PA C K E R F O O T B A L L 2012 The Moultrie Observer Page 2 PACKER FOOTBALL 2012 Saturday, August 25, 2012 Packers set sights on playing 15 games By Wayne Grandy [email protected] clusively at corner. Quan Patillo, Kenji Thompson, Michael Sutton and Carlos Johnson also are expected to see playing time. Propst has expressed concern over the safety position, which was a problem at times last season. Senior Jamal Phillips will be back to play the rover. Garrett Pearce appears to have the inside track for the other position. Also battling for playing time are Marquan Greene, Tony Simpson, John Peterson and O’Shay Williams. Pearson is looking for plenty of three-and-outs and turnovers and when the offense takes over, it, too, has some formidable weapons. Colquitt will try to speed up its already rapid-fire offense this season and will have senior Cole Segraves back as the starter. Segraves completed 160-of-268 passes for 2,115 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder also is a threat to pull the ball down, tuck it under, lower his head and run for yardage. Junior Daniel Mobley, who played well when given the opportunity last year, is expected to continue to get playing time this year. Ty Smith has graduated and gone on the University of Georgia, leaving Hill to be the primary target for Segraves and Mobley. Hill led the Packers with eight touchdown receptions last season. But Kishaun Taylor, D.J Johnson, Todd Boyd, Dillon Frazier and Andy Bush also offer appealing targets in the opposing secondaries. Freshman Kiel Pollard also could get some significant playing time. When the Packers employ a tight end, Nate Madison and Colby Reneker are expected to man that position. John Boatwright was the Packers second-leading rusher last year and he is back. Also expected to get carries are Maleek Lewis, Sihiem King and Tim Sanders. All are effective pass receivers as well. The Packers must replace Bryce Giddens, now at Arkansas State; Preston Mobley, now at Georgia; and Alex Murphy on the offensive line. Octavius Jackson, a 300pounder who has committed to Florida, will start at left tackle and Gabe Mobley will be at the right tackle spot. Jeffrey Davis has a hold on one guard position and Dalton Dillon has been moved from his starting guard position to replace Giddens, a 3 1/2-year starter, at center. Propst said he expects Cade Blackburn to take over the other guard position at some point, but Register will be on hand to start un- til he does. One of the biggest holes the Packers have to fill is at place-kicker, where Oscar Luna has graduated and taken his considerable skills to Valdosta State. Luna hit 16-of-18 field goal attempts and 45-of-47 extra point attempts last year. Roberto Vega and Will Bannister will handle those job. Tyler Yost returns to punt and Britt Jones is back as the snapper. Mobley and Yost will be the holders. Hill is expected to be the primary punt returner. Lewis and Sanders will be the kick returners. The Packers face one of the state’s most challenging non-region schedules this year, starting with the rematch against North Gwinnett in the Corky Kell Classic in the Georgia Dome. The Bulldogs went 10-2 last year, with their second loss coming at the hands of the Packers in the playoffs by a 17-7 score. The Packers then travel to meet Thomas County Central before playing host to Lovejoy and Carver of Columbus to complete nonregion play. The Yellow Jackets were 7-5 last year (including a 4414 loss to the Packers); Lovejoy was 14-1, losing in the Class AAAA state championship game to Tucker 22-7; and Carver-Columbus was 12-2, losing to Buford in the semifinals. The Packers region schedule has become more challenging with the addition of Camden County and Brunswick to the league and the addition of Robby Pruitt as the coach at Coffee Please see PACKERS, Page 12 Turner’s - ladies fine clothier - Come See Us For Winning Game Looks Best Wishes To Our Great Players, Cheerleaders and Coaches! 