NOVEMBER 2012
The mission of WIE is to facilitate the recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines globally. IEEE WIE envisions a vibrant community of EEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate for the benefit of humanity.
Hurricane Sandy affects our friends on the Eastern Seaboard USA. On behalf of the IEEE WIE Committee, please accept our heartfelt thoughts and concerns for all of our members and friends affected the storms and aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. We hope that you and your families are safe, and that times goes quickly in recovering from the storms and getting things back to normal. Please be encouraged and know that time brings change, and things will get better. Participate in the NAE Energy Ethics Video Challenge. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Online Ethics Center (OEC) is pleased to announce the launch of an Energy Ethics Video Challenge and to call attention to two
events on Energy Ethics in Science and Engineering that may be of interest. For the Energy Ethics Video Challenge, individual students or teams are invited to prepare and submit a short video on an aspect of energy ethics related to energy policy, consumption, innovation, public engagement, or grid technology. For more information, view the video challenge details at http://onlineethics.org/Projects/Video Challenge.aspx.The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2012.

IEEE WOMEN IN ENGINEERING NEWSLETTER
WIE “Love” Engineering! Do “You” Love Engineering, Too? Do Tell…. Do you go to work every day and do what you love? Do you love what you do? Do tell. WIE want to hear about it! WIE are excited about Engineering and the many women that are a part of WIE! Women, who go to work every day and do what they love, and love what they do. You are the essence of the WIE, the heart and soul of what makes the purpose and mission of the WIE a reality. WIE delight in your success and your zest and passion for Engineering. And, we want to hear your personal stories so that they might be a means to guide, mentor, and encourage other women in engineering. In today’s world, communication is at its peak, and so are technological advancements. But, behind all of this and the key to making this a reality are “people”, and they have a story to tell…. WIE want to hear about it. WIE would like to profile your accomplishments in the monthly publication of the WIE Newsletter. WIE know that we have members out there who are doing a great job in the many fields and faceted disciplines of Engineering, and we want to recognize you within the WIE Community. If you or someone you know would like to share their story, WIE would be delighted to hear from you. Please provide the person’s name, job title, employment information, a picture, a summary of what the person does, and what the person likes about Engineering to be included in the monthly newsletter. WIE would like to profile members working in all facets of engineering, ranging from doctors, scientists, educators, engineers, analysts, technicians, support functions, etc. WIE will profile one to two individuals monthly. Send all correspondences to Keyana Tennant at
[email protected] or Paulette January at

Hampton Roads Section, and volunteer, Power and Energy Society; Erin Lawler, president, Hampton University IEEE Student Branch; and, Karissa Vaughn, president, Hampton University Society of Women Engineers Student Section, and IEEE Student member, together consisted of an informal panel at this IEEE Women in Engineering sponsored discussion. The goal of the event was to enlighten attendees about STEM careers and offer guidance on how to select the right courses in high school in preparation for college coursework in a STEM field. Ms. Ammentorp, engineer, Newport News Shipbuilding, provided a presentation on technical career opportunities in the Hampton Roads community. Ms. Lawler and Ms. Vaughn discussed academic challenges to anticipate and preparations to make for success in school. The young ladies attending the event had many questions about different career possibilities as well as concerns about the low number of female students enrolled in technical classes at the high school age group. Responses from Granby students who attended the event include the following feedback: Response from Sarah H., Grade: 9, Granby High School, Norfolk VA: My experience with the Women’s engineering program was very educational and eyeopening. I enjoyed having the women from IEEE and the graduates from Hampton University come to Granby High school to share with me the broad job opportunities women have now a days. I thought it was amazing when they shared their experience about being the only girls in many of their engineering classes. I could not believe that they did not find being the only girl in their classes. It really opened my eyes and showed me that women have had to work to be able to be in the work fields that they are in today. I

felt more encouraged to try new things out in high school when Erin and Karissa told me that you should never settle for less than your worth because you don’t seem like you fit in. I thought that the meeting yesterday not only got me hooked on becoming an engineer but also made me proud to be a woman. Tanisha R., Grade: 10, Granby High School, Norfolk, VA: The Women in Engineering (IEEE) meeting that I attended was very interesting and informal. The ladies that hosted it did a great job at explaining what the program was about and what they did for a living in engineering, also how far being a woman in the engineering field could take me. The information that I received made a tremendous impact/influence on my life and what I see myself doing in the future. I am looking forward to more meetings and different programs that I can get into to build my career plan for the future. Thank You10/11/12 Deborah Marshall, chair, Granby High Faculty Career and Technical Education Department, at the urging of Sabrina Gunton, Granby Faculty member, organized the event which may be the first activity in a budding partnership to awareness and support of under-represented high school students with interests in Engineering and other STEM based careers. In support of the positive student response at this event Granby Faculty members are discussing with Hampton Roads Section volunteers the possibility of organizing a Granby High School Women in Engineering Group. -- Submitted by Jennifer L.
