More importantly, these tools are specially designed for debugging compliance failures, allowing the engineers to quickly find the root cause of serial data problems. Complete Link Testing SDAIII-CompleteLinQ includes multilane serial data, eye, jitter, noise and crosstalk analysis, and integrates the Doctor™ II toolkit for equalization and channel/fixture de-embedding and emulation. These features are extremely useful for PCI Express 3.0 during channel emulation, simulating the effects of transmitter and receiver equalization and analyzing multiple transmitter channels simultaneously. Multi-Point Simultaneous Analysis SDAIII-CompleteLinQ is capable of analyzing multiple differential signals. Users can choose to analyze the transmitted signals at different stages of the transmission path, or analyze multiple transmitter channels of an Tx Rx Fixture Product Under Test add-in card or system board. For example, Lane 1 can show the raw capture of a Tx output, Lane 2 can show the effects of a long compliance channel on the signal after embedding the compliance channel, Lane 3 can show the effects of CTLE after emulating the high loss compliance channel, Lane 4 can show the effects of DFE after CTLE. In addition to testing multiple transmitter channels simultaneously, SDAIII has the deepest analysis toolbox for rapidly pinpointing sources of jitter and crosstalk, including dual-Dirac jitter and noise measurements, tracks, histograms and spectra. Plots are displayed using LaneScape Comparison Mode, a unique display capability that compares results from 1, 2 or all lanes at a time. technologies can be confident that WaveMaster 8 Zi-A will support 4th generation technologies in the future. Investment Protection QPHY-PCIE3-TX-RX uses all of the powerful oscilloscope features to perform the transmitter compliance tests as described by the PCI Express 3.0 specifications. The SDA 8 Zi-A Series of oscilloscopes provides the best asset investment protection available. Engineers working on 3rd generation Transmitter Compliance Testing When you add QualiPHY PCI Express 3.0 (QPHY-PCIE3-TX-RX) to the SDA 8 Zi-A oscilloscope, you have the ideal PCI Express 3.0 Compliance Test Instrument. QPHY-PCIE3-Tx-Rx is an automated compliance test package for PCI Express 3.0 transmitter compliance testing. It provides connection diagrams to ensure the proper setup for the required measurements, automates the oscilloscope for performing these measurements, and provides a comprehensive report of results including screenshots. Using the PeRT3 Phoenix for Transmitter Testing Transmitter link equalization response test requires the test instrument to handshake with the DUT in the protocol layer to test the DUT’s response to different equalization setting requests. Teledyne LeCroy PeRT3 Phoenix is specifically designed to address this requirement for PCI Express 3.0. 4 eceiverTest ion Test S-parameter and TDR Receiver Compliance Testing The PeRT (Protocol-enabled Receiver and Transmitter Tolerance Tester) fills the space between physical layer test and protocol test, providing a new and more intelligent capability for performance testing of receivers and transmitters. The PeRT 3 Phoenix is a new addition to the PeRT 3 family of products designed to address PCI Express 3.0 test requirements. 3 In order to meet the increasingly complex designs of today’s serial data receivers, the PeRT 3 Phoenix expands the bit rate range up to 8.5 Gb/s and offers new signal stress sources and built-in three tap de-emphasis control to address new serial data standards. At the same time, Phoenix continues to focus on protocol awareness to meet the need to communicate with the Device Under Test (DUT) into proper test modes and train the DUT’s receiver equalization setting prior to performing receiver jitter tolerance testing. Complete Compliance Test Environment Receiver testing is a critical area for PCI Express 3.0 Compliance. The PeRT 3 Phoenix is designed to test the receiver under conditions of proper equalization training, by performing loopback initialization and by introducing different stress types. Because the system combines protocol awareness with complete stress jitter profile, the PeRT 3 Phoenix has revolutionized the receiver testing architecture and has helped to define the PCI Express 3.0 compliance testing methodology. Complete Characterization in Development The biggest challenge for receiver compliance testing for PCI Express 3.0 is how the receiver performs dynamic equalization training of both the receiver equalization parameters and the proper selection of transmitter equalization presets. The PeRT 3 Protocol Test Phoenix can generate both 8b/10b and 128b/130b encoded data to establish PCI Express 3.0 connectivity, and can perform transmitter equalization preset negotiation while the receiver optimizes the receiver equalization parameters. The PeRT 3 Phoenix satisfies the 500 ns timing requirement for preset response and thus makes this instrument the perfect tool for validation and characterization of the dynamic equalization design. Calibrating the Jitter Output of the Phoenix Receiver test specifications require calibration of the jitter output sources for the test instrument. When using the PeRT 3 in conjunction with an SDA 8 Zi-A oscilloscope, this calibration process can be fully automated through the QPHY-PCIe3-TX-RX software option. Connection diagram for Receiver Compliance Testing 5 Transmitter Test Measure transmitter links equalization response time by requesting Preset change in Phase II of LTSSM using the PeRT3 and tracking the upstream and downstream protocol response using Protosync. 