Product/Service Bulletin Nortel Networks Advanced Remote Node (ARN) Five great reasons to choose the ARN • Reduced cost of ownership—The ARN* from Nortel Networks is designed to maximize all aspects of an organization’s internetwork investment. By extending LAN and WAN interface flexibility and performance, the ARN delivers the highest level of investment protection of any available enterpriseaccess platform. • Comprehensive LAN/WAN support—Nortel Networks Routing Services (BayRS*) supports all major LAN protocols (IP, IPX, AppleTalk, DECnet, OSI, VINES, ST-II and XNS), bridging (Transparent, Translation and Source Route), WAN options (HDLC, PPP, Frame Relay, ISDN, X.25, SMDS and ATM DXI), dial services (Dial Backup, Bandwidth-on-Demand, and Dial-on-Demand), and SNA integration (DLSw, APPN, Binary Synchronous Communications [BSC] Pass-Through and Polled Async). The ARN also provides an X.25 PAD option for customers migrating X.25 applications to IP-based networks. • Optimizing bandwidth management—Optimized bandwidth via software compression, protocol prioritization, traffic filters, and bandwidth aggregation delivers increased network performance. These bandwidth management features enable low-cost links to achieve the throughput of more expensive WAN connections. • Breadth of routing platforms— Nortel Networks broad, scalable product family satisfies connectivity, performance, and availability requirements ranging from small remote sites to corporate backbones. • Best-in-class network management—Optivity* provides complete management solutions for the smallest remote office to the largest network center. Nortel Networks is the only company that provides a unified management solution across the leading management platforms. Additionally, Optivity is the industry leader in embedded RMON support, offering full RMON-based solutions for routers, switches, and hubs. Nortel Networks wins! • High performance—With route forwarding throughput of up to 20,000 packets per second, the ARN can handle the most demanding remote branch applications with performance to spare. • Multifaceted platform—No other remote router can provide the range of integrated WAN devices, serial ports, and LAN interfaces as the modular ARN platform. • Pay-as-you-grow—Only the ARN provides users with an access routing platform designed to support the growth of your remote office. Start with a single LAN-by-single WAN system, add a V.34 modem for analog backup, then upgrade to digital backup via ISDN BRI. As the network grows, customers can add a second LAN interface (Ethernet or Token Ring) for segmentation, or an RMON probe to monitor network usage patterns, all within one compact, modular chassis. • Adjunct features—The ARN offers such value-added features as an integral V.34 modem for analog dial service routing or out-of-band console interface access, redundant power, removable PCMCIA flash memory, an RMON hardware probe, or E1 CSU/DSU support. Hot buttons • Performance—The ARN router’s high-performance architecture ensures concurrent execution of compute-intensive applications, including SNA network integration (DLSw, APPN, SDLC), WAN bandwidth optimization (compression, prioritization, filters), and remote-office link security (filtering, encryption). • Integration—Integrated WAN transmission device options include 56K or T1/E1/ FT1/FE1 DSU/CSUs, ISDN BRI with or without NT1, and V.34 modems. • Connectivity—The ARN supports up to two LAN (Fast Ethernet, Ethernet, and/or Token Ring) and nine (WAN and/or legacy) interfaces. • Investment protection—The “future-proof ” design of the ARN provides ample performance and network interfaces for current and future application support. • Dual LAN capability—All ARN models can be configured, either at the factory or as a field upgrade, with a second LAN interface. In addition to providing mixed LAN media support (Fast Ethernet, Ethernet, and Token Ring), dual-LAN capability allows small sites to configure two “communities” as separate LANs, providing network security via LAN “firewall” techniques. • High-speed WAN—The highperformance design of the ARN ensures high-speed WAN communications for remote sites requiring full and/or multiple T1/E1 services. The aggregate forwarding rate of the ARN easily supports the industrywide migration to faster, multiplededicated and/or dial WAN links.c Automated Fire/security Teller terminal Teller Machine (ATM) service concentrator ISDN Typical applications • Legacy traffic transport—The ARN provides up to nine serial interfaces, enabling remote site users to pass SNA and X.25 traffic over the multiprotocol backbone via X.25 PAD, Nortel Networks DLSw for SDLC, Transparent Synchronous Pass-Through, BSC Pass-Through, Polled Async, and IPEX. These features reduce WAN costs through the consolidation of parallel links normally used in connecting remote and corporate locations.
