BALDWINSVILLE MESSENGER EXTRA, JAN. 23 TO Fgt. 27, 201 7;
Big Chill returns this Friday, Saturday to BMIle By Erin Wisneski Cristina Jardine believes this year's Polar Bear Plunge will blow last year's record out of the water. "This year we are expecting close to 200 plungers; said Jardine, chair of 2013 B'ville Big Chill Planning Committee. Last year's event drew a record 150 plungers for the chilly dip into the Seneca River, raising roughly $27,000 — another record. The two-day Big Chill event, which will be held this Friday and Saturday, features a new non-plunger category for the Polar Bear Plunge for those who want to fimdraise for the event but choose to stay warm on the shore rather than taking the leap. There is also a new exclusive VIP tent for both plungers and non-plungers, which will have pizza and drinks for fundraising guests as well as a photo booth, donated by Edges Photography, for teams to have fun with. "[This is] our way of thanking all the people who fundraise for this incredible event; Jardine said. By far the main event of the two-day affair, the plunge begins at noon and takes place in waves, so there is a new plunging group to watch approximately every 20 minutes.
ERIN W1SNESKI
Polar Bear Plungers bravely take the icy-cold leap into the Seneca River at Mercer Park during last year's Big Chill event in Baldwinsville. last year's Polar Bear Plunge raised $27,000. This year's event begins at 7 p.m. Friday and continues all day Saturday. "The plunge is really something to witness; Jardine said. "Teams of people run into the river down a long red carpet in costumes to crazy songs. It's a lot of fun to watch; The break between also gives spectators the opportunity to warm up in the event's heated tent and to check out the Best in Bowl food competition. "We will have a greater variety of restaurants in our Best in Bowl food contest including a new dessert category," Jardine said, adding Tim Horton's will also be on site offering coffee and free hot chocolate and a chili cook-off will take place between 2 and 3 p.m. in the tent. While the plunge is always a highlight of the event, there is so much more going on during this two-day affair including the new Viva
B'ville, which takes place at 7 p.m. Friday night at the Red Mill Inn. "[This event] has been revamped to indude a little bit of everything - casino games, wine, live music, Speadis Family Candy Shoppe Chocolates, food from Tabatha's Family Tree, raffles, prizes and more," Jardine said. "It has been such a popular event in the past, we have changed it so it is no longer a sit-down event so that more people can attend. We hate having to turn people away, but tickets sell out fast" While the afternoon features family-oriented events including children's activities, Saturday night belongs to the adults - the Poker Bear Express, held from 5 to 9 p.m. at a variety of establishments in downtown Baldwinsville, closes out the two-day event with a grand finale party at
Fat Johnny's. "The Poker Bear Express is a combination poker game and pub crawL It's an easy way to check out different bars in the village of B'ville," Jardine said. "We are excited to have some new bars participating like Suds Factory River Grill. The Poker Run is a great way to warm up after a long day outside' Proceeds from the 2013 B'ville Big Chill benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Central NY Chapter and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central NY. "Both local charities are active in helping to promote the event and supply the resources to help it grow bigger and better each year," Jardine said. "The event also benefits the Greater Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce, which essentially
means it helps give back to all chamber members. With the money the chamber receives from the Big Chill, we are able to budget for more educational opportunities, networking events, advertising opportunities and offer more resources to our more than 200 members" Jardine noted that The Big Chill would not be possible if it weren't for the support from local business, especially TOPS Friendly Markets, Pathfinder Bank and the Village of Baldwinsville. The event was established six years ago in an effort to bring people into.downtown Baldwinsville during a typically slow time of year, Jardine said. And it has succeeded as nearly 2,000 people are drawn to the village during the twoday event. "This is a perfect opportunity for businesses to offer sales and specials to help attract new customers," Jardine said_ "The B'ville Big Chill really has something for everyone." There is still time to register for the plunge; visit b-vile. corn for more information and to purchase tickets for Viva B'ville and the Saturday night Poker Run. To learn more about the event, like Greater Baldwinsville Chamber of Commerce and The Big Chill - Baldwinsville, NY on Facebook.