104 S. Main St. 985-3344 759065dsv MOULTRIE – When Colquitt County made its surprising run to the state semifinals in 2009, the Packers might not have been quite ready to take the next step. The next year, Colquitt had one of the top offenses in the state, but defensively, the Packers were not stout enough, as evidenced by their 52-38 loss to Brookwood in the state championship game. Packers coach Rush Propst upgraded his defense significantly last season, putting new coordinator Travis Pearson in charge and but for a couple of controversial calls and an inability to make a stop in the closing minutes of the state semifinal loss to eventual champion Grayson, the Packers might have been playing in the Georgia Dome for the second straight year. This year, the Packers appear to have the blend of potent offense and veteran defense to take a shot at a state championship that has eluded the school since 1994, despite having a number of excellent teams in the intervening years. Propst is no stranger to state championships. He won five at Hoover (Ala.), before coming to Moultrie in 2008. He has played for three others. He has a feel for what it takes to play a Game 15. And he has not backed off from saying the 2012 Packers could be best accumulation of athletes he has had since he has been in Colquitt County. MaxPreps appears to agree, ranking the Packers No. 18 in its preseason national poll. Despite a Region 1AAAAAA schedule that includes games against Camden County, Lowndes, Valdosta, Coffee, Tift County and Brunswick and a non- region slate that has game against four opponents that went a combined 43-10 last year, there is plenty of optimism in Moultrie. The Packers appear to be especially deep defensively this year with the line and linebacking corps expected to be able to use a number of players successfully. The defensive line is deep enough that the Packers staff did not hesitate to move All-Region tackle/end Travis Register to offense to bolster that unit. Register started at tackle last year, but moved to end. That position has a number of other quality players, including Creig Harris, Ikeem Blakley, Jeffrey Lawson and I-Key Pinkins. Junior Jamiyus Pittman, a 270-pounder, started at end last year, but has moved inside this season to join a group that also includes 300pound Mike Parrish and Ta’Phari Wright. Propst said he will not hesitate to use any of the aforementioned at any time. The linebacking corps lost leading tackler Sharmaine Washington to Valdosta State, but that unit, too, is deep. Returning starting middle linebacker John Gray, a 6-foot-1, 235-pounder, was the Packers second-leading tackler last year and will be playing on the next level next season. Sophomore Bull Barge is the likely starter on the strong side and junior Brandon Key will be on the weak side. And there is little dropoff when Tomarcio Reese and Quintin Hampton go into the game. The two starting cornerbacks are likely to be players who have committed to Division I programs. Johnny Ward will be back at one position. Bobby Hill, perhaps the Packers top receiver, will play plenty on the other side. He has committed to Ole Miss, which plans to use him ex- 759065 Saturday, August 25, 2012 PACKER FOOTBALL 2012 Page 3 758958 Page 4 PACKER FOOTBALL 2012 Saturday, August 25, 2012 Only one goal left for Propst, Packers By Wayne Grandy [email protected] in Mobile, Ala., while also serving as the Alba head football coach. The following year, the two schools were merged to form the Alma Bryant Hurricanes. Propst was the team’s head coach, leading the Hurricanes to a 12-1 record and seven straight shutout victories. In 1999, he moved to Hoover, taking over a Buccaneer program that had endured three straight losing seasons. His first Hoover team went 7-3. The next year, the Bucs went 14-1, beating Daphne in the championship game and giving Hoover its first outright state title since 1977. In 2001, Hoover went 14-1, falling to Daphne in the state championship game. Beginning in 2002, Hoover won four straight state championships in Class 6A, posting records of 13-1 in 2002, 14-1 in 2003, 15-0 in 2004 and 14-1 in 2005. It was the first time a team had won four straight titles in Class 6A in Alabama. In 2006, the Bucs were ranked No. 1 in the nation preseason by USA Today and went 14-1, falling to Prattville in the state championship game. In 2007, Hoover opened the season with a 20-17 overtime loss to Colerain High School of Cincinnati in the Kirk Herbstreit Challenge in Cincinnati, then won 10 straight and advanced to the state quarterfinals. During his tenure at Hoover, 50 Bucs earned college scholarships and two of his former players reached the National Football League: Antwon Odom with the Cincinnati Bengals and Chad Jackson with the Denver Broncos. Propst has won numerous Coach of the Year awards from 1992-2007 and was The Associated Press Coach of the Year in 1998 and 2000 and was the Schutt Sport Southeast Regional Coach of the Year in 2004. In 1993, he was the defensive coordinator in the Alabama-Mississippi high school all-star game won by Alabama 10-6 and in 2000 was the offensive coordinator of the Alabama team that won the Alabama-Mississippi all-star game 33-14. In 2004, he was the head coach of the Alabama allstar team that beat Mississippi 24-22. He also was the head coach of the east team in the