The following chapter describes the terminal's components and basic information for its initial use. The following are specifically described: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Turn the fastening screw on the battery cover 90 degrees anticlockwise using the back part of the pen provided or any other suitable tool (see figure 1.1.a) Pull the battery cover using the elastic if necessary (see figure 1.1.b and 1.1.c) and levering it with the back side of the pen. Hold the terminal in a face down position (see figure 1.1.d). Insert the battery in the appropriate compartment, ensuring that the gold contacts face towards the inside of the terminal while holding the battery label upwards, and ensure the battery fits into place; if the battery is inserted incorrectly, it will not fit in it's designated compartment properly and the cover cannot be closed. Close the battery cover by firstly fitting the two inserts on the lower internal part of the cover into the appropriate guides on the casing (see figure 1.1.e), then while holding the fastening screw with the slot in a horizontal position, fit it into it's relative opening (see figure 1.1.f), and turn it 90 degrees clockwise using the back part of the pen. N.B. Proceed as described above every time the battery is to be replaced. 4 Figure. 1.1.a Figure. 1.1.d Figure. 1.1.b Figure. 1.1.e Figure. 1.1.c Figure. 1.1.f 1.1.2 Main battery charging Connect the power supply unit provided (see figure 1.1.h) to the electricity mains using the appropriate cable. Insert the Jack connector into it's appropriate socket marked by a white 'arrow' on the upper part of the lateral connector compartment (see indications in figure 1.1.i and figure 1.1.l with connector inserted). To ensure that it is charging correctly, check that the red LED, which is located on the right behind the red glass scanner protection panel (see figure 1.1m), is lit. Once it has recharged, the red LED turns off and the orange LED, which is symmetrically situated to the left in relation to the red recharge LED (see figure 1.1.m), lights up. When the USB/serial communication cable is connected to the USB interface of a PC that is running (see subsequent section 1.5), the terminal battery is charged via the PC (max. 500mA); if the terminal is turned off, all power is used to charge the battery (charge time is however much longer compared to that when using the above mentioned power supply unit provided); if the terminal is running, the system is powered via the PC and any residual energy is used to charge the battery: in this event, battery charge is maintained and this is not an actual recharge. 1.1.3 Switching on the terminal Once the battery is inserted and charged, the terminal can be started up. To do so, hold the ON/OFF button pressed for at least 8 seconds until the red LED on the left of the terminal head does not light up (see figure 1.1.n); consequently, release the ON/OFF button: the so-called boot-strap procedure will start and the LED turns orange during boot loader execution, after which the actual operating system starts up, the display lights up, the 'Nylux' logo appears and the orange LED simultaneously turns off; after a few seconds the start up procedure is completed. 1.1.4 Reset and turning off the terminal Press and hold the ON/OFF button down to turn the terminal off. The display darkens after approximately 4 seconds and the LED on the terminal head turns red: this indicates that the device is resetting: If at this point the ON/OFF button is released, the terminal will again perform the entire start-up sequence as above described; on the other hand, by continuing to hold down the ON/OFF button until the red LED turns off, the terminal will close down entirely. LED sw itch-on status Figure 1.1.n 1.2 Description of the keyboard and it’s use The Nylux keyboard is altogether composed of 30 keys, many of which are multifunctional: this means that each physical key can mean different things depending on the mode of the keyboard. The keyboard is specifically composed as follows: • • • • • • • • 13 alphanumeric keys 3 function keys to remap the meaning of each multifunction key 4 cursor keys 6 mono-function keys: 'ESC', Backspace, 'ENTER', 'Ctrl', 'Alt' and 'TAB' 1 key to manage display backlighting 1 ‘SCAN’ key 1 info key 1 ON/OFF – reset key (see section 1.1.4). 6 Once the battery cover has been removed (see figure 1.4.a and 1.4.b), insert the SD card with its gold contacts facing downwards (see figure 1.4.c) into the relative slot located between the battery and the keyboard finally, push carefully the card into the terminal using a finger (see figure 1.4.d) until the locking spring clicks, then close the battery cover (see figure 1.4.e and 1.4.f). Refer to the relative Appendix B for instructions on formatting the SD card. Figure. 1.4.a Figure. 1.4.d Figure. 1.4.b Figure. 1.4.e Figure. 1.4.c Figure. 