RECO RD NUMBERS Paige's Butterfly Run gives $220,000 to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital
Kr";
By Erin Wisneski
Chris Arnold credits online fundraising for Paige's Butterfly Run's record breaking numbers this year. Held in June, the event drew 2,650 participants (a 14 percent increase over 2011) and raised $253,000 - the previous high was $168,000 in 2011. The organization was able to present Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital with a check for $220,000 on Dec. 31. "[This is] by far the largest gift we have ever made; said Arnold. Founded in 1997, the event is named for and held in honor ofArnold'sdaughter, Paige Yeomans Arnold, who was a first grade student at Palmer Elementary School in Baldwinsville when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She was treated at what is now Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital before succumbing to the disease in 1994.

Ellen Yeomans and Chits Arnold present Dr. Welch, professor and chair of Pediatrics at Upstate Medical University, with a $220,000 check for Golisano Children's Hospital. Yeomans and Arnold represent Paige's Butterfly Run, which raised a record amount for the hospital this year. The event is named after Yeomans and Arnold's daughter, Paige, who died after battling leukemia. She was a first grade student at Palmer Elementary School. "Having a child with cancer is a tough place to be," Arnold said. "I think everyone involved [with Paige's Butterfly Run] understands what it is we are trying to do and is supportive of that whether it

be through their registration fee or that plus their personal fundraising." This year's $220,000 donation was divided into five different funds: Paige's Cancer Research Fund ($85,000); Paige's Family

Since its inception, the run has raised a total of $1.5 million. According to Toni Gary, director of Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital Community Relations, donations from Paige's Butterfly Run have helped to create a more normal atmosphere at the hospital for the families and children who have to stay for extended
periods of time, specifically through Paige's Family Fun Fund. This fund, which received $17,000 from PBR this year alone, provides child life specialists with the resources necessary to achieve a home-like environment on the inpatient and outpatient floors of the Dr. William J. Waters Center for Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders, Money is used to help patients and their families enjoy a family meal, create birthday and holiday celebrations, and to generally lighten the lives of patients when they are in the hospital for treatment. "With money from Paige's Run, we are able to do so much more Gary said, adding child life specialists draw on these

funds to provide children with the latest videos, games and activities while they are receiving treatment at the hospital. This is especially important for children enduring a longer stay at the hospital, Gary said. "When you are seeing 5,000 visits with cancer patients alone per year, [Paige's Family Fun Fund] really makes a difference in what we have for the children," Gary said. Paige's Butterfly Run not only raises money for the hospital, but also helps to raise awareness. "In the community, when you talk about 2,600 participants, there is so much more awareness that we have gained from participants, families and friends through Paige's Butterfly Run," Gary said. "It helps to make people more aware of what Golisano is doing; people realize children do have cancer and they are being treated in Syracuse"

January is National Mentoring Month Mentors are makinga difference herein BaldwinSville through a unique partnership between the Volunteer Center and the Baldwinsville Central School District Mentors meet with their stud, ent (huing the school day once it week throughout the academic year to prairthe an extra layer of one-on" one :9111;. The Volunteer Center's Mentoiiii been in existence in one form or n eañ' 45 years and is one of the few programs Of its Wain-Onondaga County. Understanding and bellevintkithe Vane of a Mentoring Program, it is dtielii`the lliadership and willingness of school staff here in our 5601 district to go above and beyond that has enabled thii program to continue and expand. To be a mentor, you don't need special skills, just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance • and encouragement to a young person. Currently, there are 65 students who are paired up with either an adult mentor o'r a high school junior or senior in all of our elementary schools, Ray Middle School and Durgee Junior High This year for the first time, there Is a 'mentor who continues to meet with her student at Baker, marldng their fifth year together. We all win when young people succeed in schooL Research proves that caring volunteers working with students of all ages have the power to help kids boost academic achievement and also improved self-esteem and social skills. 'The Volunteer Center would like to thank all of our mentors for their time and dedication,' said Nancy Conley, executive director of the BVC. "Our Mentoring Program could not continue without these special volunteers:' If you would like more information about becoming a mentor, please call the Baldwinsville Volunteer Center at 638 - 0251. Comfort food for our cold winters By Annette Sica

