There are technical and legal issues with NMEA standards TECHNICAL • NMEA 0183 is based on slow serial communications with 1 talker and multiple listeners – limited to 4800 baud or 38400 baud on AIS systems • NMEA 2000 is based on CanBus which operates at 250KBs and has a maximum of 50 devices connected onto a bus but allows for multiple transmissions on the bus • In todays connected world, these standards are fine for simple sensor sharing but don’t have the bandwidth or connectivity for the demands of modern consumers LEGAL • NMEA devices require certification which can be daunting and expensive for smaller developers and this stifles innovation and application development BUT… • There are many NMEA 0183 and NMEA 2000 devices in the field already and it remains the most common method of networking sensors and systems So what’s needed….
