PMD Cone Woofer Makes These Speakers Ideal for Home Theater Sound Home theater speakers must combine high power capabilities with excellent sensitivity and dynamic range, while being designed to prevent listening fatigue. The new 515 PMD Series speakers meet these requirements by using a PMD (Polymer-injected Mica Diaphragm) cone woofer. This diaphragm is composed of 30% high quality white Indian Pearl Mica, chosen for the significant contribution it makes to sound quality. In order to maximize its distinctive qualities, absolutely no coloring is added to the material. We’ve also varied the cone thickness, making it thicker in the middle, which has been shown to improve performance. Kapton bobbins help to increase S/N ratio. The cone is extremely light, yet also tough and durable, with excellent response speed. Independent Direct Polymer-Injected Crossover Networks Mica Microscope (NS-515F) Photo Crosstalk distortion that can result from signal interference between coils, cables and drivers is kept to an absolute minimum by using fully independent direct crossover connections between the speaker drivers. Edge-Wound Rectangular Voice Coils (NS-515F) TThe voice coils have an edge-wound, rectangular structure with a wire moment 20% higher than conventional round voice coils, significantly improving the efficiency with which they convert magnetic flux to motion.

PMD’s superior characteristics help ensure outstanding sound quality. In order to effectively reproduce digital sound, speakers must have the following capabilities: wide dynamic range, high efficiency, sensitive response, and high linearity suspension. The PMD used in the 515 Series Speakers plays an important role in providing these capabilities. Its strong points are listed in the chart. Density affects the speed of signal transmission and shows the speakers’ excellent linearity. Young’s Ratio represents strength, resulting in high efficiency and sensitive response. Absorbed Vibration Ratio is the value of internal loss; the lower this value, the lower the signal loss, so it also contributes to high efficiency and sensitive response. And finally, Acoustic Velocity represents the overall velocity of signal transmission, an important element in reproducing digital sound. With all these properties, PMD is a material perfectly suited to achieving the highest, most natural sound quality. The goal of digital sound composers is sound creation that permits the reproduction of realistic sound, including dialogue and sound effects, and PMD helps make this possible.
suspension. The high strength frame ensures that the sound image remains clear, with no distortion, while the high linearity suspension contributes to dynamic expression at both low and high volume levels.
Bass Reflex Ports These bass reflex speakers use two ports rather than the usual one. They are precisely tuned to achieve best low frequency response and higher attack speed.
3cm (1-1/8") Aluminum Dome Tweeter The proven capabilities and durability of this aluminum dome tweeter made it the ideal choice for these speakers. It can reproduce frequencies up to 50kHz (-10dB) and is powerful, too, thanks to the same type of strontium ferrite magnet used in the woofer (NS515F/NS-C515). The diffuser over the tweeter helps improve frequency response and directionality.
Full Use of Three-Way Mitered Construction Yamaha speakers have employed 45° mitered-joint construction at the cabinet corners and baffle/body joints for many years. On the 515 PMD Series, mitered construction is also used for the back panel, improving the tightness of the joints so the entire cabinet behaves as a single body. This improves low frequency response and reduces unwanted vibration. We’ve also used three different types of
absorbent material inside the cabinet to further dampen vibrations.

Side Board
Bass Conventional Mortised Construction Anchor (NS-515F) The Bass Baffle Board Anchor Conventional Mortising uses five steel plates to provide Side Board stable support and also dampen vibrations that can adversely affect sound quality. Bi-Wiring Connection Capability (NS-515F and NS-C515) Bi-wiring means that instead of connecting the speaker to the amplifier or receiver with two cables (plus and minus), you can use four cables: two for the woofer(s) and two for the tweeter. This decreases modulation distortion for purer sound quality. Mahogany Veneer Cabinets As one of the world’s leading piano manufacturers, Yamaha has a long history of wood-working expertise. The 515 PMD Series speaker cabinets are assembled from carefully selected mahogany and given the same luxurious and environmentally friendly urethane/polyester finish as our fine grand pianos.