Hi, everyone! January is the month of dreams. A new year; a time for new beginnings, a time to hope, a time to change, a time to start over. Do you want to go back to school or change careers? Do you want to start your own business? Do you want to retire? Are you planning on getting married or having a child? Have you dreamed of a lifetime vacation in far away places? On a smaller note, it's time to relax, finish that puzzle, or sweater or needlepoint pillow. Finish
recipes you've been meaning to make. Here is a recipe for cheese potatoes perfect for our cold winters. It will warm and comfort you. The recipe is perfect with meatloaf, chicken, fish or beef. You make it in a skillet and cook it on top of the stove, not in the oven, an easy scalloped potato dish. Take care, everyone! Annette Sica is a resident of Baldwinsville. Years ago, she used to write a column for the Baldwinsville Messenger titled 'Coffee

Library Focus
Check out what's new on library web page By Val Chism This month's program list is growing short, but there's still plenty to do at the library every day. Sebco is a recent addition with a small collection of high interest reading for teens and adult new readers. These materials can be downloaded directly from our webpage with a library card and a pin number, but, unlike many of our other digital items, you won't have to wait for your hold to come in. Our current selection includes high interest fiction, a number of biographies of current writers and celebrities and some nonfiction titles on holidays and living with various health problems. Community News By Erin Wisneski Baldwinsville's Meals on Wheels program is in desperate need of drivers. Operating out of Canton Woods Senior Center, the local program depends on the generosity of its volunteers to deliver hot and cold meals Monday through Friday to those who are in need and immobile. Unfortunately, during the winter months, the volunteer pool decreases in size. "The need for drivers is great at this time because many of our drivers are going south; said Donna Metz, the Baldwinsville Meals on Wheels coordinator. She added, "Our clients are growing and we have to add more routes." Delivering to Baldwinsville and parts of Liverpool, the operation depends on numerous volunteers to prepare and deliver meals, which reach 94 people in the greater Baldwinsville area daily. The program is also in need of volunteers to relieve those who consistently donate their

