PAWTUCKET (76-58) at SCRANTON/WB (68-65) 5:35 pm (DH)
Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Tony Pena, Jr. (9-5, 3.46) vs. Scranton/WB Yankees LHP Manny Banuelos (1-2, 3.86) Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Alex Wilson (0-0, 4.50) vs. Scranton/WB Yankees RHP Dellin Betances (0-1, 5.00) One Up With One Week To Go – The 1st-place Pawtucket Red Sox – looking to capture their first IL North title since 2003 – conclude a 4-game series vs. the Scranton/WB Yankees with a doubleheader tonight at 5:35 pm at PNC Field in Moosic, PA. On Friday, the two teams played a doubleheader to avoid playing on Sunday afternoon when Hurricane Irene was expected to produce heavy rain in Pennsylvania, and the PawSox swept the twinbill 6-1 and 7-3. Saturday’s game was rained out, leading to tonight’s twinbill. The PawSox have a one game lead in the IL North over Lehigh Valley with 8 games to go. Following this series, Pawtucket heads to Rochester for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday. After a day off on Thursday, the PawSox conclude the regular season with 4 games at home against Scranton/WB (Friday/Saturday) and Rochester (Sunday/Monday). Magic Numbers – The PawSox have these magic numbers to guarantee finishing ahead of the following IL teams that are still in playoff contention: Lehigh Valley (7), Gwinnett (6), Indianapolis (3), Scranton/WB (2), Louisville (1). Any combination of Pawtucket wins and losses by those teams, would clinch a superior finish by the PawSox. Due to rainouts, the PawSox will only play 142 out of a scheduled 144 games this year. If Pawtucket finishes tied for first in the IL North with Lehigh Valley, the PawSox would win the division by percentage points. Road Runners – The PawSox have the best road record in the league at 41-26. Pawtucket has won 11 of 14 on the road and 18 of their last 26 away games. The Sox are a season-high 15-games over .500 on the road. The Sox have 4 road games remaining and have tied the club-record for Most Road Games Won in a season (the 1994 & 2003 PawSox both won 41 away games). Back on Top – Pawtucket fell to 2nd-place and -1 GB of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs last Wednesday (8/24) before climbing back into first place the following day. The PawSox were up by 2-games on August 15 which marked their largest 1st-place lead in more than three years (since July 20 of 2008). The Sox reached first place for the first time since April 22nd on August 7th. Highest Plateau - The Sox have equaled their season-high of 18-games over .500 and have gone 44-26 since falling to .500 on June 14th at 32-32. At that point, Pawtucket trailed Lehigh Valley by 8 ½ games in the IL North.
