Only the highly evolved have five. 5 million pixels meet 5 million years of evolution. Five is the optimum number - you’re living proof of that. And the world of digital photography is no exception. Canon’s most advanced compact digital camera is the PowerShot G5. M ATC H L ES S T EC H N O LO G Y With a host of advanced features providing the flexibility you need, making images with impact becomes instinctive with the PowerShot G5. A 4x optical zoom gets you in close, while a powerful 5.0 Megapixel CCD sensor captures every nuance of every shot. Unique iSAPS technology optimises shooting settings, Canon’s exclusive DIGIC chip processes images quickly, and Image Rendering technology always makes sure the colour of every shot is captured and reproduced faithfully. The Intervalometer function for time-lapse photography, and Focus Bracketing, ensuring you get the perfect shot when shooting close up, are some other examples of how the PowerShot G5 extends your creative reach. G R EAT E R S CO P E The PowerShot G5 also has a wide selection of accessories to pick from, including numerous lenses and Speedlites. What’s more, with the latest image software, your shots can be manipulated and stored on your computer; but you won’t need a PC when it’s time to print, thanks to Canon Direct Print. DISCERNING DESIGN On the surface too, there isn’t a single aspect of the PowerShot G5 that isn’t considered - from the controls, intelligently placed for ease-of-use, to the vary-angle LCD monitor, manoeuvrable to free you from shooting constraints. When you hold a PowerShot G5 you will soon discover that five is a handy number to have. C R EAT I V E F L EX I B I L I TY With a wealth of shooting modes to choose between, from Manual to Auto mode, you have as much control or freedom as you need. FlexiZone AF/AE also gives you the freedom to select the focus point within a scene. The vary-angle LCD monitor can be twisted and turned in all directions, including flush against the camera body to protect its screen. All elements working in perfect harmony. What makes the PowerShot G5 such an outstanding performer? The answer lies in the advanced Canon technology that drives it. Every element of its digital imaging technology works together to deliver superb photographic results. HIGH RESOLUTION CANON 4x OPTI- HIGH DEFINITION 5.0 MEGAPIXEL CAL ZOOM LENS CCD SENSOR As any photographer knows, the calibre of the lens is critical to the quality of the final image. Over sixty years of experience in optical engineering and countless patents on zoom lenses has made Canon a leader in this field. All that expertise can be seen through the lens of the PowerShot G5. The 5.0 Megapixel CCD on the PowerShot G5 provides an exact reading of every shooting situation to enable you to capture superb details. So even when printing up to A3 in size, you have enough resolution to impress. Compatibility with Type II storage media gives you the room you need to try out all your ideas. Aspherical Lenses Spherical aberration of spherical lens Camera settings: * Exposure Mode: Program AE * Shutter Speed: 1/1000 sec. * Aperture Value: f:4.0 * Focal Length: 7.2mm + WC-DC58N Wide Converter Convergence of parallel light rays by an aspherical lens Camera settings: * Exposure Mode: Auto * Shutter Speed: 1/500 sec. * Aperture Value: f:4.0 * Focal Length: 7.2mm The precision engineered 4x optical zoom lens (35-140mm equivalent in 35mm format) is expertly constructed of 8 elements, incorporating 2 aspherical elements. This dramatically reduces the image aberrations that can often be seen with non-aspherical lenses. Plus, a fast f /2.0 - f /3.0 aperture, which gives better results in low light (allowing for a higher shutter speed and a lower ISO speed equivalent to be used), means this lens will not disappoint. Camera settings: * Exposure Mode: Auto * Shutter Speed: 1/160 sec. * Aperture Value: f:4.0 * Focal Length: 28.8mm +TC-DC58N Tele Converter The DIGIC digital signal processor - a small yet vital part of the Powershot G5. HIGH SPEED PROCESSOR What are the functions of a Digital Image Processor? Integral to the elements of image quality in any digital camera is image processing. Ensuring the images from the PowerShot G5 are always of the highest standard is Canon’s exclusive DIGIC (DIGital Imaging Core) Processor. This digital imaging chip (specifically designed for use in Canon digital cameras) works at consistently high speeds to allow for highly complex algorithms relating to each shot to be executed in a shorter space of time. As a result, you get superb picture quality, faster and more accurate AF performance, a respectable 2 frames per second continuous shooting speed and more responsive camera controls. The efficient design of