create inspection plans on a PC and transfer them back to the instrument, providing visually aided guidance though a defined measurement task. Now thanks to their professional cooperation we can share a new success story, an interesting application case study starring NIVELCO’s EasyTREK integrated ultrasonic level transmitters. The European Union regulations impose the users to measure the volume of wastewater crossed in natural area. This has high importance in case of a heavy thunderstorm when the water level in the drainage channels increase significantly and there is a risk of overflow. Most of the time, the less expansive possibility is to measure the overflow with an open channel flow metering system including an ultrasonic transmitter. Veolia Eau – who provides delegated management of water and wastewater services for municipal and industrial clients – applied an EasyTREK ultrasonic level transmitter together with a MultiCONT controller in the water monitoring system. The EasyTREK SPA-380-4 integrated ultrasonic level transmitter measures the level in the drainage channel and transmits the measurement data to the MultiCONT PEW-216-2 process controller. A linearization table with 20 points is programmed in the MultiCONT to convert level value to flow with the help of Manning Strickler Formula (relation between level and flow in a circular pipe). The 4-20 mA output and pulse relay are wired to a small GSM transmitter (RTU – Remote Terminal Unit) which sends the measured flow data to the central computer system. The most interesting part of this smart measurement system is not only the wireless data transmission, but the powering. The DC powered MultiCONT process controller and the connected GSM transmitter unit are powered by battery reloaded by a solar panel. The solar panel continuously charges the battery pack and it provides 12 V DC power supply for all the devices placed in the instrument rack. The commissioned measurement system resulted remarkable energy and cost savings compared to the standard 230 V network operated systems. During the 10-month test operation there was not raised a single objection to the reliability of the measurement system. This successful project is again a very good example showing that the expertise of C2Plus and the excellent instruments of NIVELCO complementing each other and creating efficient instrumentation solutions. Thanks to NIVELCO Bohemia, our Czech subsidiary company we can present a case study of a power industry application where the high-reliability NIVOMAG level switches are responsible for level monitoring of cooling liquid of turbo generators. The operation specifications such as the up to 250 °C temperature and pressure up to 25 bar, the SIL1 (Safety Integrity Level) approval and Ex atmosphere versions makes this unit required e.g. for energy industry. Mounting of NIVOMAG is available either from side or top of the tank. Also wide variety of process connections is offered including thread, square flange or DIN flanges made of steel or stainless steel. For electricity produced in nuclear and heat power stations turbo generators with high power (more than 100 MW) are used. To cool such generators it is not possible to use standard air-based cooling system. The most demanding parameters of the medium used for cooling high power generators are low viscosity (ρ), high heat capacity (C) and high thermal conductivity (λ). For example hydrogen is a medium meeting the required parameters. Hydrogen used for cooling To improve cooling efficiency, stator of generator is filled with gaseous hydrogen with pressure higher than in the surroundings. Both sides of the rotor shaft are sealed with labyrinth seal. Turbine oil flows in the system with higher pressure than hydrogen pressure inside and protects the leaking of gaseous hydrogen from the stator. At the end of the process the turbine oil it is split up to two parts, the oil saturated with air and the oil saturated with hydrogen. These two media cannot be mixed because this will create dangerous explosive mixture. Therefore the oil from hydrogen side is directed to the vacuuming tank which is equipped by vacuuming pump. 28 Level switches in the power industry – Czech Republic This pump creates vacuum above the level surface and skims off hydrogen from oil. To monitor the emergency levels of oil 2 NIVOMAG MKA-210-9 Ex float level switches are used. The separated, magnetic coupling construction of the NIVOMAG level switch is really advantageous in order to avoid any leaking in the system. Adverse humidity The next adverse factor is humidity or more precisely the water in hydrogen inside the stator. This humidity devalues hydrogen content and may cause corrosion and arcing in the high voltage windings, which reduces lifetime of the generator. For this reason a desiccant-based dryer is used. The desiccant-based dryer – which was manufactured by our partner, called Servis-Energo – is installed in gas circulation loop and allows desiccation of water in hydrogen. All parts of the dryer are made of stainless steel consisting of a tank with vaporizer, a refrigeration condensing unit and a water collector. The water in hydrogen freezes on the cooling fins of vaporizer then after 23 hours of running the condensing unit switches off for 1 hour. The warm hydrogen melts the ice, which flows into water collector tank. The maximum level in water collector is controlled by NIVOMAG MKA-210-9 Ex. NIVELCO Bohemia is very proud on announcing again a successful application story thanks to the great reliability of NIVELCO instruments. We know that good customer care is a key element for success at every time and we proved that we are able to provide smart and simple solution for our customers. Conventionally in milk applications the differential pressure (DPT) transmitters or flush diaphragm based hydrostatic level transmitters like NIVOPRESS D are used. Meeting high hygienic requirements with EchoTREK transmitters The safety and wholesomeness of dairy products is highly dependent upon the effective control of unwanted microorganisms in the dairy plants. One method is Pasteurization which destroys disease-causing bacteria and significantly reduces the number of spoilage organisms. In this second case the devices are equipped with sensor filled with food industry compatible oil (as pressure transmitting medium) and DIN 11851 pipe coupling or Tri-Clamp sanitary process connection. But still as the density of the milk varies batch to batch there can be effect on the accuracy of these transmitters. Also the cost of needed regular maintenance is quite high in these cases. Hence more and more users prefer the non contact measurement solutions. In the milk plant in Mangalore, India there are three milk storage tanks with 15000 litre capacity which should be continuously measured. We have offered our ultrasonic level transmitter EchoTREK SGV-380-2 for these applications suggesting the specific type of installation as there were criticality of CIP process where there can be steam and the temperature can go up to 90-95 ˚C. As everybody knows, food industry products like milk demands high hygienic requirements and it has to be handled with uttermost care against contamination. 