Warranty Warnings ! WARNING: When inserting modules into the chassis, slide them gently, not forcefully. Excessive force may cause the modules to be seated improperly in the chassis, and result in possible damage to the module or the chassis. Install or remove modules one at a time. Doing this aids in preventing the PSAX system from indicating any erroneous failure messages, and allows the PSAX system time to reinitialize and display the accurate configuration of the module that is inserted. ! CAUTION: Modifying or tampering with PSAX chassis components may void your warranty. Any modification to this equipment not expressly authorized by Lucent Technologies may void your granted authority to operate such equipment. The tones offered enable line continuity and circuit emulation testing, as well as standard call tones. The test tones are primarily used in edge applications where the PSAX 1250 and PSAX 4500 work with a voice switch, such as the 5ESS CO switch. This feature also permits a CO edge device to provide dial tone and related features to CPE voice equipment and call routing information to connection gateway devices, without using expensive circuit switches. The CAS function on this module enables terminating and sending digits to the carrier group for call routing. The module meets R1 (American) standards in CAS, qualifying on all wink start, ground start, and loop start provisions using the 6-Port Enhanced DS1/T1 and the 12-Port Medium-Density DS1 Multiservice modules. It also meets all R2 (European) standards for the 6-Port Enhanced E1 Multiservice and the 21-Port High-Density E1 Multiservice modules. Standard tones from TIA-464-B that are supported include Silent, Busy, Reorder, Dial, Ring, Test, Test Progress, and Special Information (three frequencies). These tones are supplied by the module under the supervision of the connection gateway as required. Announcements can be downloaded to the module for playback on CES interfaces. The module can compress announcements as they are made, saving memory space and speeding transmission time between the CPUn module and the TAS module. Both the TAS module and the CPUn module store compressed announcements in their cache memory. PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 2-1 Chapter 2 Module Description Tones and Announcements Server Module Overview FAIL ACTIVE TAS Figure 2-1. Tones and Announcements Server Module Connection Gateway API Support of the CAS Signaling Function Using the Connection Gateway Application Programming Interface (API), any external call controller (a connection gateway such as a Lucent Softswitch device or ConnectStar™ system) can control a PSAX system, using nonnative ATM networking protocols. Rather than develop interworking functions in each PSAX system for every different signaling protocol, this common Connection Gateway API maps connection setup and tear down mechanisms from ISDN, SS7, CAS, and other protocols to ATM, allowing interworking of these major signaling protocols. Connection Gateway API Developer’s Guide The PacketStar® Connection Gateway API Customer Implementation Guide provides guidance on the Connection Gateway API and channel-associated signaling (CAS) functionality in the PSAX 4500, PSAX 2300, and PSAX 1250 Multiservice Media Gateways. The CAS extension allows the call controller to manage setting up and tearing down voice or data calls interconnected to the PSAX system using traditional analog signaling methods. The PSAX system transforms the CAS trunk line and registers signaling information into Connection Gateway API messages, and sends them for processing by the call controller. Conversely, the PSAX system transforms the Connection Gateway API messages coming from the call controller to its CAS (line/register signaling) equivalent, and sends them to the CAS trunk. Once the exchange of signaling information between PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 2-2 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Chapter 2 Module Description Modules Supported the call controller, the PSAX system, and the interconnected switch (PBX, LE/PSTN) is completed, the call controller can proceed with establishing the connection to the DS3 ATM module, the Tones and Announcements Server module, the ISDN/SS7 trunk, or another CAS trunk. To support signaling systems variation, the Connection Gateway API CAS messages do not carry signaling-specific information (for example, signaling type and addressing type). Instead, the CAS signaling interface type is preconfigured using the PSAX console interface or the Connection Gateway API configuration messages. The Connection Gateway API CAS will, therefore, also provide abstraction of CAS signaling to the call controller. Connection Gateway API Implementation Guide The