1.4.f 1.5 USB/serial communication cable connecting the terminal and PC The terminal is equipped with a communication cable (see figure 1.5.a), which serves for the transfer of data from/to a PC via the RS232-C serial interface or USB. Connect the single end part (rectangular ‘male’ micro-connector) of the cable to the ‘female’ data connector situated in the centre of the connector compartment and on the left side of the terminal (see figure 1.5.e and 1.5.c); connect the other end to a standard serial connector RS232 and/or USB of a PC. Data can be exchanged to and from the PC using appropriate programs. As previously explained in section ‘1.1.2 Recharging’, when the cable is connected to the USB interface of a running computer, the terminal battery is recharged via the PC (max 500mA). If the terminal is on, the system is powered by the PC, thus maintaining battery charge. Data connector 10 2 Using Nylux 2.1 Starting Nylux As previously explained in section 1.1.3, press and hold down the ON/OFF button until the red LED on the left above the terminal display lights up. At the start-up of Nylux, a splash screen appears showing the different boot phases (Kernel Start-up, Server X and Windows Manager). Nylux Boot : splash screen during the Windows Once terminated the boot procedure, which lasts approximately one minute with standard configuration, Desktop and Status Bar appear. Nylux Desktop and Status Bar 11 desktop: utilities desktop: settings 12 Click the button on Menu Launcher to: ● ● ● Access Desktop Access and launch configuration programs Access and launch utility programs 13 Menu Utilities Using the Menu Launcher button, click on Utilities to access and launch utility programs. The programs made available by Nylux are show n in the Utilities Menu and can be launched by clicking on the relative icon. Menu Settings Using the Menu Launcher button, click on Settings to access and launch Nylux configuration programs. The programs made available by Nylux are show n in the Settings Menu and can be launched by clicking on the relative icon. Keyboard Input Click the “Keyboard Input” icon in the Status Bar to visualize/hide the virtual keyboard. Use of the virtual keyboard enables to write information in the currently active programs. The virtual keyboard provided by Nylux has three different layout modes: alpha numeric and function. The different layout modes are easily visible by clicking on the keys keyboard and to visualize the alphabet keyboard, to visualize the function keyboard. to visualize the numeric Keyboard: Alphabetic layout Keyboard : Numeric layout Keyboard : Function layout 14 System: information related to the Kernel version installed Hardware : information related to hardware resources 15 Battery : information related to battery charge status Storage : information related to used and free system memory System : information related to network interfaces status 16 17 To set the System date, click on the icon related to the Calendar and use the arrows to move to the required month/year. Once selected, click on the required day as shown in the figure below. To set System time, click on the arrows related to hours/minutes and select the required value. An additional option enables to set the System clock directly through the network if Nylux is connected to it. Before carrying out this operation, ensure that the correct time zone (Time zone) has been set. 18 Note: Click on the clock icon and perform a complete rotation around the visualized clock to change to the 12-24 hour range. 19 In the Theme tab, the theme can be changed by choosing the one required from the list. It is also possible to regulate the size of icons on Desktop choosing pixel sizes from 16 to 64. Finally, if supported by the theme, it is possible to activate visual effects by selecting the check-box under Visual Effects. Background The default settings for the previously selected theme can be changed in the Background tab. Unable the check-box relative to Theme Default to disable such settings. Functions: 1. 2. 1. 2. Solid Colour-Select a solid colour to achieve a uniform background. Click the relative Colour button to change colour and select the one required. Colour Gradient-Select a colour gradient to fill in the background with a colour shade. This shade will go from the solid colour selected with the Solid Colour button, to the gradient value selected. Click the relative Colour buttons to change and select the colours required. It is also possible to choose the gradient direction: Horizontal : from left to right Vertical : from above to below Finally, it is possible to choose a background image by selecting Image and using the relative Open button to identify the complete path of the image file to be viewed. The image can be positioned in the background centrally (Center), can tile the background (Tile) or can be stretched to completely fill the background (Stretch). Toolbars 20 In the Toolbars tab, it is possible to configure and choose the appearance of icons in the toolbar. 1. Icons-Only show icons in the toolbar 3. Both-Show icons and text in the toolbar 2. Text-Only show text in the toolbar Drag the slide bar related to icon size to set the required dimension. Fonts The relative font for applications and the Desktop can be chosen in the Fonts tab. Click on the relative Font button (Desktop or Application) and select the required font. It is also possible to change font size by using the arrows, and to change font colour by clicking on the Colour button. Terminal Once the interface has been created or selected, it is possible to configure the network interface for the type of use mode:    static : statically configure the IP address, Netmask, Broadcast and Gateway dhcp : obtain IP configuration via DHCP ppp : insert the provider to use the interface as a point-to-point device If a Wifi type interface has been selected, it is necessary to click the Configure button in order to set the parameters for wireless connection. In particular, specify the name of the wireless network to be used for connection by inserting the ESSID. Also select “managed” (infrastructure) or “ad hoc” for the type of connection mode. Optionally, the frequency for “ad hoc” connection can be specified by indicating the right channel. 