It is important to understand these instructions and to acquaint yourself with the machine, its correct usage and all safety requirements. • Keep this manual in a safe place so that the information is avail -able at all times. • If you give the equipment to any other person, give them these operating instructions as well. We accept no liability for damage or accidents which result from non-compliance with these instructions. WARNING Be extra careful when using mains-powered appliances. Basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and personal injury. • Before use, check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or ageing. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY. Do not use the appliance if the cord is damaged or worn. • Read the instructions carefully. Be familiar with the controls and proper use of the equipment. • Keep the extension cord away from the cutting elements. • Wear eye protection. • Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the trimmer. • Avoid using the trimmer if by-standers, especially children or pets, are nearby. • Use the trimmer only in daylight or good artificial light. • Never operate the trimmer with damaged guards or shields or without guards or shields in place. 3 GENERAL SAFETY RULES • Switch on the motor only when yours hands and feet are a safe distance from the cutting means. • Never fit metal cutting elements to this trimmer. • Use only the manufacturer’s recommended replacement parts and accessories. • Always disconnect the trimmer from the mains when leaving the trimmer unattended. • Disconnect the trimmer from the mains before carrying out maintenance or cleaning work. • Inspect and maintain the trimmer regularly. Have the trimmer repaired only by an authorized repairer. • Take care against injury from the blade(s) on the grass guard for controlling the cutting line length. After adjusting or extending new cutter line, always return the trimmer to its normal operating position before switching on. • Always ensure that the ventilation openings are kept clear of debris. • When not in use, store the trimmer in a clean, dry place. • If the supply cord is damaged, it must immediately be replaced by a qualified service agent to avoid further risk of electrocution or injury. • Ensure you are familiar with the controls and proper use of the equipment • Before use, always check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or ageing. • If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the plug from the mains supply immediately. The cutting line continues to rotate for a few moments after the motor is switched off. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AT A LATER DATE Precautionary Measures Work area • Do not expose the appliance to rain. Do not use the appliance in damp or wet conditions. • Only use the appliance in daylight or good artificial light. Personal protection • Wear stout shoes or boots to protect your feet. Do not operate the appliance wearing open-toed sandal or when barefoot. • Wear long trousers to protect your legs. Using your appliance • Be sure that the appliance is switched off before connecting it to the mains supply. • Stay alert at all times. Watch carefully what you are doing. Use common sense. • Do not operate the appliance when you tired, under effect of alcohol or medicines. • If the appliance begins to vibrate abnormally, switch it off and remove the plug from the socket. Allow rotating parts to stop and inspect the appliance for damage and loose part. • Never pull the cord to disconnect the plug from the socket. Keep the cord away from heat, oil and sharp edges. • If the main cable becomes damaged during use. Switch the appli ance off and disconnect the plug from the mains immediately. Do not touch the main cable before disconnect from the mains. Safety of others • Do not allow any person unfamiliar with these instructions to operate the appliance. • Do not allow by-standers or animal to come near the work area or to touch the appliance or mains cable. • Remember that the operator maybe held responsible for the accidents or hazards occurring to other people or their property. 5 GENERAL SAFETY RULES After use • Switch off, remove the plug from the socket and ensure that moving parts have stopped rotating before leaving the appliance unattended and before changing, cleaning or inspecting any parts of the appliance. • When not in use, the appliance should be stored in a dry place and out of reach of children. Inspection and repairs • Before use, check the appliance for damaged or defective parts. Check for misalignment and seizure of moving part, broken parts, damage to guards and switches or any other conditions that may affect its operation. • Do not use the appliance if any part is damaged or defective. Do not use the appliance if the switch does not turn it on and off. • Never use the appliance when any guard or housing element is damaged or not in place. • Ensure that the appliance will operate properly and perform its intended function. • Have any damaged or defective parts repaired or replaced an authorized repair agent. • Before use, check the mains cable for signs of damage, ageing or wear. • Do not use the appliance if the mains cable is damaged or defective. • If the mains cable is damaged or defective it must immediately be repaired by an authorised repair agent to avoid any further hazard. • Never attempt to remove or replace any parts other than those specified in this manual. General safety during usage This tool is double insulated; therefore no earth wire is required. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. • Before using the appliance, check that your cutting path is free from sticks, stones, wire and any other dangerous objects that may cause damage or be projected • Only use the appliance in the correct position, with the cutting line near the ground. Never switch the appliance on in any other position. 