1.0 Requirements & Logicube Device Compatibility The PCIe Kit (part # F-ADP-PCIE-KIT) is only supported on the Forensic Falcon. There is no other additional hardware or software required aside from the Forensic Falcon and PCIe Kit.
2.0 What’s in the Box? The following are included with the PCIe Kit: QTY 1: PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP) with an optional power cable QTY 1: M.2 to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-PCIE) – For M.2 PCIe AHCI or NVMe SSDs. QTY 1: Mini PCIe (mPCIe) to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-MINI-PCIE) – For Mini PCIe SSDs. QTY 1: M.2 to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-SATA) – For M.2 SATA SSDs. QTY 1: mSATA to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-Z-MSATA) – For mSATA SSDs. QTY 1: AC Adapter/Power Supply PCIe Kit for the Forensic Falcon

Application Note 3.0 Pictures (for Reference)
A drive power cable (for SSDs that may require a 4-pin power connection) and an AC Adapter is provided with the kit. These connect to the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP) and is not normally needed unless there is not enough power supplied to the drive. If the drive does not get detected, try connecting the AC adapter to the PCI Express Card Adapter.

Application Note 4.0 Understanding mini PCIe, mSATA, and M.2 SSDs mSATA and Mini PCIe – These SSDs have similar connectors. The mSATA SSD is Serial-ATA based, while the Mini PCIe is PCIe based. These two types of SSDs are not interchangeable. M.2 Solid State Drives (SSDs) come with one of two types of physical layers (PHY) and three types of controllers: SATA physical layer – SATA M.2 SSDs utilize the SATA controller. PCIe physical layer – There are two controllers for PCIe M.2 SSDs: AHCI Controller or NVMe Controller Typically, SATA M.2 SSDs utilize the “B & M key” while PCIe NVMe or PCIe AHCI SSDs utilize the”M key”.
Although the examples above are typical, Logicube recommends contacting the SSD manufacturer to determine whether the SSD has a SATA interface or a PCIe interface.
5.0 Connecting and Using the Adapters There are four types of SSDs supported by the PCIe Kit: M.2 PCIe AHCI or NVMe based SSDs. M.2 SATA based SSDs Mini PCIe (mPCIe) SSDs mSATA SSDs
5.1 M.2 PCIe AHCI or NVMe based SSDs M.2 PCIe AHCI or NVMe based SSDs require the M.2 to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-PCIE) and the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP). Any time the PCI Express Card Adapter is used, the SSD will only appear as a Source drive. 1. Turn the Falcon off. Although PCIe cards are designed to be be hot-swappable, this is not always the case and the Falcon should be turned off or rebooted when the PCI Express Card Adapter is used. Application Note 2. Connect the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP) to the PCIe port located in the back of the Falcon.
3. Connect the SSD to the M.2 to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-PCIE). 4. Connect the M.2 to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-PCIE) to the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP).
5.2 M.2 SATA based SSDs M.2 SATA based SSDs require the M.2 to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-SATA) which connects directly to any of the SAS/SATA cables supplied with the Falcon. M.2 SATA based SSDs can be used as Source drives or Destination drives. 1. Connect the SSD to the M.2 to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-SATA). PCIe Kit for the Forensic Falcon

Application Note 2. Connect M.2 to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-M.2-SATA) to the desired SAS/SATA port on the Falcon. The following ports can be used: SAS_S1, SAS_S2, SAS_D1, or SAS_D2.
5.3 Mini PCIe (mPCIe) SSDs Mini PCIe (mPCIe) SSDs require the Mini PCIe to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-MINI-PCIE) and the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP). Any time the PCI Express Card Adapter is used, the SSD will only appear as a Source drive. 1. Connect the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP) to the PCIe port located in the back of the Falcon.
2. Connect the SSD to the Mini PCIe to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-MINI-PCIE).

Application Note 3. Connect the Mini PCIe to PCIe Adapter (F-ADP-MINI-PCIE) to the PCI Express Card Adapter (F-ADP-PCI-EXP).
5.4 mSATA SSDs mSATA SSDs require the mSATA to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-Z-MSATA) which connects directly to any of the SAS/SATA cables supplied with the Falcon. mSATA SSDs can be used as Source drives or Destination drives. 1. Connect the SSD to the mSATA to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-Z-MSATA). 2. Connect mSATA to SATA Adapter (F-ADP-Z-MSATA) to the desired SAS/SATA port on the Falcon. The following ports can be used: SAS_S1, SAS_S2, SAS_D1, or SAS_D2.

Application Note 6.0 Imaging with the Falcon Once the SSD and the adapter(s) are connected to the Falcon, the SSD should appear either as a Source (all 4 types of SSDs) or Destination (M.2 SATA based SSD or mSATA SSD only). When a drive appears as a Source, it can be used in an Image (as a Source) or Hash task. When a drive appears as a Destination, it can be used in an Image (as a Destination/Repository), Hash, or Wipe task. For complete details on Image, Hash, or Wipe tasks, please refer to the Forensic Falcon User’s manual which can be found on the Forensic Falcon support page at: https://www.logicube.com/knowledge/forensic-falcon