PacketStar® PSAX Connection Gateway Application Programming Interface (API) Customer Implementation Guide assists users in configuring voice telephony over ATM and Internet PRI offload (IPO) applications using a PacketStar PSAX 4500, PSAX 2300, PSAX 1250, or PSAX 1000 Multiservice Media Gateway and a call controller (Lucent ConnectStar™ switch or Lucent Softswitch). This guide provides a high-level overview of the application along with sample configurations, and provides references to supplemental detailed documentation. Modules Supported The features of the TAS module work in configuration with the following modules/software: • 6-Port Enhanced DS1/T1 (DS1/T1 Enh) • 6-Port Enhanced E1 (E1 Enh) • 12-Port Medium-Density DS1 module (MD DS1) • 21-Port High-Density E1 (HD E1) • 1-Port Channelized DS3 (CH DS3) • 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e • 1-Port Channelized OC-3 CES Multimode and Single-Mode • CPU3 • CPU4 • Connection Gateway API Software Features The TAS module offers these features: • TAS module can transmit tones and announcements towards the CES or ATM side • Maximum duration of a tone or announcement is 45 seconds (240Kb) • Channel Associated Signaling • Special Information Tones PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 2-3 Chapter 2 Module Description H.248 Standardized Signaling Gateway Control Protocol, Phase 3 Enhancements Special Information Tones (SIT) Telephone calls that are not completed as desired usually terminate in recorded announcements or call progress tones. A special information tone is sent to the caller in cases where neither the busy or congestion tone can give the required information for call failure. Automated detection devices cannot distinguish recorded voice from live voice answer unless a machine-detectable signal is included the recorded announcement. Defined SITs identify network-provided announcements. Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) • Supports extended super frame (ESF) CAS signaling • For each CES port, users can select from these signaling modes: ~ Loop-start, network (default) and User ~ Ground-start, network and User ~ Wink-start, 2-way and User ~ Off-premises station (OPS) Tones • Busy tone H.248 Standardized Signaling Gateway Control Protocol, Phase 3 Enhancements The following four enhancements have been added to the H.248 interface: • Continuity Test • Call Progress Tones • 10x Line Testing Enhancements • SCTP Enhancement Continuity Test Mode The PSAX system supports this package by including the Continuity Test (CT Mode) field on the following TDM-interface modules: 20N36 6-Port Enhanced DS1/T1 Multiservice 20N56 6-Port Enhanced E1 Multiservice 23N60 1-Port Channelized DS3 Multiservice 23N64 12-Port Medium-Density DS1 Multiservice 45N63 3-Port Channelized DS3/STS-1e Multiservice Protection 23N66 21-Port High-Density E1 Multiservice PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 2-4 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Chapter 2 Module Description H.248 Standardized Signaling Gateway Control Protocol, Phase 3 Enhancements In a local- and remote-end PSAX system configuration, one PSAX system acts as either the tester or testee. When the PSAX system acts as a tester or testee, the MGC in configuration with the PSAX need not know whether the nearor remote-end 4-wire or 2-wire termination. The MGC instructs the Tones and Announcements Server (TAS) module to perform different procedures according to whether there is a 2-wire or 4-wire circuit on the receiving end. Table 2-1 and Table 2-2 provide the decision matrixes the PSAX system follows in sending and receiving signals between itself and other PSAX systems or non-PSAX systems. By setting "Mode = LoopBack" on the MGC, the PSAX system can also perform the testee role of the continuity test if the other end is a 4-wire circuit. This can be done without the TAS module and continuity test package. The PSAX system always operates in the 4-wire mode. The signaling tones (dial, ringing, busy, congestion, special information, caller waiting) are generated from the TAS module in CAS mode in connection with the MGC. All other signals, such as continuity check and the line tests (102, 105, and 108), are generated from the TAS module in TAS mode. Continuity Test Table Table 2-1. PSAX System as Tester (ct/ct) If the testee is... then the PSAX system transmits... and the PSAX system expects to receive... 