AN1001 - How to install a compact system Paxton Access What is a compact system? A compact system is the simplest access control system available from Paxton Access. In its simplest form it comprises a power supply, a compact reader and a lock. The reader contains all of the electronics for the system and sits between the power supply and the lock, allowing the lock to open only when the correct token is presented (PROXIMITY), card is swiped (CARDLOCK) or code is entered (TOUCHLOCK).
What are the benefits of a compact system? The main benefit of a compact system is the simplicity of the installation; only three pairs of wires are required on a compact reader, one for connecting the power, one for connecting the lock and one for the connection of an exit button or time clock. Whilst being extremely easy to install compact systems still offer a wide range of programming options providing the capability for simple voiding of lost or stolen cards, support for fail open and fail closed locks and an adjustable door open time as standard. Additional functions for CARDLOCK and PROXIMITY systems can be programmed using a function card pack, which can be purchased separately. All TOUCHLOCK functions are accessed via the keypad using a programming menu. All of the programming is done at the reader, enabling the user to adjust the system settings and access privileges quickly and easily. Having all of the electronics contained within the reader does have the disadvantage of reduced security. By removing the reader from the wall an intruder can gain direct access to the system control wires. This makes compact readers appropriate only for internal doors or for use on doors where additional security is provided when the building is unoccupied. If higher security access control is required the Switch2 controller should be considered, as all of the control electronics are located within the secured building.
Installation 5m of cable are provided so that each pair or wires can be routed directly to its required location without the need for extending. Power connection - all compact readers require a 12V dc power supply unit. Paxton kits are provided with a compact switch mode power supply, which provides a 12V dc output. Alternatively, for more security conscious installations, a power supply with battery back up can be used. Lock wires - The lock wires from a compact reader provide 12V dc to the electric lock. The lock output is polarity conscious. The lock output from the reader does not use a relay, this limits the amount of current that compact readers can provide. If more powerful locks need to be switched the Switch2 controller should be considered as an alternative.

Exit wires - The exit wires can be used for a number of different applications, connected to a simple “push to make” button they will release the door lock for the door open time. Alternatively, a time clock with a voltage free changeover contact (e.g. central heating timer) can be used to hold a door unlocked during the programmed time periods. On CARDLOCK and PROXIMITY systems a time clock can be used to change the validity of groups of users at different times of the day. To do this the “Time zones” card is used at the reader to change the function of the exit wires. The two states of the time clock can then be set using the coloured zone cards to define which coloured cards are allowed

access at the door during the two time clock modes. The exit wires can also be left disconnected if none of these functions are required. Once each wire has been correctly connected the system can be switched on ready for programming.
