Møller Foundation and Ole Kirk’s Foundation have teamed up with the Capital Region of Denmark to fund a feasibility study to identify opportunities to achieve this goal by establishing the best possible new setting for the centre. 5 Rigshospitalet Becoming a world class hospital for women and children stems from 20 % new building and 80 % organizational development Future ”new behavior” decisions affecting others cannot be made without involving them. Co-create. 6 User panel lays foundation for development 7 What have we done to define a future hospital? • Mapping 100 patient pathways • 7 clinical working groups • 21 study tours to mother and child hospitals • International hospital conferences • All on-going Danish hospital construction sites visited • Design of future user experience • Camps on good patient journeys and building • Screening of future health technology 8 Mapping 100 different patient pathways 9 Rigshospitalet Planning the clinical future Recommendations: • Staff comes to the patient and not vice versa • Gather all children and adolescents (0-18 years) at Rigshospitalet in a new hospital • Establish one surgical ward for children and adolescents • Establish one PICU for children and adolescents • Gather all activities related to pregnancy and childbirth at Rigshospitalet • Integrate treatment, research and education 10 “It would be great if you could also borrow a bike …” Study tours Study tours allowed us to learn from the experiences of architects, medical staff and management. Co-creation camp Mixing users and staff at the camp led to solutions that work for both groups. Interviews Home interviews created a sense of confidentiality, allowing the researchers to compare disease management at home compared to in the hospital. Participatory observation Hospital researchers got to see the hospital through users’ eyes, for example, by having the children show them around. Mobil app The app made it possible for users to also contribute ideas and solutions. Authentic experience As part of their analysis the team behind the study was “admitted” overnight at various JMC . clinics. 11 130 patients, relatives and staff gathered for a two-day camp Film Specialists Staff Focus: To optimise and design future patient pathways for women in labour, children and adolescents Patients Relatives Rigshospitalet Five design principles for the future user experience World’s best hospital for children and families Integrated play Designed for everyday life See me, ask me, let me The good journey Clear zones World’s best hospital 13 “Bows and ballerina skirts – even on the operating table. The hospital princess.” Kids will be kids – also in the hospital “When you can’t control anything yourself, even your own body, being able to go out to the kitchen and pick whether you want juice or a milkshake makes a huge difference.” Chronically ill 18-year-old 15 Rigshospitalet Correlation between play and healing Autonomous play (Carnival) Play between hospital and everyday life Constructed play Integration of play and treatment Therapeutic play – treatment and rehab Play and games with new technology Happy play– play for handling grief Fun, games and nudging 16 Rigshospitalet Take home messages • • • The patient pathway should be an integrated part of the design of a new hospital! We cannot design a new hospital without involving patients, families and staff! Building a new hospital we have every opportunity of designing a new patient experience, new ways of working and new ways of organizing and leading the hospital! 17