B'ville rallies in support of Webster Fire Department On Dec. 24, tragedy struck. Four volunteer.firefighters were shot while responding to a fire in Webster, a suburb of Rochester. The gunman, William Spengler, shot and killed Webster Police Lt. Mike Chiapperini, 43, and Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, in addition to seriously injuring Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino before taking his own life. This tragedy sent shock waves through an already horrified nation still grieving from the loss in Newtown, Ct. Rather than giving in to despair, however, communities have rallied in support of the West Webster Fire Department including greater Baldwinsville. On Saturday, Dec. 29, the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company held a boot drive raising more than $5,000, which will be given to the families of Chiapperini, Kaczowlca, Hofsetter and Scardino. According to BVFC President Tom Perkins, the company was acting on a request through the State Fire and Mutual Aid System to help the families of those killed and injured in this "senseless tragedy; "[The drivel was an important cause to us in Baldwinsville because the fire service is a brotherhood, we all feel the pain when a firefighter is killed or injured; Perkins said. President Tom Perkins Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company fact that sometimes firefighters die in the line of duty. What we don't accept is that a firefighter should die the way these brothers did." Under the direction of Deputy Chief Tony McIntyre, several boot drop locations were established throughout greater Baldwinsville. The response was overwhelming; Perkins said. "I think that when people think about what we do, we are supposed to be the good guys, and the West Webster firefighters were just going about their business, something they do every day, and to be gunned down just is tragic; Perkins said. Other volunteers had the West Webster Fire Department in their hearts, too. Mike Zimmerman, Mike Evans, 'Ryan McNeil and Drew Gilbert, members of the Belgium-Cold Springs Fire District,
attended services on Dec. 29 for the fallen volunteers in Rochester. "We all realize that what happened in Webster could just as easily have happened here; said Bill Merriam, chairman of the BCSFD. "People in public service everywhere share a common bond, the desire to help others in their communities and when one is hurting, we all are hurting. So we support one another to get through the tough times." "We also commend the Baldwinsville firefighters for staffing multiple 'boot-fill' locations on a rather nasty day and thank everyone that contributed to a truly noble cause," Merriam continued, adding that the BCSFD will also be making a donation to the West Webster Fire Department. If you are interested in making a donation, visit westwebsterfd.org .
"We use seven drivers a day, each with about a one and a half-hour shift," Metz said. "There are also five kitchen volunteers a day with a two-hour shift." Currently, there are 130 active volunteers in the kitchen and as drivers. That doesn't include Metz or the program's cook Pam Smith; she and Metz are the only paid members of the program. "Our drivers are great. They are here through rain, snow and ice. The only time we are closed is when the schools are closed; Metz said, noting that volunteer drivers donate their time, vehicles and gas to deliver meals. 'Our kitchen volunteers are great, too. Some have been here for more than 25 years." While the program mostly serves the senior population (individuals who have just come out of the hospital and nursing homes), any homebound individual is eligible to become a client. "Some of our clients don't have family to help with food and groceries," Metz said. "And, for some, our drivers are the only person clients will see all day." In addition to receiving meals five times a week, the program also offers weekend meals. Ordering food through Renzi Food Service, Baldwinsville's Meal on Wheels prepares deliveries at Canton Woods Senior Center, where meals are made fresh daily. Lunches consist of a sandwich, pudding or jello, a baked good and a fruit; dinner is a hot entrée with a vegetable, roll and potato. "People call us up all the time and tell us how much they love our meals; Metz said. While volunteers are greatly needed at this time, the community can also help by giving to Meals on Wheels through donations, memorials and endowments. "Every little bit helps," Metz said. To become a volunteer, call 638-2171.
During the last week of 2012, President Barack Obama signed a bill (H.R. 5837) designating the postal facility at 26 East Genesee St., Baldwinsville, as the "Corporal Kyle Schneider Post Office Building" into law. "Corporal Kyle R. Schneider is an American hero and I am so pleased that President Obama signed this legislatiOn honoring him into law," said Ann Marie Buerkle, who introduced the bill while representing New York's 25th Congressional District. "Kyle is greatly missed, and while nothing can ever diminish the grief of those who knew and loved him, I hope that this small token will serve as a reminder of how appreciative his community and country are for his service and sacrifice. In his death, Kyle has earned the thanks of a grateful nation. We must never forget his sacrifice and that of his family and loved once A Baldwinsville native, Schneider joined the United States Marine Corps in 2008. In January 2011, he was assigned to 3rd Platoon and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In defense of the United States, Kyle was killed in Helmand Province Afghanistan on June 30, 2011, by an improviseriexplosive device. He was 23 years old.

G&C Foods, a Van Buren business, recently made a $10,000 donation to the Baldwinsville Community Food Pantry. "This time of year, I get to play Santa Claus," said David Lepage, president of the company, adding that G&C Foods donates 10 percent of the company's pretax income each year to local organizations like the BCFP. "I tend to look toward smaller operations in our area that don't get a lot of corporate donations." Lepage and Sara Johnson, the organizational development manager at G&C Foods, presented the BCFP Volunteer Coordinator Sally Dayger with the donation last Friday. Dayger said the generous donation will provide a year's supply of vouchers for eggs and milk to those in need. BCFP serves all residents residing within the Baldwinsville Central School District on a confidential basis and is run entirely by volunteers. "My volunteers are wonderful - they