6 GENERAL SAFETY RULES • Switch on the appliance only when hands and feet are at a safe distance from the cutting line. • Avoid any body contact with the cutting line while the appliance is running. • Do not work on steep slopes, be sure of your footing. Be aware that freshly cut grass is damp and slippery. • Use only the appropriate of cutting line. Never use metal cutting line or fishing line. • After extending new cutting line, away return the appliance to its normal operating position before switching on. • Take care to keep the mains cable away from the cutting line. Always be aware of the position of the cable. • This appliance can be used by children aged from 16 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the appliance. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children. Pls keep product out of reach of children. ELECTRICAL INFORMATION WARNING TO AVOID ELECTRICAL HAZARDS, FIRE HAZARDS, OR DAMAGE TO THE TOOL, USE PROPER CIRCUIT PROTECTION. YOUR GRASS TRIMMER IS WIRED AT THE FACTROY FOR 230 V OPERATION. TO AVOID SHOCK OR FIRE, IF THE EXTENSION CORD IS WORN, CUT OR DAMAGED IN ANY WAY, REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY. DOUBLE INSULATED The grass trimmer is double insulated to provide a double thickness of insulation between you and the tool’s electrical system. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protective insulation. 7 ELECTRICAL INFORMATION WARNING USE ONLY IDENTIFICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS WHEN SERVICING THE GRASS TRIMMER, TO AVOID INJURY. WARNING DOUBLE INSULATION DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF NORMAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN OPERATING THIS GRASS TRIMMER. WARNING TO AVOID ELECTROCUTION: 1. Use only identical original replacement parts when servicing a tool with double insulation. Servicing should be performed by a qualified technician by agreed Service Center. 2. Do not use in wet or damp areas or expose to rain. GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS IN THE EVENT OF A MALFUNCTION OR BREAKDOWN, grounding provides the path of least resistance for electric current, and reduces the risk of electric shock. This tool is equipped with a POLARIZED plug. The plug MUST be plugged into a matching grounded extension cord in accordance with All local codes and ordinances. DO NOT MODIFY THE PLUG PROVIDED. If it will not fit the properly grounded extension cord, have the proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician. 8 ELECTRICAL INFORMATION CAUTION ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OUTLET IS PROPERLY GROUNDED. IF UNCERTAIN, HAVE IT CHECKED BY A CERTIFIED ELECTRICIAN. WARNING THIS GRASS TRIMMER IS FOR OUTDOOR USE ONLY. DO NOT EXPOSE TO RAIN OR USE IN DAMP LOCATIONS. Make sure your extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition. Always replace a damaged extension cord or have it repaired by a qualified person befor use. Keep extension cords away from sharp objects, excessive heat and damp or wet areas. Before connecting the motor to the power line, make sure the switch is in the OFF position and the electric current is identical to that stamped on the motor nameplate. Running at a lower voltage will damage the motor. WARNING ALTHOUGH THIS GRASS TRIMMER IS DOUBLE INSULATED, THE EXTENSION CORD AND RECEPTACLE MUST STILL BE GROUNDED WHILE IN USE TO PROTECT THE OPERATOR FROM ELECTRICAL SHOCK. 9 SYMBOLS Some of the following symbols may be used on this product. Please study them and learn their meaning. Proper interpretation of these symbols will allow you to operate the product better and safer. Precaution that involve your safety You must read the operating instructions carefully. Pay attention that bystanders are not injured by objects thrown out from the machine. Keep bystanders a safe distance away from the machine. Wear eye protection. Wear ear protection. Disconnect from the mains supply before any maintenance work. Do not use the machine in the rain or leave it outdoors when it is raining. Noise level specification Lwa in dB. Double-insulated construction CE certificate Do not dispose of electrical equipment in domestic waste. 10 KNOW YOUR STRING TRIMMER KNOW YOUR STRING TRIMMER (See Figure 1.) The safe use of this product requires an understanding of the information on the product and in this operator’s manual as well as a knowledge of the project you are attempting. Before use of this product, familiarize yourself with all operating features and safety rules. Fitting the guard (See Figure 2 & Figure 4.) 1. Position housing on machine as indicated 2. Rotate housing into correct location 3. Fix housing with the screws 4. Fix support wheel (for vertical cutting) with the screws Fig. 2 Fig. 4 Fig. 3 WARNING Never use the grass trimmer unless the guard is properly fitted. Fitting the secondary handle (See Figure 5 & Figure 6.) 1. Position handle as shown 2. Adjust handle to desired angle 3. Make a note of setting you have chosen 4. Pass bolt across support and handle 5. Fix screw from other side. Do not over-tighten. Fig. 5 Fig. 6 12 ASSEMBLY Adjusting suitable cutter position (See Figure 7 & Figure 9.) 1. Unscrew tube lock ring. 2. Slide tubing to desired length 3. Tighten tube lock ring. 4. Press motor housing angle button to pivot into desired cutting position (fig 9). Release button. (This facilitates cutting under obstacles). 5. To add an extension cable, connect an approved external extension to trimmer cable and attach it to holder, as shown in fig. 8. Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Fig. 9 Unwinding cutter wire Check state of cutter wire before starting machine. Wire needs to be long enough to achieve desired cut. If necessary press winder button and pull out suitable length of wire. Stopping/starting trimmer 1. Ensure a secure stance and hold on to the trimmer with two hand. Do not deposit the cutting head on the ground. 