the DIGIC processor also provides the added benefit of extended battery life, letting you shoot for longer on a single battery charge. Signal Processing JPEG Compression and Decompression Imaging Control Digital Image Processor Memory Card Control AF, AE and AWS Display Neumann type processor versus Canon Processing of one pixel processor Next pixel All purpose Neumann-type processor Processing of one pixel Next pixel SUPER FAST PROCESSING processor Adaptive intelligence. The instant you press the shutter, Canon's unique colour rendering and iSAPS technology assesses the scene to ensure you achieve optimum results. Canon’s Photographic Space COLOUR RENDERING Canon Image Rendering technology aims not only to capture a scene, but to recreate the atmosphere of that scene, and to convey the emotional intent of the picture you take. Colours appear as you remember, are more attractive to the eye and emulate your memories when you pressed the shutter. High Frequency High Frequency Bright Low Frequency Low Luminance Near The Image Rendering technology incorporated into the PowerShot G5 uses proprietary algorithms based on an extensive database of accumulated imaging data. Captured colour data is converted to standard colour spaces, so that images ultimately viewed on a monitor or printed appear as they would in your mind’s eye. Therefore, skin tones stay natural, reds remain bold, greens are vibrant, and blue skies are crystal clear. Colour Reproduction based on memory colours Distance Dark Far iSAPS TECHNOLOGY Canon has compiled a vast statistical database of different types of images and the settings used for each one. By evaluating these images a statistical relationship was established among, for example, focal length, focus distance scene brightness, plus other factors. iSAPS (intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) applies this statistical analysis to dramatically improve the camera’s ability to interpret shooting situations. Lemon Green Apple Skin Blue sky Knowing the frequency of the different combination of shooting factors, the iSAPS technology can optimise AutoFocus, AutoExposure, and Auto White Balance settings for any given scene more rapidly and effectively, giving you bold images without delay. Natural selection. The PowerShot G5 is equipped with an SLR-style Mode Dial, which makes it easy to take photographs in a wide range of shooting situations by providing 12 intelligent modes with optimised settings, including a full Manual mode. CUSTOM MODES The PowerShot G5 has 2 Custom mode settings, so you can select your preferred combination of photographic parameters and save them in these preset slots. When a custom mode is chosen, the camera instantly resets to all your saved parameters. This allows for a quick set-up time, meaning you’re less likely to miss those once in a lifetime shots. MANUAL For more challenging photographic conditions, or when you want complete creative control, switch to Manual mode. In this mode you can set both the aperture and shutter speed manually, and select the ▼ appropriate focus. APERTURE PRIORITY You’re in control of depth-of-field in this mode, as you set the aperture. The camera automatically sets the appropriate shutter speed for perfect exposure. ▼ SHUTTER SPEED PRIORITY This allows you to select the shutter speed, whilst the camera selects the most appropriate aperture for the available light. The mode lets you freeze a moving subject or blur with slower speeds to create a flowing effect. It also means you can shoot without a flash in low light areas. ▼ PROGRAM AE The camera sets the aperture and the shutter speed combination based on the shooting conditions. You set all other parameters, such as flash mode, exposure compensation and white balance. ▼ AUTO All the parameters are set by the camera, based on the shooting conditions, so you can just point and shoot. PORTRAIT The camera chooses a larger aperture for reduced depth-of-field, ensuring the distracting background is blurred and the ▼ subject is perfectly in focus. ▼ LANDSCAPE For increased depth-of-field to ensure both foreground and background are in sharp focus, the camera opts for a smaller aperture, so no details are lost. NIGHT SCENE This mode is ideal for shooting a subject against the backdrop of an evening sky or at night. Your subject is illuminated with fill-in flash, whilst a slower shutter speed is used to capture the backdrop details, so the subject and the background are correctly exposed. ▼ MOVIE MODE Record up to 3 minutes of footage with sound in this mode. At 15 frames per second, clips are smooth and flicker-free. You can playback and edit the movie in camera if you want to remove unwanted sections. STITCH ASSIST This mode helps you take