4-wire a 2010-Hz signal a 2010-Hz signal 2-wire a 1780-Hz signal a 2010-Hz signal Table 2-2. Without tone generation, the PSAX system cannot play a sequential list of tones automatically. If a list of tones is to be played, the MGC sends a message to the PSAX system to play one tone at a time. However, for call progress tones this is not necessary. Of the four optional parameters for signal (Stream, SignalType, Duration, and NotifyCompletion), only NotifyCompletion is supported. The KeepActive flag is not supported. The following parameters in NotifyCompletion are supported: • TimeOut (time out) • IntByEvent (interrupt by event) • IntBySigDescr (interrupt by signal descriptor) PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 2-5 Chapter 2 Module Description H.248 Standardized Signaling Gateway Control Protocol, Phase 3 Enhancements • OtherReason (other) These parameters correspond to the termination method in the signal completion event as TO, EV, SD and NC, respectively. Call progress tones are only supported on TDM terminations. Tones Supplied by the TAS Module The PSAX system specifies a tone length of 64 seconds when it requests the TAS module to play a tone of the OnOff type. This mechanism is used to prevent TAS module resources from being occupied unnecessarily. For a tone of the brief type, the PSAX system specifies a tone length of up to 64 seconds, which indicates to the TAS module that the tone stops when it is played out. The TAS module notifies the CPUn module under the following conditions: • The tone times out. Either the playing of an onOff tone reaches the specified tone length, or the playing of a brief tone is completed. • The playing of the tone is interrupted before it times out. For instance, the DS0 might become out of service while the tone is being played. The playing of a dial tone stops immediately if a digit is detected. Table 2-3. PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 2-6 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Chapter 2 Module Description H.248 Standardized Signaling Gateway Control Protocol, Phase 3 Enhancements The definition of the H.248 Call Progress Tones Generator Package (Package cg) is directly based on ITU-T E.180/Q.35. As E.180 loosely defines physical characteristics for each tone, such as frequencies and cadence, implementers are free to select any values for the physical characteristics as long as they are within the "recommended range." The call progress tone physical characteristics defined in the commercial spec for the PSAX TAS module are based on TIA/EIA-464-B, which does not include specifications for all the tones in call progress tone package. Another common resource is Telcordia SR-2275, in which the definitions of call progress tones are further based on Telcordia GR-506-CORE. For those tones defined in 464-B and SR-2275, physical characteristics are more rigidly specified. Table 2-4 lists all call progress tones in Package cg and whether their physical characteristics are defined in E.180, 464-B, or SR-2275. Table 2-4. SCTP Enhancement The following enhancements are supported in the PSAX system: • Added features for SCTP Security: ~ a data chunk verification using verification tags ~ cookie authentication using MD5 encryption algorithm or other cryptographic hashing algorithms. ~ SCTP checksum specification support • SCTP User Configuration: ~ Support for more user set/get options on the PSAX system side of the MGC. The user can now change the default for: • incoming stream • outgoing steam PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 2-7 Chapter 2 Module Description Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) Functions • peer port number • peer addresses • local port number • local addresses ~ Provide user performance statistics. • Added support for SCTP Bundling and Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Discovery: ~ Data chunk bundling (multiple chunks in one message). Currently, supports bundling in the receive side. The PSAX SCTP implementation does not bundle on the transmit side. ~ MTU discovery. Currently, the PSAX MTU is statistically set and the SCTP does not support MTU discovery using Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) Functions Maintenance access to the TAS modules is consistent with the existing console, SNMP and Telnet interfaces. The TAS module requires Navis® EMS-PSAX and NavisXtend™ network management support. The priority of this support is for the Navis® EMS-PSAX network management support, as the NavisXtend™ network is an integration of Navis® EMS-PSAX, and is targeted to service providers. Hardware Features The Tones and Announcements Server module has 32 digital signal processors. All TAS modules connect to the CPUn module and other modules by a backplane connection. The number of Tones and Announcements Server modules supported by the PSAX 4500, PSAX 2300, PSAX 1250, and PSAX 1000 systems depends on how your network configuration is affecting PSAX system CPU memory availability. Note: Before any announcements can be played on calls, your CGAPI and call controller must be configured with the PSAX and the TAS module announcements. See your vendor’s call controller literature and the PacketStar Connection Gateway Application Programming Interface (API) Developer’s Guide, available on the PacketStar PSAX Multiservice Media Gateways Product Information Library. 