inaugural Offense-Defense East-West All American Bowl held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in January 2007. Propst will take a career record of 211-79 into tonight’s 2012 season-opener against North Gwinnett in Georgia Dome. “BUILD A WINNER!” GO PACK GO! 758950 MOULTRIE – Rush Propst has certainly turned around the Colquitt County High football fortunes since he arrived from Hoover, Ala., in 2008. Over the last three years, the Packers have played more football games than any other school in the state. After Colquitt County went 4-6 his first season, Propst has led the Packers to the state semifinals twice and to the state champion game once. His postseason record over the last three seasons is 10-3. But after winning five state championships at Hoover, Propst clearly would like to present one to Colquitt County. The Packers have just one state championship, that coming in 1994. Propst took them to the state championship game in 2010, only to see his Packers fall to Brookwood 52-38. Last year, the Packers led Grayson with less than a minute remaining in their state semifinal game, only to see the Rams come back to win and then defeat Walton the next week for the state championship. Propst has done all he has set out to do in Moultrie, except win a game No. 15. This year could be the year. Last season, Propst dealt with the effects of cancer surgery and treatment that began in February 2011. A clean bill of health received during an August meeting with his doctors in Birmingham, Ala., has left the 54-year-old coach champing at the bit for the title that he has been so close to each of the last three years. He has a veteran coaching staff and perhaps the most talented team he has fielded since he has been in Moultrie. He has said that he 2012 and 2013 teams might have the most talent of any he has had since coming to Moultrie. A state championship would certainly justify the faith the Colquitt County Board of Education had in Propst when they hired him in 2008. The Packers had gone 2-8 in 2007 when the board turned to the successful Hoover (Ala.) High School coach to revive its program. And it did not take him long. The Packers went 4-6 in 2008 after going 14-18 over the three previous seasons under Tim Cokely, then surprised Georgia high school football observers and pleased Colquitt County fans by leading the Packers to an 11-3 record in 2009. In 2010, the Packers lost their first three games of the season, but rebounded to advance to the state championship game, where they fell to Brookwood. Their loss in the 2010 state semifinals came to eventual Rush Propst watches senior quarterback Cole Segraves. state champion Camden County. had suffered through three gram back to the success it Propst had been at straight losing seasons. Pack adds Buckhannon, Windham to coaching staff By Wayne Grandy [email protected] MOULTRIE – The Colquitt County High staff will be without longtime offensive line coach Kevin Giddens this season, but Rush Propst has added two new young coaches to a group that he says “is probably the best we’ve had since I’ve been here.” Giddens resigned after last season after his second tour of duty with the Packers. He started with Colquitt County in 1994 and was on the sideline when the Packers won their only state championship. After serving as a head coach at Coffee and as an assistant principal at Colquitt County for several years, he returned to sidelines and work with the offensive the last five seasons. Joey Bennett, who has worked with Giddens in handling the offensive line the last four seasons, will have the primary responsibility of the offensive line and will be assisted by Shawn Sutton. Bennett, who played for Propst at Hoover (Ala.) and coached there for four years, came to Colquitt County as part of Propst’s first staff and has been on board since. Sutton is in his second year on the Packers staff. His primary role is to oversee the team’s strength and conditioning program. He also works with the kicking game. Now in his 26th year as a head coach, Sutton took a job as the head coach of a school in Alabama earlier this year, but after some complications in the arrangements, returned to Moultrie. Sutton has been a head coach in Alabama at BerryFayette and Ashville High and also was an assistant under Propst at Hoover. Jeff Hammond returns for his fifth season as the Packers offensive coordina- tor. A former wide receiver at Troy, Hammond had been the offensive coordinator at Early County for three seasons before joining Propst’s first Packers staff in 2008. Hammond has directed an offense that has produced such outstanding performers as Xzavier Ward, Bryce