treak halted by RFA
B'irille hockey By Phil Blackwell Since the start of the new year, the Baldwinsville ice hockey team had shown the look of a newer, more efficient and more effective model, and four consecutive victories reinforced that point. Only when it traveled to Kennedy Arena last Tuesday night did the Bees cool off, running into state Division I no. 4-ranked. Rome Free Academy, who prevailed by a score of 4-2. This was a test of resilience for RFA, too. After starting 12-0 and rising to the no. 2 spot in the state rankings, the Black Knights took its first loss of the season on Jan. 12, falling to Massena 4-3 in overtime in the finals of the Red Raiders' own tournament. . With that defeat, RFA slipped to no. 4 in the state poll as Cicero-North Syracuse, with its own 12-game win streak, claimed the top spot for the first time in the program's history. Properly motivated, and knowing how much B'ville had improved since its midseason roster changes, RFA jumped on the Bees and led 2-0 after what proved to be a pivotal first period. From that point on, B'ville would play on even terms. Garth Gray and Garrett Gray would both score goals, with Parker Ferrigan and Matt
Zandri earning assists. Each time, though, the Black Knights would answer, never trailing as it overcame Josh Pinard's 23 saves in the net. Keegan Richie, with two goals, and Tyler Williams, with three assists, paced the RFA attack After this, the Bees returned to Lysander to meet Watertown IHC Friday in its first home game in two weeks. Given that, and given that it was Senior Night, B'ville wanted to put on a good performance - and did so, easily dispatching the Cavaliers in a 6 - 0 shutout. Spending a large portion of the game in IHC's end, the Bees recorded 67 shots. Only the remarkable work of Cavaliers goalie Grant Chamberlain kept it from a more lopsided margin. B'ville got all of its goals in the first two periods, two of them from Ferrigan, including a short-handed tally as he added a pair of assists. Ronnie Bertrand and Garth Gray each had one goal and one assist, while Zandri piled up three assists. Mike Schneid and Matt Abbott earned the other goals as Pinard stopped all 18 shots he faced. The win improved B'ville to 8-6-1 (5-4-1 league), but its Division I playoff fate may hinge on two more road games this week, as the Bees

Irvine bowlers sweep West Genesee By Phil Blackwell Elizabeth Blume had a standout performance as both of Baldwinsville's bowling teams would sweep West Genesee 3 - 0 last Tuesday at Solvay Recreation Alley. Blume put up a string of strikes on her way to a 257, her best game of the season, all part of a 602 series. Annie Peterson remained steady, with a three-game total of 547 as B'ville moved to 8-1 on the season, just behind Auburn in the CNY
Counties League standings. As for the boys Bees, Kevin Dunnihoo had his one of his best series of the season, a 575, as his team improved to 5-4. Dunnihoo posted a 213 high game, just ahead of Delsean Griffith's 210, which was part of a 569 set, though both trailed WG's Justin Ingram, who had a 600 set. B'ville has matches this week against Central Square and Fayetteville-Manlius after a tournament appearance in Oswego on Monday afternoon.