1. Use the FTP Announcement Configuration procedure under the Accessing the FTP Announcement Configuration heading to transfer the uncompressed announcements using FTP from your PC, or from where your announcement files are located, to the PSAX CPU /scsi/announce directory. All files are 64-Kbps uncompressed, mu-law or A-law, PCM, raw data format. The Tones and Announcements Server module does not support WAVE files. 2. Using the Compress Announcement file menu option, complete the Compressing Announcement Files procedure to compress all announcements you want to be accessible for calls if needed. Uncompressed voice files use the format “Vxxx.xk”. For example, V001.8k is Voice File #1 at 8k compression. After the file is compressed, the file name appears as “CVxxx.xk” in the file directory. The action of compressing a file causes the original uncompressed source file on the PSAX CPUn to be overwritten with the compressed file. If the Tones and Announcements Server module needs to play back the file, the PSAX CPUn sends the compressed file to the Tones and Announcements Server module cache, from where it plays back, uncompressing as it plays. Accessing the TAS Module System-wide Configuration Options To access the TAS Module System-wide Configuration window, perform the following procedure. Begin 1 From the Console Site Specific Menu, select the Site Specific Configuration option and press Enter. The Site-Specific Menu is displayed (see Figure 3-3). During call setup, any switch along the path can request a continuity check on the connection to the next switch in the path. Alternatively, any voice switch can be requested to respond to a continuity check from a switch before it in the path. PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 A-2 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Appendix A Reference Information Tones and Announcements Server Module Test Descriptions The test request can be initiated by a call controller, such as the Softswitch. The mechanism used to request a continuity check during call setup is in the SS7 message. The IAM issued by a switch contains the required coding to indicate that a continuity check is requested on the circuit to be used for the call. The receiving switch places the circuit into loop back and the originating switch attaches a transceiver with a test tone to the circuit. On successful completion of the test, a Continuity Test (COT) message is sent to the next switch within 100 msec and the call setup signaling continues. In the event of a continuity test failure, a reset is initiated and handled in accordance with Telcordia GR-246-CORE. Continuity checks are done using a single frequency or two frequencies. • In the single-frequency test, a single tone (2010 Hz, or 1780 Hz) is placed on the channel. The remote end of the channel is looped back and a detector is used to detect the return frequency. • In the two-frequency test, one frequency (2010 Hz) is sent and the second frequency (1780 Hz) is used for the response. In this case, the channel is not looped back. Instead both ends of the channel must connect to transceivers that are able to detect and generate the required tone. Trunking voice traffic over ATM (VTOA) can increases trunk efficiency by 30 percent by using fewer trunk groups and thus, fewer number of trunks. Improvements to operational efficiency is estimated to be 50 percent by means of more economical trunk provisioning, and fewer trunks to maintain, monitor, forecast and engineer. Type 102 Continuity Test Overview This test is based on ANSI T1.207. • At the direction of a call controller, such as the Softswitch, the module generates a 0.0 dBm0, synthesized, 1004 Hz (milliwatt) digitally encoded test signal generation and termination. • At the direction of a call controller, such as the Softswitch, the module generates a 0.0 dBm0, synthesized, 1004 Hz sine wave, digitally encoded reference signal that provides a sine wave for analog testing. Type 105 Continuity Test Overview The automatic transmission measuring test line provides far-end access to a responder and permits two-way loss and noise measurement to be made on trunks from a near-end office equipped with a remote office test line (ROTL) and responder or other suitable control device. The Type 105 test line is used by the Automatic Transmission Measurement System (ATMS) and the Automatic Trunk Testing System and is capable of participating in two-way loss and noise measurements, gain-slope measurements (loss at three frequencies), and return loss