● What would happen if the hard disk on your process control system computers failed tomorrow? ● How long would it take you to get your system back up and running again? ● Where are those tape backups? ● Have you ever tried to restore a system from a tape backup? The data held on the hard disk of your computer systems is now playing a vital role in process control systems. In the event of a computer or hard disk failure, it is essential that you have the resources and plans in place to recover this information. This is where Eurotherm’s PC Recovery service can help. What is a PC Recovery Backup? A pc recovery backup is a CD backup taken of your computer system (T3500s, Eurotherm Suite Operation Server etc) which in the event of loss of the hard-disk or computer allows recovery of system with a minimum of downtime and user intervention. Why create a PC Recovery Backup? ● Ensure system can be recovered in the event of computer or hard disk failure. ● Ensure system can be recovered in the event of fire or theft. ● Ensure system can be recovered in the event of accidental or malicious corruption (Destructive Virus infection) ● Backups on CD are more reliable than tapes and easier to store. ● PC recovery backups minimise downtime during creation. ● Minimal downtime during recovery ● Minimise any losses ● Recovery process is simple, reliable and fast. • DATA MANAGEMENT • CONTROLS • PROCESS AUTOMATION• LIFETIME How does PC Backup Differ from a normal backup? A PC recovery backup is an image backup of the disk. The backup is an identical copy of all data stored on disk. To ensure that no cached data (file data temporally held in memory by the operating system) is missed, the backup is taken whilst the Operating System is not running. It does not require re-installation of the operating system and applications before the disk is recovered. Normal backups taken using tape or zip drives require the operating system to be running whilst the backup takes place. Therefore, the backup is normally just a copy of the data files held on the disk. Operating system software, cached data and currently open files will be missed. With a traditional file backup the operating system and application must first be installed before the data can be recovered. A time consuming and error prone process. Also, where are all those operating system and application CDs and Licenses? How is a PC Recovery backup created? The backup is taken using a CD writer on the engineer’s laptop computer. The laptop is attached to your computer via a temporary network connection. Your computer is then booted from a floppy disk containing the pc recovery application. An image of each of your disks is then created on the engineer’s laptop, where they will be burnt onto a CD whilst your computer is rebooted back to its normal operation. How much does it cost and how long will it take? ● Creating a backup of each PC takes about four hours, however your PC should only be unavailable, typically, for about two hours. ● PC recovery backups (and any resultant recovery) are inclusive on equipment covered by 5 Star Support agreements. The backups are normally taken during the annual preventative maintenance visit. ● On equipment covered by 3 Star Support Agreements, a basic charge per PC is made, which includes any time necessary to restore the data. The response of the engineer to restore the system will be based on your support agreement ● On systems not covered by a Support Agreement there is a charge per PC, and for up to one year, includes any time necessary to restore the data. If a system needs to be recovered a field service engineer will be made available the next suitable business day. ● Eurotherm recommend that a PC recovery backup is created at least once per year and whenever either; any significant changes are made to application or additional software is installed.
