Hardware installation procedure of the PCI Ambient modem Before installing the hardware, take the following precautions: See that your PC is turned off and that there is no mains voltage. 1. Detach the printer and monitor cable, because they have their own power supply 2. Now screw open the computer housing; 3 After you have screwed open the computer housing, see to it that you do not have any static electricity. This can be done, amongst others, by touching a (white) pipe of the central heating or an unpainted water pipe. Take note that you do not use a magnetic screwdriver. In addition, try to touch the contact points of the PC, card of the memory as little as possible; 4 Localise a free PCI slot, remove the metal protection plate in front of the slot. It may be a problem to place the card in the PCI slot. If this is the case, do not force anything, but try a different free slot; 5 When the card has been placed successfully, check whether all the other cards are still correctly placed in the PCI slots. When placing a PCI card, the other PCI cards may sometimes slightly move upwards, which means that the card in question or even the entire PC may not function anymore; 6 Now you can place the removed cover back on the computer housing and reconnect all cables that you had detached from your PC; 7 Now restart your PC again.
As soon as have selected the correct folder, click on ‘OK’ and the next screen will appear.
Software-installation procedure of the PCI Ambient modem After starting up the PC, Windows will detect the modem, then click on ‘Next’ to continue with the installation procedure.

5 If you click on ‘Next now, Windows will copy and install the drivers.
Windows indicates that the ‘Wizard’ will search for new drivers. You click on ‘Next’ in order to continue with the installation procedure. It is recommended to let Windows search for the best driver program: select this option and click on ‘Next’. Windows will now search for new drivers in the driver program database and in the selected locations. Now mark the ticks as indicated; you do not have to specify the location.
Place the supplied CD-ROM in the CD-ROM station and click on ‘Browse’. Select the station where the CD is placed and follow the selections as indicated in the next screen. If you use a different operating system, you select this operating system.

After this, Windows will show that the “Intel Ham Data Fax Voice Modem” has been installed. A second screen will also appear with the name “Ham settings”. We will discuss these settings later, now click on ‘Finish’. You do not close the screen with “Ham settings”, because this menu makes it possible to adjust the basic settings. When you have closed this screen, you can retrieve it by clicking on ‘My computer’ and selecting ‘Control panel’. There you can select the ‘Ham configuration’ screen. Now Windows will install the ‘Wave Device’. This is used for voice applications such as answering machines and for hands-free phoning. In order to install the drivers for this application, click on ‘Next’.

Ham settings In this menu you can adjust various basic settings. Under the tab page ‘Preferences’ you can select an option to show a modem icon in the bar at the bottom of the screen (‘trayer’), so that you can see at a single glance whether the modem is active. The next setting you can adjust is to let the modem operate in a ‘DOS-box environment’, for example ‘PC Banking’. When you want to work with several PCI cards at the same address, you can also adjust the settings in such a way that you can share an IRQ-address. Under the tab page ‘Uninstall’ you can undo the entire installation by clicking on ‘Perform Uninstall’.

7 Under the tab page ‘COM Port’ you can see which COM-port is used by the modem. During the installation a free COM-port is also sought. We advise you not to change this setting. As soon as you click on ‘OK’, the window is closed. After this, restart the computer. After the computer has been started again, you can check whether the installation procedure has proceeded correctly. To do this, go to ‘My computer’, select ‘Properties’ and then select ‘Device manager’ here. Under ‘Drivers for sound, video and games’ you can see that the ‘Intel Ham Data Fax Voice Modem’ has been added.
Under the tab page ‘International settings’ the country code can be set. In general the country is used in which the user lives.
If you see a yellow exclamation mark next to the modem, click on this device and remove it. Restart the computer and Windows will detect and install the modem again.
