The power cable is coded as follows: Brown wire Blue wire Green/yellow wire L N E Live or Power Neutral Earth or Ground Danger : exercise extreme caution when using the machine with wet hands. Dry hands before operating machine. Portable Appliance Tests (PAT) All ELE designed products are tested for electrical safety prior to sale. An electrical safety PAT label is fitted to the rear of the mixer. Should no label be found, please contact ELE Service Department quoting the serial number of the equipment. Organisations have an obligation to ensure equipment is maintained and is safe for use. Regular PAT testing is one means of ensuring equipment continues to be electrically safe. Important: do not connect PAT leads to sensitive components such as PCBs, control switches and the like. DO NOT FLASH TEST ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. If in doubt as to the most suitable connection point (which will usually be an earth stud or an external earth connection) contact ELE Service Department for assistance. 6 Controls, Features and Functions 6.1 General (Refer to figure 1) (1) Mixing head : utilises planetary gearing and transmits the drive from the motor to the mixing paddle. (2) Mixing paddle : screws onto the output spindle of the mixing head (Fig.3). (3) Mixing bowl : the flange has a notch which fits over a location spigot to ensure that the bowl is always fitted in the correct position and also prevents rotation of the bowl. (4) Bowl clamp : incorporates a spring loaded mechanism that holds the bowl in the correct working position. (5) Bowl clamp/release handle : used to operate the bowl clamp. NOTE! As a safety feature the mixer will not start unless the bowl is in its correct working position. (6) Upper locating lugs : these position the bowl centrally to the mixing head. Care is required to make sure the bowl is correctly located within the lugs before the locking handle is fully engaged. (7) Location spigot : provides initial support to the bowl prior to clamping, in addition to the functions described in the mixing bowl section (3). (8) Output socket : this is for connection to the automatic sand dispenser. (9) Audible warning device (inside mixer, not shown in figure 1) : this gives an audible warning during the stop intervals in the pre-set programs. 9 9901X0260 Issue 1 Automatic/Manual Mortar Mixer 39-0035 (10) Automatic Sand Dispenser : this is optional and feeds sand at the right time to the mixing bowl on command from the program. 6.2 6.3 Front panel (Refer to figure 2) (1) Option selection switch : for selecting the required mixing function. (2) Start/Stop Button : used to start and stop any of the mixer operations. (3) Power switch : for turning the machine on or off. Illuminates when the machine is turned on. (This switch also acts as a fuse device that can be reset by turning on again after tripping. If the switch keeps tripping out then contact ELE Service Department for assistance.) (4) Motor Status Light : This light will illuminate continuously when the motor is running. This light also flashes slowly when the mixer has stopped within a program cycle for bowl cleaning. The light will start to flash faster 10 seconds before the mixer program continues. (5) Sand Dispenser Status light : This light will illuminate when the sand dispenser is open during the Program 1 mixing cycle only. Mixing head (Refer to figure 3) (1) Planetary hub : rotates on the main drive shaft inside the planetary gear which drives the mixing paddle. (2) Mixing paddle shaft : provides the drive for the mixing paddle. (3) Spacer : these are added as necessary to give the required clearance between the mixing paddle and the bowl. (4) Locking ring : secures the spacers in position and provides a seating for the mixing paddle. (5) Mixing paddle : screws onto the mixing paddle shaft. Turn anticlockwise to remove. 7 Operation 7.1 Interruptions to the mixing programs The mixing programs will be terminated for any of the following reasons: 1 If the bowl is removed. 2 If the operator is late replacing the bowl after cleaning when the mixing head is about to restart (automatic modes). 3 Switching from any of the two automatic options while the mixer is running. A pre-set mixing program will always start at the beginning of its mixing cycle, even if restarted after a forced interruption. Note: During the pre-set mixing program there is a period when the mixing head is stationary. The bowl clamp can be lowered during this period without interrupting the mixing program, providing it is back in position before the mixing head is due to restart. The audible warning device and motor status indicator will beep and flash slowly during the stationary period and then beep and flash faster 10 seconds before the mixing head is due to restart. 7.2 Removing the mixing bowl Whilst supporting the mixing bowl by its handle with the left hand, lower the bowl clamp by pulling the bowl clamp/release handle downwards. 