22 Finally, specify the type of encryption used for wireless connection; if “WEP” or “WPA/WPA2 Personal” is used, introduce the relative key. 23 Functions : ● ● ● Light - Configure display brightness – is not currently supported. Display - Click Rotation in the combo box to configure screen rotation in the required mode (i.e., Portrait, Landscape). The following procedure for formatting the memory card must be carried out if this is the first time the card is used. Firstly, the memory card must be partitioned after starting up a Nylux console (example made using a 1GB SD card) To partition proceed as follows: ● ● ● ● start fdisk on the device: fdisk /dev/mmca1 with the ‘p’ command visualize the table of partitions add a new primary partition using the ‘n’ command (indicate ‘1’ as the partition number and confirm the other parameters to default values) finally, before proceeding to write with the ‘w’ command, use the ‘p’ command to check the table of partitions: if the partition has been created correctly, the new table of partitions will look like this: Disk /dev/mmca1: 1015 MB, 1015808000 bytes 32 heads, 63 sectors/track, 984 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2016 * 512 = 1032192 bytes Device Boot /dev/mmca1 Start 1 End 984 Blocks Id System 991840+ 83 Linux Once the partition has been created, it needs to be formatted; In the same console in which it was created, proceed with the following commands: To format the partition use the following command: # mke2fs /dev/mmca1 The display output achieved from the operation will be as follows: mke2fs 1.40.2 (12-Jul-2007) Filesystem label= OS type: Linux Block size=4096 (log=2) Fragment size=4096 (log=2) 124160 inodes, 247960 blocks 12398 blocks (5.00%) reserved for the super user First data block=0 Maximum filesystem blocks=255852544 8 block groups 32768 blocks per group, 32768 fragments per group 15520 inodes per group Superblock backups stored on blocks: 32768, 98304, 163840, 229376 Writing inode tables: done Writing superblocks and filesystem accounting information: done This filesystem will be automatically checked every 27 mounts or 180 days, whichever comes first. Use tune2fs -c or -i to override. Finally, to start using the memory card it must be installed in the filesystem. To install the partition: # mount /dev/mmca1 /mnt/mmc 26 If the mount is successful, no errors messages will appear. To verify that the operation was correct: # mount | grep mmc The result will be as follows: /dev/mmca1 on /mnt/mmc type ext2 (rw) The memory card has now been mounted on the filesystem and is ready for use. In order to achieve automatic memory card installation at start-up the relative line has to be modified to /etc/ fstab APPENDIX C Laser reader The terminal is equipped with a laser reader to read and decode barcodes and is located on the terminal head, behind the relative red glass panel (see figure C.1). Point the laser output window towards the barcode. Press the ‘SCAN’ button; check that the red laser beam exits from the relative scanner window, being careful not to focus it as described in the safety notes in Appendix E, and ensure that it covers the entire length of the label to be read (see figure ‘Laser Scanning’). Correct w rong Laser scanning N.B. The optimum reading distance depends on the type of barcode, and consequently, the density and size of the code itself and the code print quality. In the diagram below, according to the various types of barcodes, code decoding distances are shown depending on the width of the barcode lines and laser beam distance. 27 Standard performance at 23°C with high-quality coding LED and BUZZER reading The bi-colour red/green LED situated in the upper left part of the terminal (see figure 1 page 3), indicates scanning status: when the 'SCAN' key is pressed the LED lights up red; once the barcode has been read and correctly coded, the LED turns green and the Buzzer sends out a sound signal. See table below. Off Stable red Stable green Stato del LED Scanning off Descrizione Scannning on Decoding correctly carried out 28 Laser reader configuration The Scanwedge application carries out laser configuration and enables operation of the laser reader by redirecting the read codes to the active window. The application that implements Scanwedge to operate is called ‘scand daemon’: this application must be started by a script wrapper (/sbin/scanwedge) that provides the settings for several environment variables and starts up scand with the appropriate parameters. Note: To disable the automatic start-up of Scanwedge edit the relative line within the file /root/.xinitrc. Configuration parameters The Scanwedge configuration file is /etc/scand.conf: The different codings supported by the reader engine can be enabled or disabled. Each line preceded by the symbol ‘#' is a comment. All possible start-up switches for scand are summarized below: -l, --log: Enable syslogging (default: disabled) -t, --timeout : Set read timeout to [1000,5000] (default: 1500) -s, --suffix : Set suffix to (Ex: 0x0d0x0a) -b, --begin : Report code starting from (default=0) -e, --end : Report code stopping at (default=code_length-1) -r, --replace =: Replace char C1 with C2 (Ex: 0x1d=0x5a) 29 APPENDIX D Guidelines for correct battery use • • • • • • • • The terminal recharge area must be kept free from inflammable or chemical materials and particles. Special care must be taken when the terminal is charged in an noncommercial environment. Do not use non-original batteries and/or power supply units and battery chargers. Please contact customer services at Bancolini for any enquires regarding the compatibility of batteries, battery chargers and power supply units. Do not crush, puncture or apply excessive pressure on the battery. Violent impacts due to battery-powered devices falling on hard surfaces can cause the actual battery to overheat. Do not leave or