Defining the Evolution Virtual Hub, VHub Fully operational hub in a node housing VHub - Flexible, Cost-Effective Cable operators face two key challenges: the relentless demand for advanced services coupled with intense pressures to control costs. Aurora Networks’ Virtual Hub helps solve both challenges by delivering the functionality of a 20,000-home hub in a single node housing. Intelligent Economics The VHub™ fundamentally changes the economics associated with offering and upgrading services to both metropolitan and small, isolated markets. Cable operators can use the rugged platform to eradicate hub sites and facilities, thus accruing significant benefits. Advanced Engineering Aurora’s VHub replaces a typical 20,000-customer hub facility with a fully operational hub in a standard node housing. Operators can launch complete systems solutions, such as broadcast/narrowcast (BC/NC) amplification and combining, RFoG and EPON, from a single VHub. Its modular design also ensures flexibility. Operators can populate the VHub with any combination of up to 12 modules to support both residential and commercial applications. Remote monitoring and control via Aurora’s Opti-Trace™ EMS software simplifies management as well. Broadcast/Narrowcast VHub When configured with Aurora Networks’ Light-Plex™ modules, the VHub integrates the functions of a DWDM narrowcast demultiplexer with a BC/NC combiner. It supports BC and NC amplification with automatic optical level setup. In this application, cable operators can use the VHub to: Easily expand or deploy new services leveraging existing fiber infrastructures VHub Innovations Hub equivalent in a single node housing Two versions available: 12-slot NC4000 6-slot NC2000 Mini VHub Interchangeable optical transport and access modules Support for residential and commercial applications Deploy EDFAs to overcome passive optical splitting and combining losses and create BC/NC feeds for 16 to 24 unique downstream serving areas Software controlled optical level adjustment simplifies activations and enables “live” alignment of optical signals The VHub’s optical switching modules also enable rapid deployment of switching anywhere in the network without the expense of an OTN cabinet. These low-loss, high-speed optical switches improve network reliability by providing alternate routing. Supports Residential and Commercial Apps RFoG 1550 Fwd 1610 Rev Splitter Broadcast Tx EDFA WDM Node PON™ CWDM backhaul DR 3002 Gig E VHub™ PON 1490 Fwd 1310 Rev RFoG + GEPON CPE Node PON™ module > 80 km RFoG/RFPON VHub The flexible VHub is also effective for serving low-density markets to generate additional revenues. It overcomes the reach, fiber consumption, and redundancy shortcomings of initial FTTP implementations. When configured for RFoG/RFPON, the VHub: Supports 256 homes Extends downstream and upstream reach Eliminates fiber construction Enables area-by-area upgrades Supports alternate routing By adding the Node PON™ module, the VHub also provides a smooth migration path to the all-IP network of the future via Aurora Networks’ RFPON solution. Commercial Services VHub Operators seeking to generate revenues from commercial services can populate the VHub with the Node PON module to deliver a cost-effective EPON and TURBO EPON solution to businesses. Optimized for serving outlying business parks, in this application, the VHub: Delivers up to 16 Gbps bandwidth to up to 1024 PON subscribers Delivers up to 88 Gbps aggregate bandwidth for point-to-point (GE, 10GE) access and uplink connection Supports carrier-class performance with ability to meet stringent SLA requirements Provides deep network resiliency to enhance reliability Enables high-margin business services applications Collector Node VHub As cable operators deploy DOCSIS® 3.0 services, the VHub can also function as a collector node to solve upstream challenges and extend the life of DFB lasers. In this application, the VHub: Minimizes optical transmission link length from the legacy node Uses digital return to transmit upstream data to the CMTS Extends upstream reach to over 100 km VHub Advantages Eliminates real estate costs Reduces powering expenses Maximizes fiber capacity Lowers capital expenses Speeds new revenue generation VHub Saves Cable Operators Money www.aurora.com www.pace.com 1764 Automation Pkwy San Jose, CA 95131 Voice: +1-408-428-9500 Fax: +1-408-428-9590 Cable operators can reap significant cost savings by deploying Aurora Networks’ VHub. Because the housing can be strand, pedestal or wall mounted, operators can serve new customers without building new hubs. Savings accrue from: Elimination of real estate costs, facility construction and permitting Reduction in operational expenses — powering and cooling costs Reduction of capital expenses — no new HVAC or backup power Generate Revenues Quicker Time to market is also faster. Eliminating the need for new facilities means: No construction time No permitting delays No HVAC or generators to buy The result: quicker deployment and quicker revenue generation. Leverage Existing Fiber The VHub also enables cable operators to maximize the capacity of their existing fiber plant. Operators deploying the VHub can: Serve up to 24 nodes or serving areas with a single VHub Use as few as 2 fibers to enable up to 24 serving areas For fully redundant routes, serve 24 nodes with only 4 fibers Create a 256 HHP RFoG/RFPON serving area at a legacy node location with existing fibers Reduce passive optical splitting and combining losses Choose the Right Platform Aurora Networks recognizes that cable markets come in all sizes. To provide flexibility, it offers two VHub models: 12-slot NC4000 VHub 6-slot NC2000 Mini VHub Both platforms use the same modules and plug-ins, have common headend equipment for operation, and share the same integrated status monitoring and control. This modular approach and common equipment enables cable operators to leverage their investment while building on a pay-as-you-grow basis. © 2014 Aurora Networks.
