Campus Prepares for GroupWise with Information Sessions and Classes on Archiving By Mary Schoeler
What is happening: The IPFW Faculty/Staff email system (cc:Mail and Organizer) will be replaced by Novell GroupWise in the next several months because the product that we have been using is being “retired” by the manufacturer (Lotus). The search for a new system took several months. IT Services’ User Support and Tech Support groups examined the top products in the marketplace before narrowing the recommendation to Novell Groupwise. Groupwise provides all current functionality of e-mail and new feature s of integrated personal calendaring and task management. Additionally, it has full featured web-accessibility for remote access of your e -mail and calendar, global address-book functionality, etc. It is easy to learn and use! Information sessions: Over 160 people attended the GroupWise Information Sessions in October! Many thanks to everyone who attended. If you didn’t have
a chance to attend, more sessions are scheduled for November (see the schedule on the back of this InfoShare). The informational sessions demonstrate benefits, features, training plans, time schedules, what you will need to do to prepare, and also provide a time for your questions and answers. cc:Mail classes on archiving: Any e -mail that you want to move to the new e-mail system will need to be archived in cc:Mail to prepare it for the move. Many campus users regularly archive and so they have this process mastered. But, many others will need to learn how to archive so that they can migrate e-mail messages they want to reference after the move to the new system. Therefore, we have added many archiving classes to the short-course schedule. Faculty/Staff cc:Mail users will migrate to the new product, department by department beginning in (Continued on page 4)
Academic Counseling and Career Services Merger Complete By Scott Vitz
The Academic Counseling and Career Services departments have merged and now reside in Kettler Hall, Room 109, a space formerly occupied by the Financial Aid department. Over the past several months, IT Services has worked to facilitate this merger by pulling wire and moving equipment from several locations around campus to KT 109. Stop by to take a look.

Moving Up from WordPerfect 5 to WordPerfect 9 If you are one of those people who have never found the need to upgrade from WordPerfect 5, you’re not alone. Many consider WP5 to be the workhorse of word processing software but the time is near for putting this old horse out to pasture. The good news is that WordPerfect 9 can open native files created in previous versions of WordPerfect, as well as foreign files created in other word processing applications. WordPerfect automatically converts files created in many other word processing packages. To open native or foreign files
1. Click File, Open. 2. Choose the drive where the file is stored from the Look In list box. 3. Double-click the folder in which the file is stored. 4. Choose All Files from the File Type list box. 5. Double -click the filename. To save a document to a new location or with a new name 1. Click File, Save As. 2. Choose the drive where you want to store the document from the Save In list box. 3. Double-click the folder in which you want to save the document. 4. Type a name for the document in the File Name box. (Note: WP 9 file names can now exceed 8 characters. The file, bingosht.978 (pictured above) should be renamed to bingosheet 978 or bingosheet-978. The Windows Operating System will automatically add the WordPerfect file extension .wpd when you select the file type box below the file name box.) 5. Click Save.

