All-around protection against tampering A comprehensive solution is now available to protect self-service terminals against various tampering methods. Based on inbuilt cameras and powerful image processing software, Optical Security Guard detects a wide range of manipulations like skimming and other manipulations to customer panel, cash slot and card entry slot in near real-time.
According to the European ATM Crime Report 20131, the worldwide cost of ATM crime is dramatically increasing over the last years. During 2013 in Europe alone, such losses came to 248.33 million euros. To counteract these risks, an end-to-end solution is required that takes effect from the very outset before criminal activities can be attempted.
When it comes to outwitting ATMs, criminals are inventive and self-service terminals face a variety of risks every day, including skimming and cash trapping attacks. Fraudsters might attach a device to the cash slot to trap the cash when it is dispensed, or fit a skimmer to the card entry slot to copy the card data, or place an overlay over the keyboard or PIN pad to record the PIN. The list of potential attacks is very long. Security solutions that target specific aspects provide good p rotection but cannot prevent such fraudulent devices from being a ttached to a cash system.

Optical Security Guard is an ATM-fascia surveillance solution using inbuilt cameras. The cameras are operated in a surveillance mode in between transactions and therefore manipulations to an ATM can be detected.2 The intelligent image recognition software interacts with the customer panel and card entry slot cameras that are integrated in the ATM and continuously analyzes the defined/actual state of the facia. In the event of tampering due to facia modifications to an ATM, the system can trigger an alarm and, if applicable, stop follow-up transactions. If the self-service terminal is connected to a security center, technicians there can be alerted directly so that they can inspect the self service terminal on short notice.
