PACT Video: From your iPhone to USB with iMovie ‘11 Cahill Lab Burk Hall 319 Ph No: (415) 338-3423 College of Education Computer Lab Burk Hall 214 Ph No: (415) 338-6364 POETS (415) 338-7638 Revised 04/17/2014 NOTE: The import, editing, and exporting process can be a lengthy process. Please expect to spend at least two hours getting your footage from the camera to a flashdrive. Be aware that capturing from your camera to the computer is a real-time process; ten minutes of footage will take ten minutes to import. CREATE YOUR OWN FOLDER Ü Macintosh HD > Users > Student > Movies > Create Folder w/ your First and Last Name (eg. “John_Smith - PACT”). You will save all of your footage and iMovie HD files here. CONNECTING iPHONE TO COMPUTER IN CAHILL LAB You must provide your own cable to connect to our computers via USB. Ü Connect your iPhone/ iPad’s cable to the back of the computer. Ü Open iPhoto. Ü Click on your iPhone/ iPad under devices on the left hand side. Ü Select your desired footage and click IMPORT SELECTED. Ü Open Macintosh HD > Movies > Your Folder. Ü Drag and Drop your imported footage into Your Folder. EXPORTING VIDEO FROM iMOVIE ‘11 Ü Open iMovie ’11 by clicking the iMovie icon (a fivepointed star with a camera in the middle) in the dock at the bottom of the screen. Ü Go to the top menu bar, under FILE select NEW PROJECT. Ü At the Create Project screen, choose “No Theme”, enter your PROJECT NAME and select your ASPECT RATIO (either STANDARD 4:3 or WIDESCREEN 16:9). YOU MUST USE THE SAME FORMAT ON THE CAMERA AND THE COMPUTER! If you are not sure what aspect ratio your video is in, ask a lab attendant for help. Ü Click CREATE to create your project. Ü Click FILE. In the dropdown menu click IMPORT. Click on Movies. Ü Find your footage and select it. Once you’ve selected your footage, o Click on “Create a new Event” and name it. o Click “Optimize Video” and ensure “Full – Original Size” is selected in the dropdown menu. o Click on “Copy Files”. Ü Click IMPORT. Ü Once the video has been imported, iMovie will bring you back to the main interface. iMovie organizes all footage into its EVENT LIBRARY interface. Your particular event should be visible, listed next to a purple star. Ü Clicking on your event reveals your video as individual clips in the lower right interface window. EDITING VIDEO IN iMOVIE ‘11 Ü Looking at your clips you will notice that iMovie shows multiple thumbnails (mini snapshots) of each imported clip, rather than just one. To change the view to just one thumbnail, move the slider at the bottom right area of the program from default to All. Ü Now, when you view your clips, there is just one thumbnail per clip. Ü As you move your cursor over each clip in the interface, iMovie will “Scrub” through the clip, previewing the video in the large display window AND in the small thumbnail. If you have lengthy clips, this is a good way of quickly navigating through it all. At any point in the “Scrubbing” process you can play the clip in real time by pressing SPACEBAR. Ü Once you have finished viewing your footage and are ready to make selections, “scrub” through clip (by running the cursor over it) until you find your desired starting point. Now, slowly drag your cursor forward, through the clip. A yellow window will appear, representing your selection. As you drag, a counter will appear, signifying the current time length of the selection. Once you have reached the desired ending point, stop clicking and dragging. Ü Now drag and drop your selected clip up to the PROJECT WINDOW. Repeat this process with subsequent clips if necessary. With your clip(s) in the PROJECT WINDOW you are now ready to export your footage out of iMovie. SHARING/EXPORTING IN iMOVIE ‘11 Ü From the SHARE menu, select EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Ü This will bring up a Save exported file as… window which is where you tell it where to save and also where you choose the settings for your final clip. Ü At EXPORT: pull down menu and choose Movie to Quicktime Movie Ü At USE: pull-down menu…. • Students uploading to Taskstream: Use the “BROADBAND-HIGH” setting. If resulting file comes out too large (>500 MB), try BROADBAND-MEDIUM. Ü Ü Ü Ü Ü Click on “Options…”. This will bring up a “Movie Settings” window. Click on “Size...”. This will bring up a “Export Size Settings” window. At “Dimensions”: pull down menu and choose “Current”. Also make sure that “Deinterlace Source Video” is checked. Then click “OK”. On the “Movie Settings” window, click ok. Ü Press SAVE to begin compression. Compressing may take several minutes to an hour depending on the size of the video. SAVING YOUR WORK TO USB DEVICE OR EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE Ü Locate your exported video in Finder (it is probably on the Desktop if you did not specify another location). Ü Drag and drop the exported video into your USB Device or External Hard Drive or upload to Google Drive. ***NOTE – This process can take longer than you think, so please be patient*** If you are working in the Cahill Lab, you may save your work to the desktop. If you are working in the GCOE Computer Lab, you are not allowed to save onto the desktop. As a general rule it is always best to save your work onto your own media. Your final output video will be quite small and will fit on a USB Flash Drive with at least 100MB of free space available. The iMovie working project files may take up as much as 200MB per minute. That means that a 30-minute clip will take up 6GB but the easiest solution would be to have a USB Flash Drive with 6-8GB free space available.