store the device in or near areas that can reach high temperatures, such as inside parked cars or next to a radiator or any other source of heat. Do not put the battery in ovens or driers. Do not throw the battery in a fire If you think your device or battery is damaged, call Bancolini customer services to organize a general inspection. APPENDIX E Safety provisions for class II laser use Protective Housing Statements CAUTION - CLASS 2 LASER LIGHT WHEN OPEN, DO NOT STARE INTO THE BEAM. ATTENTION – LUMIERE LASER EN CAS D'OUVERTURE. Required Location For most end products, this text should be located on the exterior of the product, or inside the battery compartment, software module compartment or other user accessible area. Access to these areas must not require special tools. Refer to the current applicable laser safety standards for the end product for specific requirements for the end product. Font Use a sans serif type font such as Arial or equivalent. The height must be at least 0.032 in. minimum. Color No color requirement. Contrast must be hight enough to render this text legible. Laser Safety Statement The Symbol SE950 and SE955 scan engines offer integrators a significant advantage in both reduced time to market and simplified regulatory testing and approvals. The engines contain a full suite of host independent fault protection mechanisms and have been proven to stay within classification during operation and single fault conditions as required by EN/IEC 60950.* Because this testing was performed by an independent accredited laboratory, integrators placing the engine in most ITE ( Information Technology Equipment) products should not need to undergo the significant single-point failure testing that would normally be required for laser safety compliance (certain types of products aimed at medical, military, or other specialty markets may require additional testing). Additionally, the scan engines do not require any beam attenuation (via scanning window attenuation, distance-based attenuation, or other electronic controls) to meet their laser power classification, provided that the product's laser classification matches the engine. Motorola will also provide you with the documentation you need to speed through your regulatory approvals. We will provide: • Initial EN/IEC 60825-1 certificates showing classification and restrictions to aid development efforts 30 (restrictions include labeling and other product level restrictions that are impossible to implement on the component engine itself)*. • FDA accession number • EN/IEC 60950-1 Certificates • Proof of UL 60950-1 Recognition • Motorola will provide copies of the EN/IEC 60825-1 laser safety test reports to your laser/product safety test laboratory upon receipt of a standard NDA agreement signed by both the lab and Symbol. • Upon request, Motorola will also provide copies of the UL Recognition report and/or the European and CB Scheme EN/IEC 60950-1 report to your laser/product safety test laboratory upon receipt of a standard NDA agreement signed by both the lab and Symbol. Not that some specialty markets such as medical, military, or other specialty markets may have more specialized regulatory controls, and may require additional tests to be performed. • The Class 2 SE950 has one usage restriction: in order to maintain classification, the AIM mode input from the host cannot be active for more than 5 seconds at a time. Disclaimer • • The integrator is responsible to ensure they meet any and all applicable regulatory requirements for their product after integration of the scan engine. For example, if the integrator's equipment is a medical device, the all the regulatory requirements for a medical device are applicable. Laser class certification for the end product is the integrator's responsibility. The integrator, per the IEC and FDA regulations is responsible for selecting the laser class and demonstrating that the final product is in compliance with the FDA and/or IEC standards. The 95X series of scan engines have the necessary safety circuits on board to stay in class (as required by the FDA and IEC standards) during operation, maintenance, and foreseeable fault conditions, but product labeling and application specific requirements must be met by the integrator. Recycling The customer shall be responsible for complying with all recycling laws and regulations, including European Directive: Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Motorola shall have no responsibility for collecting the products sold to Customer. Esclusione di responsabilità per danni conseguenti In nessun caso Bancolini Symbol o chiunque abbia preso parte allo sviluppo, realizzazione o consegna del prodotto (sia hardware che software) potrà essere ritenuto responsabile per eventuali danni di qualsiasi genere (compresi in forma esemplificativa ma non esaustiva, danni derivanti da interruzione di attività, perdite di profitto, di informazioni commerciali, od altre perdite di denaro), derivanti dall’uso, dall’uso dei suoi risultati o dall’errato uso del prodotto, anche se si e’ preventivamente notificata ad Bancolini Symbol la possibilità di detti danni. Disimballaggio e notifica dei danni Conservare l’involucro ed il materiale di imballo dell’unità nel caso se ne rendesse necessaria la spedizione. Verificare che il terminale non abbia subito danni durante il trasporto; nel caso procedere immediatamente alla notifica ed alla sottoscrizione della relativa richiesta di risarcimento presso l’azienda del vettore. Bancolini Symbol non può essere ritenuta responsabile per danneggiamenti procurati all’attrezzatura durante il trasporto e non ne riconosce quindi la riparazione in garanzia.