6 Receiver Test Transmitter Link Equalizati and Re eceiverTest ion Test S-parameter and TDR Protocol Test Tools That Bridge Physical Layer and Link Layer What is Link Equalization? Link equalization as specified in PCI Express 3.0 consists of transmitter equalization through a 3 tap FIR filter and receiver equalization through CTLE and DFE filters. During link equalization training, the 3 tap FIR filter parameters can be recalled by presets or specific cursor values of de-emphasis and preshoot. Then for each setting of TXEQ, the receiver will adjust CTLE and DFE parameters for maximum eye opening. Due to the dynamic nature of the transmission path between endpoint and the root-complex, link equalization training takes place every time a system powers up so a different set of TXEQ and RXEQ value can be selected for different combinations of system boards and add-in cards. The four phases of LTSSM allows for both the rootcomplex and the endpoint to select each other’s ideal TXEQ settings with corresponding RXEQ parameters. How to test Link Equalization During link equalization testing, the test equipment must have the ability to communicate and track the DUT through the LTSSM, while at the 3 Tap De-emphasis and Preshoot 1st Order CTLE Filter 1 Tap DFE Filter same time generate reference TXEQ signals and measure TXEQ responses from the DUT. This calls for a class of instruments that are protocol-aware and can generate TXEQ signals with jitter injection as specified by the PCI Express 3.0 specifications. The PeRT3 Phoenix was designed for these needs and is the only available test equipment with these capabilities. PeRT3 Phoenix combined with the SDA8Zi-A’s PCI Express 3.0 decode and protosync features can emulate either a system board or an add-in card to test the link training process. The transmitter of the DUT will be tested on its ability to generate requested preset and cursor values and receiver will be tested on its ability to adjust RXEQ parameters and select the proper TXEQ setting base on Bit Error Rate Ratio. The PeRT3 Phoenix establishes PCI Express 3.0 connectivity, and can perform transmitter equalization preset negotiation (satisfying preset response timing requirements) while the receiver optimizes the receiver equalization parameters. 7 Transmitter Test Key Features • Provides S-parameter measurements up to four ports • Measures from DC up to 40 GHz • One-button-press internal OSLT calibration • Analyzes in both frequency and time domain • Produces mixed-mode and single-ended simulationready S-parameters • Includes advanced de-embedding features • Inherent TDR/TDT capability and preview modes for quick checks and debugging • Available at a fraction of the cost of other network analyzer solutions 8 Receiver Test Transmitter Link Equalizat and Re Testing PCI Express 3.0 Data Channels with the Teledyne LeCroy SPARQ Transmitter, receiver, channel and crosstalk measurements can be made with the Teledyne LeCroy SPARQ Signal Integrity Network Analyzer. SPARQs are TDR/TDT-based analyzers that measure S-parameters with a single button press, and at a fraction of the cost of a VNA. Fully calibrated measurements can be made in minutes, and without any need to connect or disconnect cables to calibration kit standards or electronic calibration modules. S-parameter measurements are at the heart of the characterization and verification of passive components, and are needed to validate models and for simulations. At less than half of the price of a VNA, the SPARQ is an ideal instrument for your lab. S-parameter measurements are taken quickly and easily by utilizing the industry’s first built-in OSLT calibration kit. The SPARQ performs calibration automatically, without any user intervention, eliminating the frustration VNA users have with error-prone manual calibration procedures, while also eliminating the need for expensive “ECAL” modules. In addition to S-parameter results, SPARQ calculates step and impulse responses and Rho and Z profiles normalized to a user’s risetime. All measurements can be made in both single-ended and mixed-mode configurations, yielding differential insertion loss, crosstalk and impedance measurements needed. Results are “simulation ready”, using optional passivity, reciprocity and causality enforcements, and include a DC point, something that cannot be done with a VNA. Adaptor cables used to connect analyzer port cables to PCI Express fixtures using time-domain gating. All of these features are standard. SPARQs can de-embed adapter cables, fixtures or launches with a tion eceiver TestTest S-parameter and TDR Protocol Test Calibrated impedance measurements are available with selectable rise time. This feature provides impedance measurements of connectors, cables, and backplanes. time-domain gating procedure that does not require any separate TRL or OSLT calibration fixtures. Crosstalk between all three signal pairs can be quickly characterized using a 12-port SPARQ. With a single 12-port measurement, NEXT and FEXT between the six differential ports can be measured. SPARQ models are available ranging from 2 through 12 ports. For more information about SPARQ analyzers, see http://teledynelecroy.com/SPARQ.