To display or hide the Reveal Codes Window Codes are inserted in your document nearly every time you use a WordPerfect feature . For example, when you make text bold, codes surround the word in the Reveal Codes window. To display or hide the Reveal Codes window. 1. Click View, Reveal Codes. 2. A check mark next to the Reveal Codes command indicates that Reveal Codes are displayed. Tip: You can also Reveal Codes by pressing Alt + F3. Help Topics If problems with your old WordPerfect 5.1 files continue to plague you, the Corel Knowledge Base may have the answer. Simply use the Knowledge Base Tab from the Help Topics Screen - type the keywords you want to search for and click Search. Corel will open the Online knowledge base search engine at Corel.com through your Web browser. As technology continually challenges us with new hardware and software, keep one thing in mind: To work with DOS files is human to upgrade is Divine. The
new version of Microsoft Office 2001 for the Macintosh was officially released by Microsoft on October 11, 2000. CDs will be available from Follett's IPFW bookstore around November 1, 2000 at $5.00 per CD. (The Macintosh operating systems are not included in the Microsoft site license agreement as they are products of Apple Computer, Inc.) Each Office 2001 application features an elegant new interface as well as seamless compatibility with Office 2000 for Windows and easier information-sharing that goe s beyond the suite of applications. JumpStart to Morph
By Scott Vitz
JumpStart, the technology short course program for IPFW students, will be experiencing some ma jor changes in the coming months; however, IT Services’ commitment to provide students with free technology training will remain intact. These changes are rooted in the idea that using different methods will enable IT Services to magnify the current progr am’s strengths, while minimizing its weaknesses. A list and explanation of the most prominent changes will be discussed. First, the Communication Department’s role in this program will be phased out. The Communication Department helped IT Services plan and launch JumpStart three years ago and has since provided instructors to conduct the training sessions. Moreover, the scheduling of special sessions, perhaps the most successful aspect of the program, was handled by the Communication Department. Needless to say, with the assistance of the Communication Department, JumpStart has stabilized. Unfortunately, the regularly scheduled training sessions have experienced low attendance. So, what was intended to be a classroom type instruction has often become a tutoring session with one -on-one or one -on-few instruction. IT Services believes that by creating an alliance with the
Transitional Studies Department and adapting some of the services to their fine tutoring-assistance model will enhance their qua lity and have a positive effect on the program overall. The special sessions, which have experienced great success, will remain as is with the exception of some minor differences in how they are scheduled. Second, in addition to an alliance with the Transitional Studies Department and maintaining the special sessions, IT Services will make computer-based technical training available to IPFW students. IT Services recently purchased a license from NETg, a leading developer of technology-based training that seeks to provide anytime, anywhere learning through the Internet, giving students access to NETg's library of hundreds of technical courses.

Student Labs . . .
Do You Need Software Installed for Spring? By William Baden
If you have obtained specialized software that you want your Spring semester classes to use in the student labs, you should submit your installation request before November 15th. Your request should include the completed form available at: http://www.its.ipfw.edu/docs/forms/ lab_request.html as well as copies of t he license limitations, installation instructions, and the software. This will allow time for scheduling the install and testing the applications in the labs. Turn in your request to the Help Desk, KT206. If you have any questions, please contact William Baden, Coordinator of Academic Computing, 481-6202.
Third, the name may change from JumpStart to STEPS (Student Technology Education Programs). This is the name Indiana University currently uses for similar programs and more clearly communicates IT Services’ purpose. While all of the details have yet to be hammered out, it is evident that JumpStart will evolve. Again, IT Services commitment to provide students with free technology training will remain unchanged. Please inform the students with whom you interact of this technical training available and encourage them to take advantage of it. November to be completed by May 1. Training sessions will be offered continuously throughout the process to provide opportunity for all to attend. cc:Mail bulletin boards change to Web –based: The current cc:Mail Bulletin Boards are going to be replaced by a Web-based version accessible by all campus members. The new Bulletin Boards are available at http://bboards.ipfw.edu. This change is being made now because as departments move from cc:Mail to GroupWise, they will no longer be able to access the old cc:M ail bulletin boards. The new web-based bulletin boards will include all of the existing bulletin board topic areas as well as ne w topic areas that are especially for students (Instructions will be on the bboards Web page).

Plan Ahead for Spring WebCT Courses by Samantha Birk Distributed Education Instructional Designer
Over the holiday break IT Services will upgrade WebCT to version 3.0. For this to happen as smoothly as possible, the current version needs to be taken off-line for a few days. WebCT will be down December 21st - 27th. Barring complications, when WebCT comes back on-line Wednesday December 27th, all courses hosted on courses.ipfw.edu will be using version 3.0. This upgrade boasts many changes as
well as some nice enhancements including: A more consistent user interface, A new group of supported platforms, and several tools to help new users get started. In addition, there is a Syllabus tool that helps users easily create their syllabi, using pre-defined sections or adding custom sections. In addition, there is the Designer Map, which acts as the control center for your course. It is a single screen with links to all of the Course Utilities, Course Components and Tools. W i t h all these changes, you should begin thinking about your Spring course. CELT is here to
