CH A P T E R 1 FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN Modules Overview This chapter provides an overview of the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules. Note Cisco IOS Release 12.2SRA and later releases do not support the FlexWAN module or Supervisor Engine 2. These releases support the Enhanced FlexWAN module and the Sup720 and Sup32. In addition, note that Cisco IOS Release 12.2SRB introduced support for the Route Switch Processor 720 (RSP720). Contents This chapter contains these sections: • Features, page 1-1 • FlexWAN Software and Hardware Requirements, page 1-4 • Enhanced FlexWAN Software and Hardware Requirements, page 1-5 • Front Panel Description, page 1-6 Features The FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules are installed in a Catalyst 6500 series switch or Cisco 7600 series router that has a supervisor engine with a Multilayer Switch Feature Card (MSFC) and Policy Feature Card (PFC). The MSFC, in conjunction with the Enhanced FlexWAN module, provides multiprotocol routing support with full Internet route connectivity for speeds ranging from serial RS-232 to OC-3. The FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules can accept up to two Cisco 7200/7500 WAN port adapters, which deliver WAN consolidation and extend quality of service (QoS) and traffic management capabilities over WAN segments. The FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules support ATM and POS OC-3 links and channelized, clear-channel port adapters at speeds from DS0 to T3/E3. The Enhanced FlexWAN module also provides connectivity to the crossbar fabric and enhancements in processor speed and onboard memory. For information on configuring platform-specific features supported on the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules, see Chapter 3, “FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN Software Features Configuration Information.” Cisco 7600 FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN Modules Configuration Guide OL-8673-03 1-1 Chapter 1 FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN Modules Overview Features Note To use the FlexWAN module, you must have a supervisor engine with an MSFC and PFC (or greater). You configure the FlexWAN module through the MSFC. Ensure that the image you use has the letter 'v' which indicates that the image supports the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules (for example, c6k222-jsv-mz). Cisco IOS Release 12.2SR and later releases do not support the FlexWAN module. These releases support the Enhanced FlexWAN module only. In addition, note that the Supervisor Engine 32 does not support the FlexWAN module, only the Enhanced FlexWAN module. Note To use the Enhanced FlexWAN module, you must have a Supervisor Engine 2 with an MSFC2 and PFC2, a Supervisor Engine 720 or Supervisor Engine 32, or a Route Switch Processor 720 (introduced in Cisco IOS Release 12.2SRB). In Cisco IOS Release 12.2SRA and later, the Supervisor Engine 2 is no longer supported. Note In a redundant MSFC configuration in route processor redundancy (RPR) mode, the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN module interfaces appear only on the designated MSFC. To configure the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN module interfaces on the redundant MSFC, you must force a switchover. The interfaces can be configured and the configuration can be saved. The saved configuration is used on the redundant MSFC if a switchover occurs. In a redundant MSFC configuration in RPR+ mode, the configurations on the active MSFC are synchronized to the standby MSFC. Supported Line Cards and Port Adapters Table 1-1 shows the port adapters supported on the FlexWAN and Enhanced FlexWAN modules. Note A FlexWAN or Enhanced FlexWAN module without port adapters inserted is not a supported configuration. For information on power requirements for supervisor engines and switching modules, refer to the Cisco 7600 Series Router Installation Guide and the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch Installation Guide. Warning Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install, replace, or service this equipment.
