3 Paper Label Material 7109 Technical Data Product Description May, 2002 3M™ Label Material 7109 white semi-gloss paper with 3M™ Adhesive 1100 is designed to adhere to wet or damp surfaces. This adhesive can absorb a thin film of moisture to form an aggressive bond to the substrate where most pressure sensitive adhesives would not adhere. This unique acrylic adhesive allows label application to surfaces contaminated with water and has good adhesion to a variety of surfaces. The facestock and adhesive are considered repulpable by TAPPI useful Method 213. The liner is not repulpable. Construction Typical Physical Properties and Performance Characteristics Facestock Adhesive Liner 3.1 mil (79 microns) 60# semi-gloss litho 0.9 mil (23 microns) 1100 wet surface acrylic 2.5 mil (64 microns) 43# semi-bleached Note: The following technical information and data should be considered representative or typical only and should not be used for specification purposes. Conformability Conformable to simple curved surfaces with a diameter greater than one inch. Printing The semi-gloss litho facestock provides good printability with solvent based flexo inks. Water based flexo inks are not recommended. Depending on the application, label put up, and the printing process, other limitations may apply, such as EDP formats and clear-coats. Thermal transfer printing is possible using wax ribbons. Temperature Range -40°F (-40°C) to 200°F (93°C) Minimum Application Temperature 50°F (10°C) Repulpability Non-printed, die cut labels (excluding release liner) are repulpable according to TAPPI specs. Various inks and varnishes may not be repulpable. Customer should evaluate finished label format for repulpability. Dispensing Manual or automatic labelers. Humidity Resistance: 1 day at 90°F (32°C) and 90% relative humidity: Application Ideas no change • Provides secure permanent or temporary product identification • Brand identification, promotional labels, or bar code labels where containers or overwraps are wet from cleaning or condensation • Paper converting in-process labels where repulpability may be required Application Techniques Designed primarily for solvent based flexographic printing as water based inks are not recommended. When flexographic printed, clear-coats are generally recommended for primary package labels. Due to the chemistry of this adhesive, clear-coats become mandatory and UV clear-coats are preferred based on current experience. Since this adhesive will absorb moisture, some adhesive growth resulting in ooze can be expected when exposed to moisture or humidity during processing, application, or storage. -2- 3M™ Paper Label Material 7109 Application Techniques (continued) Facestock and adhesive are considered repulpable, but the liner is not due to the silicone coating. When “EDP” formats are desired (fan-folded, continuous business form labels), 3M recommends that die-cut, unprinted label form sets be specified to applications requiring repulpability. Due to the chemistry of this adhesive, flexo inks will become tacky with age which will cause label blocking and poor printer feed. This format would be imprinted only via dot-matrix ribbon printers. Flexographic inks and flexo or UV clear-coats may affect the repulpability of the completed label. 3M strongly suggests repulpability tests be run on the label prior to significant purchase especially if inks or clear-coats are to be added to the label design. Product can be removed during typical cycles or commercial jet spray washing machines. For best performance, rolls of stock and converted labels should be stored in sealed low density polyethylene (2-4 mils) to preserve the freshness and functionability of the unique adhesive. This material is not recommended for applications where the product will be immersed in water, solvents, etc. Shelf Life Two years from date of manufacture of product when properly stored at 72°F (22°C) and 50% relative humidity.