BMIle wrestlers reach Dual Meet semifinals By Phil Blackwell
a 53-second phi over Isaiah Boaz before Jake Norton (152 pounds) pinned Tyler Bray in the waning seconds. Steve Petrelli, at 160 pounds, blanked Jacob Curry 3-0 as Gunnar Sutphen (170 pounds) routed Mike Duffer 11-2 and Nick Balduzzi (182 pounds) cruised past A.J. Thomas 9-1. From there, foil!. Bees - Brian Honsinger (220 pounds), Kevin Lewis (99 pounds), David Rush (106 pounds) and Kevin Paul (120 pounds) - daimed forfeits, but Joe Nasoni (195 pounds) did wrestle, and took just 55 seconds to pin Roger Cecconi. Then the Bees went after Indian River, but this would have more suspense, the meet still in doubt until Jeremy Pond (113 pounds) recorded a 38-second pin over Devin Thorton in the late going. B'ville and IR swapped the first four matches, Connor Ross (138 pounds) taking just 38 seconds to
Proving its elite status once more, the Baldwinsville wrestling team made it to the semifinal round at last Saturday's Section III Dual Meet at Cicero-North Syracuse. Starting with the no. 5 seed in a 16-team field, the Bees flattened Lowville 59-13 in the opening round and outlasted Indian River 45-38 in the quarterfinals before a 42-31 semifinal defeat to top seed South Jefferson. As it worked out, B'ville ended up facing Frontier League opposition for the entire tournament, starting with Lowville, where the Bees would win all but three of the matches against the Red Raiders. Brandon Schmid beat Bradley Curry 7-2 in the 126-pound opener as Vito Coloia (132 pounds) followed up with a 9-5 decision over Shawn Wicirick. Starting at 145 pounds, B'ville won six straight. Chad McArdell had
pin Ben Callaghan before McArdell earned a crucial victory, moving up to 152 and holding off Dylan Crowder 5-3. Norton, who moved up to 160, pinned Logan Running with just eight seconds left, but the Warriors countered with two wins of its own to take a 20-15 lead before Nasoni took a forfeit. Honsinger, in his first match of the day, took just 42 seconds to finish off DaQuan Brown, and Jake Florack wrestled at 285 pounds, pinning Alex Avery in 324 to make it 33-20. Pond's win, plus a forfeit to Paul, dosed it out. The semifinal match with South Jefferson, who was no. 7 in the latest state small-school rankings, saw B'ville get an early lead when McArdell, back at 145, pinned Jake Moulton in 1:46 and Norton follow with a 12-1 decision over Jayson Kellogg, all this after Ross lost to Jon Crast 7-3.
But the Spartans earned three straight pins to go in front 21-10 before another forfeit to Nasoni. Florack would keep the Bees within reach, needing an overtime takedown to beat Antonio Diaz 3-1. South Jefferson then made its decisive move, whining three straight matches, including decisions where Rush fell to Caleb Beach 5-0 and Pond lost to Tyler Bates 7-2. Paul would earn another victory, pinning Adam Hutchinson in 3:51 as Coloia claimed a late forfeit. As it turned out, the Bees fell to the team that finished on top. South Jefferson rolled past no. 3 seed General Brown 45719 in the championship round, the second time in three days the Spartans had beaten the Lions, having done so in a Frontier League meet on Thursday. B'ville tuned up for the Dual Meet by venturing to Central Square last Wednesday night and putting together an impressive 57-21 victory
over the Red Hawks. Despite entering the meet with a 28-2 record, Central Square could not keep up with the Bees' relentless push, which started at s26 when Schmid held off Max Emond 7-5. Two matches later, at 138, Ross pinned Mike Byrne in 1:04, putting B'ville ahead for good before Brian Rush (145) held off Nate Rogers 1410. McArdell proceeded to pin Josh Bliss in 2:50. Starting at 182, B'ville, leading 18-15, would win seven of the last eight matches. Balduzzi pinned Justin Lanning in 1:11, with Nasoni (195) taking 5:20 to finish off Eljah Sampo. Honsinger (220) and Luke Earle (285) also got pins. To start the closing rush, David Rush, at 106, pinned Chelsy Sanchagrin in 3:55. Pond needed just 1:26 to pin Dylan Wallace, and Paul got a 5-1 decision over Blake Engebretsen.

Boys hoops Bees take loss to Corcoran By Phil Blackwell A promising outlook at the start of 2013 clouded up for the Baldwinsville boys basketball team, as did its post-season chances. The Bees went to Corcoran last Friday night, and once more its defense proved ineffective, a key reason why it lost to the Cougars 84-66. Where it all went wrong was in the second quarter. B'ville took a 17-16 lead into that frame, but
Corcoran dominated the rest of the half, outscoring the Bees 21-8 and taking the lead for good. A fast-paced second half saw Tim Marshall work his total to 20 points, while Jayson Brower added 12 points. Kevin Drain struggled, though, managing just one field goal, and the likes of Ben Diorio, Mike Aiello, Zach Leo and Anthony DeMarco (seven points apiece) could not make up for it. Above anything else, though,
was the work of Corcoran's Torrence Commodore, who made baskets, drew contact, and didn't stop until he set a career mark with 35 points, including 13 field goals and nine successful free throws. Now with a 4-8 mark, the Bees return home for crucial back-tobadc games on Wednesday against Nottingham and Friday against Central Square. At least a split is needed for B'ville to remain in reasonable playoff consideration.
