Northwest Stoves Celebrating 25 Years...Our History (Part 3) by Dawne Schildt
Welcome back! As you know, He did a little bit of everything Northwest Stoves Ltd is celebrating the company’s 25th anniversary. There are several other milestones also being celebrated in 2002.
in the beginning, but mostly worked in shipping and receiving and was the outside sales rep for the entire province of BC.
First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to wish Wayne a happy 50th birthday, which he celebrated on September 20th. We also had a couple of 40th birthdays this year (I will let you guess who those were) and Mike and Andrea Harstone’s 20th wedding anniversary.
1982 was the year that Northwest Stoves Ltd. developed and manufactured (with Gott Enterprises) a catalytic woodstoves. The late Dr. Stockton G. Barnett, the Director of R & D at the Condar Company, designed the Northwest Model #1 Catalytic Woodstoves. Dr. Barnett also developed the Condar Stovetemp
Reid Harvey is marking his 10th year with Northwest Stoves this year and Mike’s 20th anniversary with the company is coming up. Congratulations all! Speaking of Mike, it was in 1982 while working at Vaglio Fireplace that Mike met Wayne. At that time, Vaglio was not owned by the Harstone family, but had been in prior years, and would end up in their hands again in the future. It was while Wayne was on a sales call at Vaglio that Mike asked him if he was hiring. After an "interview" over dinner at the Keg in North Vancouver, Mike was hired.
Thermostat. The stove was pretty ugly, but it worked (See diagram on page 2)
well.
Along with manufacturing Fisher Stoves and the Northwest Model #1, Wayne had also become a Lopi licensee in 1981 and manufactured the stoves for Western Canada. Wayne recalls one New Years Eve when Kurt Rumens (who is the driving force behind Lopi) drove up from Washington State, to the manufacturing plant in North Vancouver, with some doors for the stoves so that production could continue. One of the reasons for strong woodstoves sales in the early 1980’s was the Canada Oil Substitution Program (C.O.S.P.). The Government of Canada provided grants to homeowners to help defray the costs of converting from oil to less costly energy sources. This program ran from October 1980 to February 1985.
HAPPY FIVE-O WAYNE! Wayne shares some Birthday cake with sons Jamie and Grady, wife Zoe is taking the photo.

Quick Tips: Stove Loading Double check an enamel stove before you load it on the customer’s truck. A simple check with the customer, can save everybody time and money. We all know how careless handling can chip an enamel stove when moving it from the truck to the house. No Scratch Kettles and Steamers To prevent kettles (or steamers) from scratching a soapstone or enamel stove: Attach a couple of strips of self-adhesive flat window gasket to the underside of the kettle. The heat-resistant gasket will keep the kettle off the stove, but close enough so it can heat quickly.

Denim Log Carriers
HearthStone Steamer Adds Humidity
Because of the growing number of requests, we now have a log bag (carrier) available. Tote your firewood in style and comfort with this heavy-duty carrier that will hold more wood than you want to carry. It’s convenient for stocking the fireplace with wood for the day, and keeps your house and your clothing clean. You will be able to carry a large load of logs without spilling a trail of wood chips and debris on the carpet!
Over the years, dealers and homeowners have requested a steamer that they can use safely on their HearthStone soapstone stove. In the past, we’ve had no compatible product available that was reliable and would not scratch the stove's surface. Until now.
Made from rugged black denim, the bag incorporates 2" wide nylon straps that completely encircle the bag to support the weight of the load. For additional strength, nylon is sewn around the top edges, making it an ideal multi-purpose carry all. The bags are sized for big loads at approximately 21"L X 15"D X 11"W. They come printed with a flame/logset logo on one side and come delivered in an individually sealed transparent polybag.
The new Hearthstone Steamer is made of the same beautiful soapstone that makes a HearthStone stove so unique. The steamer has a matte black cast lid with plenty of air holes for the steam to escape. The Steamer is beautifully decorated with many design features found on the stoves.
The Steamer has a suggested retail of $149.00 (code # AH-9099112). It is available for shipping, so get your orders in now.

On the distribution side of the business along with the Projet chimney some of the other products carried included Flame and Co. gas logs, Kel Kem, Dampney, Forrest Paint, RSF, Norwegian tile shields, Energy Vent, Iso-kaern Chimney and Portland Willamette doors and screens. The company was well on its way to becoming
the full service distributor that it is today. As always any submissions that you may have would be greatly appreciated. I would like to thank Bruce Prittie of Slegg Lumber in Sydney for his contributions. Hopefully I will have the full story to share with you in the next edition.
SALES SUGGESTION: Sell the Denim Log Carrier two at a time. It is easier to carry a balanced load; one in each hand. Suggested retail: Denim Log Carrier.............$29.95 (code# DZ-LB202) Fax or Phone your orders in to Dawne now. Stove line drawing: 1982 Northwest Stoves Model #1 Catalytic Woodstoves
A Returned Troubleshooting Tip: Smoking in Woodstoves Goods Summarized from HearthStone’s technical tip #58 Reminder Smoking in wood stoves is perhaps the most common and sometimes the most difficult problem to solve. However, do not rule out the obvious. Remember, it is not the stove’s job to safely vent smoke. It is the chimney’s. When smoking occurs think chimney, chimney, chimney – once the chimney is ruled out, check the remaining items on the list. "My other stove worked on this chimney!" This is often heard when an EPA stove replaces an older model. EPA stoves are much more efficient than earlier units, therefore their requirements are different.
Due to an EPA stove’s high efficiency, very little heat (in the form of smoke/particulate emission) is lost into the chimney, making the venting requirements much more strict. An EPA stove cannot be installed into an existing fireplace and be expected to work like the previous stove. To reiterate an earlier point, it is not the job of the stove to exhaust the by-products of combustion. Even if a seal is broken in a stove, with the proper draft, air will be drawn into the stove and smoke will not leak out. When smoking occurs, save time – don’t start your troubleshooting with the stove. Check the chimney!