10 9901X0260 Issue 1 Automatic/Manual Mortar Mixer 39-0035 Lower the front of the bowl until the flange clears the side location lugs then withdraw the bowl away from the rear location lug (with the locating spigot). According to how much material is in the bowl, it may help to support the bowl with the right hand before extracting it from the location lugs. 7.3 Attaching the mixing bowl Always ensure that the handle of the mixing bowl is at the front of the machine. Whilst holding the bowl handle in the left hand and, if necessary, supporting the underside of the bowl with the right hand, insert the bowl into the location lug at the rear, ensuring that the locating spigot is engaged in the notch in the bowl flange. Lift the front of the bowl until the flange is inserted within the two front location lugs and then clamp into position by pushing the bowl clamp/release handle upwards until the bowl is locked into position. 7.4 Removing and attaching the mixing paddle With the POWER switch turned to O (OFF), the bowl removed and the bowl clamp lowered, the mixing paddle unscrews from its shaft by turning it in an anticlockwise direction. Attaching the paddle is a reverse of the above procedure. 7.5 Mixing process 7.5.1 Automatic mode mixing Turn the machine on with the POWER switch on the front panel. Select one of two automatic options available: (a) Mortar mixing to EN196 - 1 : 2005 (b) Cement paste mixing to EN196 - 3 : 2005 Press the start button to start the automatic mode selected. The machine will commence mixing to the required mixing program with the motor status indicator on continuously. The sand dispenser, if fitted, will automatically allow the sand into the bowl at the correct time (for mortar mixing only EN196 - 1 : 2005). Note: When the mixing head is at rest during the mixing program, the motor status light will flash intermittently at approximately a two second cycle and also the audible warning device will emit a pulsed sound. Ten seconds before the mixing head is due to restart, the motor status indicator and the audible warning device will increase to a faster rate up to the restart of the mixing program. 7.5.2 Manual mode mixing Turn the machine on with the POWER switch. Select one of the two manual speed options available, slow (1) or fast (2). Press the start button to start the manual mixing process - the motor status indicator will illuminate continuously. 7.5.3 The ‘Nudge’ option Select the nudge option. In this mode the mixing head will rotate at approximately 10 rpm whenever the START button is pressed and will stop revolving when the switch is released. This mode is used when checking the clearance between the mixing paddle and the bowl by inching the paddle into the correct position for measurement. 11 9901X0260 Issue 1 Automatic/Manual Mortar Mixer 39-0035 8 Adjusting the Mixing Paddle Clearance (Refer to figure 3) The clearance between the mixing paddle and the bowl may need adjusting after a period of extensive use. DANGER : Great care must be taken during this process. It is recommended that only a qualified person who is totally familiar with the process should be tasked with this procedure. It is essential that the mixing paddle shaft (2) is prevented from rotating when unscrewing or re-tightening the locking ring (4) or undue stresses will be imposed on the drive mechanism. Both the mixing paddle shaft and the locking ring have machined flats to accommodate a 22 mm spanner for this purpose. Using the slot openings in the guard to see the paddle position, use the nudge option described in section 7.5.3 of these instructions to move the mixing paddle to a position where the blade edge of the paddle is in its nearest position to the bowl side. Danger : Isolate the mixer from the mains electricity before any work commences. Now remove the guard assembly by first removing the sand dispenser, if fitted, and then loosen the two lower front panel screws and the front top cover screw on the right hand side. The guard can now be lowered and the micro switch unplugged from the socket. Assembly is a reversal of the procedure. Now measure the gap between the beater edge and the bowl side. If the gap is outside required standards then unscrew the locking ring (4). Add or remove the spacer (3) as required. Refit and re-tighten the locking ring (4). Refit the mixing paddle and guard assembly making sure the guard is correctly located and the screws are secure. 9 Maintenance Clean the mixing paddle and bowl as soon as possible after mixing to prevent a buildup of hardened mix material on these components. No other maintenance should be required. 9.1 Machines with sand dispenser fitted It is possible that a build-up of light sand dust may occur within the case of the sand dispenser unit. The quantity will be dependent upon usage. It is recommended that the dispenser be periodically inspected and, if necessary, stripped and any dust removed. Please contact either the ELE Service Department or an authorised distributor for details of available spare parts or servicing requirements. 12 9901X0260 Issue 1 DIRECTIVE ON WASTE ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT (WEEE)