2. To switch on depress the ON/ OFF switch. Release the switch to switch off. 13 OPERATION After starting trimmer, allow motor to turn over for a few seconds before cutting grass. Cutter wire automatically adjusts length of the two ends of wire. Now you can start work. If wire is finished up, you cannot achieve desired cut. You should occasionally tap cutter head on the ground to feed extra wire. Tips on horizontal cutting (See Figure 10 & Figure 11.) • • • • • • • • • • Always start appliance before cutting grass. Hold machine with both hands. Swing gently from one side to the other, from left to right, with trimmer at angle of 30°. Cut long grass in stages. Never cut damp or wet grass. Do not exceed trimmer capacity. Always use it at full speed. Do not touch stones, concrete or fencing with trimmer. The wheel is designed to facilitate cutting next to fences and walls. As soon as you feel the motor slowing down, reduce the load. Open out flower guard hoop to prevent cutting flowers and flower beds (fig 11) Fig. 10 Fig. 11 Tips on vertical cutting (See Figure 12 & Figure 13.) • • Press main handle control button. Pivot main handle by 90° or 180°. Beware: Head turns only in one direction. • • • Always start appliance before cutting grass. Hold machine with both hands Use stop wheel to move trimmer forward effortlessly. Fig. 12 Fig. 13 14 MAINTENANCE Your grass trimmer has been designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends upon proper tool care and regular cleaning. WARNING Before performing any maintenance, switch off and unplug the tool. • Regularly clean the ventilation slot in your grass trimmer using a soft brush or dry cloth. • Regularly clean the cutting line and spool using a soft brush or dry cloth. • Regularly use a blunt scraper to remove grass and dirt from the underneath of the guard. Fitting a new spool of cutting line (See Figure 14 & Figure 15.) • Unplug appliance. • Press cover clips ① and remove cover from head ③. • • • Remove empty coil ②. Clean all grass and dust from head before inserting new coil. Rotate it to correct position. • Pass the two nylon wires across the two openings ⑤. • • • Pull out about 10 cm of wire on each side. Line up cover clips ① in notches in head ⑤. Secure cover and check proper engagement in notches. ① ② ③ ④ ⑤ ① ② ③ ④ Fig. 14 Fig. 15 WARNING If nylon wires stick out from protective housing, trim them to correct length with a pair of scissors. 15 MAINTENANCE WARNING If the cutting lines protrude beyond the trimming blade, cut them off so that they just reach the blade. Winding new line onto a spool (See Figure 16 & Figure 17 & Figure 18.) • Only use 1.4mm replacement line • You may wind new cutting line onto an empty spool. • Replacement packs of cutting line are available from dealer. • Remove the empty spool from the grass trimmer as described above. • Remove any remaining cutting line from the spool. • First feed 10cm of cutting line ⑥ into the two eyelet ⑦ in the upper section of the spool as show • Wind the cutting line onto the spool in the direction of the arrow. Make sure to wind the line on neatly and in layers. Do not criss-cross. • Feed cutting line ⑥ into the two eyelet ⑦ in the upper section of the spool as show • Finish winding, Produce as described above to fit the spool on the grass trimmer. Do not forget to release the cutting line from the parking slot. Use LawnMaster replacement spool; part # 121004101 ⑥ ⑥ ⑦ ① Fig. 16 Fig. 17 WARNING Only use the appropriate original type of cutting line. 16 Fig. 18 TROUBLESHOOTING If your grass trimmer seems not to operate properly, follow the instruction below. If this does not solve the problems, please contact your local agreed Service Center WARNING Before proceeding, switch off and unplug. Tool runs slowly • Check that the spool housing can rotate freely. Carefully clean it if necessary. • Check that the cutting line does not protrude more than 10cm from the spool housing. If it does, cut it off so that it just reaches the line trimming blade. Automatic line feed does not work. • Keep the tabs depressed and remove the spool cover from the housing. • Pull the cutting line until it protrudes 10cm from the housing. If insufficient cutting line is left on the spool, install a new spool of cutting line as instructed above. • Align the tabs on the spool cover with the cut outs in the housing. • Pushing the cover onto the housing until it snaps securely into place. • If the cutting line protrudes beyond the trimming blade, cut it off so that it just reaches the blade. • If the automatic line feed still does not work or the spool is jammed, try the following suggestion: • Carefully clean the spool cover and housing. • Remove the spool and check if the lever can move freely. • Remove the spool and unwind the cutting line, then wind it on neatly again as describe above. Replace the spool as instructed. DISPOSAL AND RECYCLING Machines do not belong with domestic waste. The unit is supplied in packaging to prevent its being damaged in transit. This packaging is raw material and can therefore be reused or can be returned to the raw material system. The unit and its accessories are made of various types of material, such as metal and plastic. Defective components must be disposed of as special waste. Ask your dealer or your local council. 17 WARRANTY We recommend you check the product is in good condition immediately after purchase and read the instructions carefully before use. In no cases can the guarantee give rise to a refund of direct or indirect damages or liabilities of any sort. This guarantee does not cover: 1. Abnormal use not conforming with instruction manual 2. Inadequate maintenance 3. Poor combination or inadequate lubrication 4. Use for professional or hiring purposes 5. Assembly, adjustment and starting procedures 6.