measurements. The Softswitch or other connection gateway may provide a parking arrangement for calls it is unable to service while busy on another call. (The PSAX System does not provide call parking). The module supports these features of the test, based on ANSI T1.207: PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 A-3 Appendix A Reference Information Tones and Announcements Server Module Test Descriptions • Tests are initiated by the call controller, or any user interface selection • When the test line is seized, an off-hook supervisory signal (minimum of 300 msec) followed by a test progress tone (TPT) is returned to the originating office. (TPT equals 2225 Hz ± 25 Hz at -10 dBm ± 0.5 dBm) • If the responder is idle, the chain circuit operates and connects the test line to the responder after a minimum of 900 ms of TPT. • TPT is removed when the responder is attached or the control device disconnects. • If the responder is busy, or other test lines in preferential positions in the access circuit apply, test progress tones are sent back to the originating end to indicate that the call is parked and awaiting cut-through to the responder. • When the access circuit has progressed to the test line under consideration, the test line is cut-through and the test progress tone is removed. • During parking, the TPT is sent on the channel under test. • When the module can service the test, transmission of the TPT ceases and the multi-frequency signal indicative of the test to perform is received on the channel under testing. • The appropriate test signal shall be transmitted for a predetermined period of time. After expiration, the signal received on the channel under test is measured. Type 108 Continuity Test Overview The digital noninverting loopback test line provides for digital testing capabilities between digital exchanges, or digital PBXs, or both. The digital loopback test line provides a dialable, four-wire test line capability; it consists of circuitry that accepts and loops back received octets, which are transmitted with the positions of the bits within the octets preserved. Thus, the most significant bit of the retransmitted octet corresponds to the most significant bit of the received octet. This requirement provides for a noninverting loopback test line capable of passing 56 Kbps clear signals. In this manner, all digital services can pass digital test signals through the test line. The test line is used primarily to measure the integrity of digital data transmitted between digital exchanges and/or PBXs, and ISDN B- or D- channels from the customer interface to the switch. It is intended to be used in conjunction with a suitable digital signal generator and test receiver, and can be used to measure the continuity and integrity of digital data between digital switches and PBXs. The test line can also be used to test lines from customer provided equipment (CPE) to the Bellcore client company (BCC) switch. These lines can be either trunk lines or ISDN lines. With simple dial-up access, the test line is intended to be used with a suitable digital signal generate and compare function and will allow either a BCC customer or BCC maintenance personnel to perform data error tests. The TAS module supports these tests, based on GR-822-CORE standard: • The digital circuit loopback test line provides dialable, 4-wire test line capability and includes circuitry that accepts binary signals and loops back received octets. Table A-5. PSAX System-Supported Quality of Service Categories ATM Service Category Description Constant Bit Rate (CBR) This service offers consistent delay predictability. CBR is used for applications such as circuit emulation, voice, and video. Real Time Variable Bit Rate (VBR-rt) This service offers low delay variance, but requires access to a variable amount of network bandwidth. VBR-rt is used for applications such as packet video and voice. Non-Real Time Variable This service allows delay variance between the delivery of cells. VBR-nrt Bit Rate (VBR-nrt) is used for data applications that have potentially bursty traffic characteristics. Guaranteed Frame Rate This service allows delay variance and offers a minimum cell rate guaran(GFR) tee. When used with frame-based data encapsulated in AAL5 PDUs, it provides frame-based cell discard. GFR is used for frame relay or ethernet over ATM. Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) This service allows for best-effort transport by the network. Cells are transported by the network whenever bandwidth is available and the user presents traffic. PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 A-10 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Appendix A Reference Information ATM Traffic Descriptors Priority of ATM Service Categories in the PSAX System The attributes of the categories of service supported by the PSAX system software are identified in Table A-6. The service examples in this table are intended simply as illustrations; you should choose your service category based on your network applications supported by the PSAX system. The flexibility of the PSAX system allows you to tailor the system based on the required service applications by selecting the appropriate connection configuration selection field value. Table A-6. The traffic descriptor specifies which traffic parameters are used for traffic control. It also determines the PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 255-700-589 Release 10.0.0 A-11 Appendix A Reference Information ATM Traffic Descriptors number and type of cells that are admitted into a congested queue, and whether high-priority cells are tagged as low-priority cells when traffic exceeds the traffic parameter thresholds. Connections Supporting Traffic Descriptors The traffic descriptors used in the PSAX system software are supported for the following types of connections: • AAL2 Trunk Connection (PVC only) • ATM-to-ATM VCC/VPC SVC/SVP • ATM-to-ATM VCC PVC • ATM-to-ATM VPC PVC • Bridge-to-ATM VCC PVC • Circuit Emulation-to-ATM VCC PVC • Frame Relay-to-ATM VCC PVC • In-band ATM PVC • VBR-to-ATM VCC PVC Traffic Descriptors Supported The types of ATM traffic descriptors supported in the PSAX system are as follows: • Best effort (Best-effort) This traffic descriptor allows the system to attempt to send all cells in a “best effort” fashion, without specifying traffic parameters, similar to the AQueMan algorithm. The PSAX system might drop some or all cells during congestion. • Best effort with tagging (Best-effort-tag) This traffic descriptor allows the system to tag all CLP=0 (high priority) cells to change them to CLP=1 (low priority) cells, and then attempt to send all cells in a “best effort” fashion, without specifying any other traffic parameters, similar to the AQueMan algorithm. The network might drop some or all cells during congestion. • One bucket, with no tagging for cells with both CLP bit=0 and CLP bit=1 (1B-NT-0+1) This traffic descriptor uses the parameters one bucket, no tagging, cell loss priority (CLP)=0+1 cells (high and low priority). The PSAX system ignores the CLP bit value and drops all cells violating the value set for the peak cell rate (PCR). • Two buckets, with no tagging for cells with both CLP bit=0 and CLP bit=1 (2B-NT-0+1-0+1) This traffic descriptor uses the parameters two buckets, no tagging, CLP=0+1 cells (high and low priority) for bucket 1, and CLP=0+1 cells (high and low priority) for bucket 2. The PSAX system ignores the CLP bit value for cells passing into bucket 1 and drops all cells violating the value PacketStar® PSAX Tones and Announcements Server Module User Guide, Issue 1 A-12 Release 10.0.0 255-700-589 Appendix A Reference Information ATM Traffic Descriptors set for the PCR. The remainder of the cells are passed to bucket 2. The PSAX system ignores the CLP bit value for cells passing into bucket 2, and drops all cells violating the value set for the sustainable cell rate (SCR). • Two buckets, with no tagging for cells with both CLP bit=0+1 and CLP bit=0 (2B-NT-0+1-0) This traffic descriptor uses the parameters two buckets, no tagging, CLP=0+1 cells (high and low priority) for bucket 1, and CLP=0 cells (high priority) for bucket 2. For bucket 1, the PSAX system ignores the CLP bit value for cells passing into bucket 1 and drops all cells violating the value set for the PCR. For bucket 2, the system takes one of the following actions: ~ When the connection is configured for variable bit rate (VBR) traffic, the PSAX system drops all CLP=0 cells violating the value set for the SCR in bucket 2. ~ When the connection is configured for constant bit rate (CBR) traffic, the PSAX system drops all CLP=0 cells violating the value set for the PCR in bucket 2. • Two buckets, for cells with CLP bit=0 and CLP bit=0 (2B-NT-0+1-0) This traffic descriptor uses the parameters two buckets, tagging, CLP=0+1 cells (high and low priority) for bucket 1, and CLP=0 cells (high priority) for bucket 2. For bucket 1, the PSAX system ignores the CLP bit value for cells passing into bucket 1 and drops all cells violating the value set for the PCR. For bucket 2, the system takes one of the following actions: ~ When the connection is configured for variable bit rate (VBR) traffic, the PSAX system tags all CLP=0 cells violating the value set for the SCR to CLP=1 in bucket 2. ~ When the connection is configured for constant bit rate (CBR) traffic, the PSAX system tags all CLP=0 cells violating the value set for the PCR to CLP=1 in bucket 2. The network then might drop some or all cells during congestion.