Giddens, Preston Mobley, Ty Smith, Quin Roberson, Tommy Hudson, Tevin King and Tyler Brown. He also will coach the Packers quarterbacks this season. He and wife Jennifer have three sons: Wesley, Tyler and Jacob. Zach Grage will be back for his fourth year on the Packers staff and will handle the running backs. Originally from Indiana, where he was a four-year member of the University of Evansville baseball team, he also is the pitching coach on the Packers baseball team. His wife Mandy also is a teacher in the school system. They have one son, Noah. Gregg Segraves, who worked with the defensive backs and was the special teams coordinator last year, has moved to the offensive side of the football this year and will work with the tight ends. Now in his 25th season as a head coach, he was the head coach at White County for five seasons before coming to Moultrie in 2011. He is the father of Packers quarterback Cole Segraves. He has two other sons, Chantz and Cameron. Marcus Windham is the newest addition to the Packers staff and he will handle the wide receiving corps. A native of Mississippi, Windham played collegiate football at Southwest Baptist College in Missouri. As a Bearcat, he caught 91 passes for 982 yards and scored eight touchdowns. The Packers made significant strides in 2011 under firstyear defensive coordinator Travis Pearson last season and the veteran coach could have an even better unit this year. Pearson came to Moultrie from Montgomery, Ala., where he was the head coach at Jeff Davis High the previous two seasons. The Gilbertown, Ala., native played college football at Alabama State and played eight seasons in the Arena Football League. In 2003, he was named to Arena Football’s 15th anniversary team as a linebacker/fullback. He also was the head coach at Central of Haynesville (Ala.) and at Elmore County (Ala.) before going to Jeff Davis. Pearson and wife Maria have a daughter Marissa and two sons, Travis II and Trevor. Former Colquitt County basketball player Andy Harden is back for his second season as the Packer defensive ends coach. Harden played basketball at Thomas College and was an assistant basketball coach at Colquitt County before becoming the head coach at Worth County. He also coached the defensive line at Worth County for six years before returning to Colquitt County last year. He and wife Kindra, a former Colquitt County cheerleader, have three children: Ragan, Nathan and Cason. Former Colquitt County football and baseball player Greg Tillery is back for his 13th season in the Packers football program. He will coach the varsity defensive tackles for the fourth season and is the junior varsity baseball coach. Tillery played baseball for four seasons at Georgia Southwestern after graduating from Colquitt County in 1980. He and wife Melanie have two sons, Matt and Drew. Danny Blaylock is in his third year on the Packers staff and will work with the linebackers. Blaylock started his coaching career at Thomasville in 1989 and was a member of the Bulldogs’ 1993 state runner-up team’s staff. He also coached football and baseball at Westover High and was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots for six years before coming to Moultrie. He and wife Kathryn have a son Tilden, a member of the Packers football team, and a daughter Kelly. Former All-State and All-ACC defensive back Dextra Polite is back for his 12th season as an assistant coach at his alma mater and will coach the cornerbacks. A member of Colquitt County’s 1994 state championship team, Polite was an All-American at Georgia Military College before going on to start at Clemson. Polite also coaches ninth-grade basketball and track. He and wife Katrina have four children. The other new addition to the Packers staff is Tracy Buckhannon, who will coach the safeties. Buckhannon comes to Moultrie from Elmore County High in Electra, Ala., where he was named the state’s top assistant coach in 2009 under Norman Dean. He also has worked for Travis Pearson. A 2003 graduate of Auburn University, Buckhannon also served as the assistant women’s basketball coach Huntingdon University in Montgomery, Ala. Buckhannon has two daughters, Teresia and Traci. Ryan Kebler is in his third season as Colquitt County’s head athletic trainer. A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Kebler is a certified athletic trainer and served in that capacity for 10 years at St. Petersburg Catholic before coming to Colquitt County. He and wife Penny, who is the athletic department secretary, have two sons, Harrison and Hunter. Former Packer player Chris Evans is in his fifth season as the Packers film and video coordinator.