30 Ultrasonic level transmitters for milk applications – India C.I.P. stands for "cleaning-in-place" generally done with specific chemicals in first stage and then hot water /stem is used for defined time for sterilization depending on silo structure. But in certain cases it may shoot up to 90–95 ˚C. Also due to the temperature factor and the acid/caustic used for tank/silo cleaning it was necessary to use PVDF transducers, which is more resistive than the standard PP plastic. To reduce the temperature at flange / transducer a perforated nozzle was used. This also helped to drastically reduce the possibility of settling down the steam on transducer face and getting condensed on it. It is true that this arrangement is not possible in all the applications where perforated nozzles cannot be allowed. But at the majority places the solution was well accepted in order to provide suitable circumstances for reliable and accurate level measurement with EchoTREK ultrasonic transmitters. Another really important aspect of the application which made ultrasonic principle suitable is that the milk is cooled in the tank and the filling is performed very slowly from the bottom to avoid foaming. Milk usually tends to foaming which could make ultrasonic level measurement impossible. Because of the temperature factor as well as steam, it should be ensured that the flange / transducer surface temperature does not exceed 90 ˚C and the steam should not get condensed on the transducer surface causing functional difficulties. The main players of this industry segment require economic and safe processes for the feed’s raw material manufacturing. Moreover the produced materials should be suitable for animal consumption approved by International and European feed safety certifications. The most important instrumentation task for our customer was to provide stock management and monitoring solution of the stored raw materials - such as grains, cereals and additives - needed for the feed receipts. The process control system and the operating personnel should always have proper information about the amount of the stored materials in order to be able to keep the needed amount of raw materials prepared and available for meeting the regulations of the strict receipts. The accuracy requirement and the extremely dusty environment were the two main aspects for the instrument selection. We usually recommend ultrasonic level transmitters for such dusty media for example flour or grinded cereals. We had to provide continuous measurement solution for overall 29 closed tanks filled with various grain flours, soybean flour, sunflower flour, and other additives. The measurement data is processed by central control system, so local displaying was not needed. The ideal choice was the EasyTREK integrated ultrasonic level transmitter. 14 concrete silos with 13.5 metre (45 feet) height are equipped with low (30 kHz) frequency EasyTREK SCD 33J 8 Ex type Dust-Ex approved ultrasonic level transmitters. The instruments provide 4-20 mA output proportional with the measured level. The 4-20 mA output signals are processed by a SIEMENS process control system, which controls all technological process. In the other 15 silos with 10 metre (33 feet) height highly adhering powdery materials are stored. To provide reliable and accurate measurement solution for this application again the ultrasonic level transmitters had been chosen. The applied EasyTREK SCD 33J 8 Ex type Dust-Ex approved ultrasonic level transmitters also send the measurement data to the process control system. In accordance to the demand of our customer not only the supplying, but the complete commissioning of the whole measurement system was done by the team of NIVELCO Tehnica. The measurement system was realised in the framework of a successful NIVELCOSiemens cooperation, proving that our instruments are able to face all challenges of this food industry segment. We believe this success is the beginning of future long term cooperation with Siemens. In some countries like in Poland black coal burn corresponds to majority of energy used by industry and households. In a typical coal burned power plant most of coal is stored in outside stockpiles, from where it is transported with various methods for example by conveyor belt. Then the processed coal is finally loaded into coal bunkers as last step before grinding and burning. To keep proper amount of coal in the coal bunkers is critical for the flawless, safe and continuous power production. For this reason level measurement equipment used in coal bunkers have to ensure reliable and basically maintenance free operation preferably in non-contact manner. Due to its construction there is no housing with connections above bunker which made installation easy and economical. The EasyTREK is programmed via HART protocol from PC or MultiCONT universal controller. Main tasks for EasyTREK level transmitters: Ensure continuous supply of coal Prevent overfilling Prevent lack of coal supply to the coal pulverizer Guarantee proper layer of coal inside bunker to block eventual explosion in the grinder Observation of material movements Thanks to its exceptional construction and reliability NIVELCO’s EasyTREK SCD is an ideal choice for these harsh applications. Typical application requirement where EasyTREK SCD is used: Height up to 15 m (50 ft) Often not regular shape Often sophisticated filling systems Dusty environments, high acoustic noises and strong vibrations Result of proper match of requirements and superior EasyTREK SCD features is well over 100 units successfully installed and working flawlessly in last few years by NIVELCO-Poland Sp. z o.o. It is done by THERMOCONT TTJ-511-6 Ex temperature transmitter and UNICONT PMM-311 universal controller. NIVOSWITCH RCM-401-8 Ex vibrating fork level switch is recommended for low/high level limit indication. Edible oil is produced from oil-seeds (for example sunflower- or rapeseed). The main parts of the edible oil production process are the following: raw material storage, shell (removing the husk), press (cold and hot), crude-oil storage, extraction, evaporation. During the primary pressing approximately 70% of the oil content can be extracted from the oil-seeds which are stored in crude-oil storage tanks. The pressed “seed-cakes” are treated with solvents (usually hexane) in the Extractor and then the solvent oil mixture is transferred to evaporation. This evaporation process separates the oil from the solvent resulting that the remaining seed-mud has only 1-2 % oil content. The solvent is filled to the hexane storage tank and the processed oil is filled into the crude-oil storage tank.