images that can be merged (stitched) into a larger image using the supplied PhotoStitch software. Align a sequence of up to 26 images accurately and easily (e.g. horizontally, vertically, or tiled) to create panoramas, larger images or even poster size images with superb detail. ▼ Impressive dexterity. RAW MODE When shooting in RAW Mode, maximum image data can be recorded with loss-less (reversible) compression and therefore suffer no reduction in definition. Then when you download the image to your computer you can manipulate and edit as you like. You can save an image as a RAW file even when shooting in JPEG. Macro shot set-up: * Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority * Shutter Speed: 1/60 sec. * Aperture Value: f :8.0 * Focal Length: 28.8mm + 250D Close-Up lens * Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX * Speedlite 550EX Macro shots can be taken as close as 5cm to the subject. N E U T R A L D E N S I T Y F I LT E R This ND filter function cuts the amount of light reaching the sensor by three stops without affecting the colour balance. This is especially useful in very bright conditions where the subject requires a slow shutter speed or large aperture, or when using a flash for Macro photography. FLEXIZONE AF/AE FlexiZone AF/AE lets you freely scroll the auto focus area around the scene to select your focus point. The exposure will automatically be weighted for your subject within the selected area. For more specific metering, choose spot metering in combination to apply the exposure for the selected area to your image. If your subject is off-centre you can use FlexiZone AF/AE to scroll your auto focus point and choose the subject area to be in focus. The Intervalometer - perfect for capturing a sequence of events over time. Camera settings: * Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority * Shutter Speed: 1/8 sec. * Aperture Value: f:5.6 * Focal Length: 7.2mm + 250D Close-Up lens * AF Range Mode: Macro * 24 hours later * Shutter Speed: 1/5 sec. AUTO EXPOSURE BRACKETING I N T E R VA L O M E T E R AND FOCUS BRACKETING This feature is designed for time-lapse photography. The Intervalometer function automatically captures up to 100 shots at intervals between 1 and 60 minutes. This is perfect for capturing changes over time, such as an image sequence of an opening flower bud, or for use in scientific experiments. There are two bracketing modes available – Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) and Focus Bracketing. AEB settings can be adjusted in 1/3EV steps within the range of –2EV to +2EV. With a single shutter release three successive shots are obtained: one at the standard metered reading, one underexposed and one overexposed. * 48 hours later * Shutter Speed: 1/6 sec. I N T E L L I G E N T O R I E N TA T I O N S E N S O R Focus Bracketing also takes three successive shots, shifting the selected AF point to be behind the subject and then to be in front. It is also possible to define the range of deviation from the specified focal point easily within the menu. This feature is especially useful for Macro photography, where focusing is critical. A tiny sensor has been incorporated into the PowerShot G5 that detects the orientation of the camera, whether it is portrait or landscape. As a result, you get more accurate AE and AWB in the vertical position since the camera allows for brighter sky at the top of the image. Also, when downloading to a PC the orientation of the shot is automatically detected and shown the way it was intended. The Intelligent Orientation Sensor knows when you are shooting in portrait and makes adjustments to AF, AE and AWB to get the perfect shot. Faultless reproduction. CANON DIRECT PRINT With the PowerShot G5, simple and quick direct printing is possible, thanks to Canon’s dedicated Card Photo Printers (CP-200 and CP-300) and compatible Bubble Jet Printers. POST SHOOTING POSSIBILITIES The possibilities don’t end after you press the shutter. They’ve just begun. You can manage and further manipulate a shot on your PC or your Mac with the extensive software supplied with the camera. There’s ZoomBrowzer EX (Windows) & ImageBrowser (Macintosh) to store, print and transfer your images between camera and computer. There’s the File Viewer Utility for fast transfer, preview and conversion of RAW image files. Also included are Canon's PhotoStitch, RemoteCapture and PhotoRecord software. For those who like to add a little more imagination to their images ArcSoft Photo and Video editing software is supplied. When you are happy with your final creative shots, Canon have a number of Bubble Jet Printers available that give stunning photo quality images and even offer up to A3 size printing on some models.
