London Tube station takes on a feline nature
& Creative Lab Shanghai creates steamy campaign for Alibaba
INNOVATIVE CONCEPTS
The Citizens Advertising Takeover Service (CATS), created by a group called Glimpse, replaced every last trace of advertising space at Clapham Common station with images of cats. The crowd-funded campaign featured cats from Cats Protection, the U.K.’s largest feline welfare charity. Glimpse says it was motivated to help homeless cats but also because “it’s exhausting being asked to buy stuff all the time” from pervasive ads in most mass-transit systems.
Reebok transforms bus stops into mini gyms Reebok made an incredible outdoor campaign in Colombia by transforming 6 bus shelters in Bogotá and Cali into outdoor gyms. With the claim “The Gym is Everywhere” the campaign is creative and gorgeous. The bus shelters were equipped with bars, steps and even a personal trainer to instruct waiting passengers on what to do. Those who did participate were given the option to have a picture taken that would then be shared on social media to promote the campaign and their accomplishment.
& Creative Lab created an integrated campaign for Alibaba “520 Auction Day”, including an interactive HTML 5 game. In this, the person can scan their face and get a lip print after which they can either send a love letter with the lip print, or upload a portrait and get a new portrait made with thousands of lip prints, and sign on it. & Creative Lab also executed a unique outdoor interactive event in Shanghai International Fashion Center where people could make a lip print portrait of their own and send the art work to a huge LED screen (sized 6m*8m) by scanning the QR code on it.
Coca-Cola lets people make GIFs at bus stops in Singapore Coca-Cola partnered with Clear Channel for its global ‘Taste the Feeling’ campaign in Singapore that used image and colour recognition to create GIFs. The bus shelter ads asked passers by to show it something red in order to unlock a personalised photo experience. A series of Coke filters were then chosen and multiple poses captured to create a GIF. A QR code voucher was then generated, allowing people to get a drink.

Heralding the Future of Wide-Format Graphics Solutions
The printhead manufacturers are busy defining future printing technology by addressing a number of concerns such as print quality, productivity, reliability, and ease of integration

echnology advancements are all round irrespective of industries or domain. No wonder printheads for graphics applications have also jumped on to the bandwagon, in turn, unlocking new opportunities in graphics production and beyond. Piezoelectric drop-on-demand inkjet printheads are one of the most important components to wide-format and other inkjetbased imaging devices, and the on-going developments in inkjet head design and manufacture have greatly improved print speed, quality, the ability to produce unique effects and many more. The world of inkjet can be split into
10 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) and Drop-onDemand (DOD). CIJ, being primarily associated with date-coding food products like operation, is not of our concern. Going forward, the DOD arena breaks into Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) and Piezoelectric Inkjet (PIJ). TIJ is widely used in the graphic arts market — notably by HP and Canon, while manufacturers and users of PIJ printheads are in abundance. PIJ heads work by applying voltage pulses to a piezoelectric material, which deforms in response and so ejects ink droplets from a chamber via a carefully engineered nozzle. Each printhead has hundreds or thousands of such chambers and nozzles.
For unfolding the latest, Sign & POP World contacted leading printhead manufacturers from across the globe. Since the time constraint couldn’t allow us wait for all the responses, we restricted ourselves with what we received from the three majors – Fujifilm Dimatix, Epson and Konica Minolta. These giants shared their inputs on various aspects including what new they have added in their respective kitties recently in the name of advanced technology and how these advancements are going to change the market dynamics in time to come. While silicon MEMS (Micro-ElectroMechanical Systems) technology emerged

as the common attribute in the repertoire presented by the technology giants, the other factors like ‘greyscale’ or variable drop sizes, recirculating ink paths, compatibility of printheads with different types of media and inks, and high-speed operations have also got mentions from all the players owing to some improvement or the other.
that the company is focusing on its industrial Silicon MEMS (SiMEMS) as a core technology for the products of the future.
Precision Core TFP that features outstanding speed & output quality, and Precision Core Micro TFP. “All these fast-speed printheads offer professional quality prints and use less power thus bring economical printing solutions. Our entire signage products are using Precision Core Thin Film Piezo (TFP) printhead technology, wherein the TFP print chips facilitate maximum output of ink with an increased density of print,” avers Vasudevan L K, Deputy General Manager - Prographic Products, Sales & Marketing, Epson Inc.
Latest Developments Fujifilm Dimatix Inc. boasts of its bunch of pretty advanced printheads comprising Q-Class, Starfire, Samba, and other legacy products catering to any of the markets adopting digital printing. “Our products are designed to accurately disperse a wide range of fluid types in micro-amounts for demanding imaging and fabricating applications. We are constantly testing new fluids to continue to improve the breadth of our understanding and capabilities,” asserts Timothy N. Rosario, Senior Program Manager at Fujifilm Dimatix Inc. Rosario adds
According to him, SiMEMS allows for precisely high density features resulting in a high DPI and small & fast drop size. Fujifilm Dimatix also has a patented sputtered PZT, which is at the core of Samba printheads providing the engine for its high productivity. “Together, these result in a very high productivity and superb image quality, which are exemplified by the Fujifilm Jetpress 720S. We will continue the development in the sPZT and SiMEMS areas into its products to serve all the markets whether high-speed single pass or highly productive scanning systems,” he shares. Another technology major, Epson Inc. does have a wide range of next generation printheads that includes MicroPiezo AMC – known for its accurate & consistent dot placement for maximum resolution,
According to him, the major benefit of Epson’s new Precision Core printhead technology is its print chip core. “It is no longer just a printhead with a giant array, but a little itty-bitty chip core with the ability to produce sharp, clear and accurate dots. This technology has also enabled Epson to utilize more advanced forms of chemistry to create that piezo crystal, and the result is an extremely durable printhead. This new head has exceptional ink flexibility to print virtually with any ink – be it normal water-based pigment, hard solvent or mild solvent. Above all this is its scalability,” avers Vasudevan adding that Epson makes a single little chip that can be put together to build any array as per the need, in any colour space, for any application. “This is completely new technology.” Vasudevan further elucidates that with the flexibility to deliver high-speed solutions for commercial, industrial and office printing, Precision Core enables superior output quality & durability on the widest range of media. “All our printheads are manufactured using Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) for high-accuracy ink channels, enabling precise, high-speed ink ejection for precise & high-quality prints,” he underscores adding that the printheads from Epson are designed specifically for meeting requirements at highdemands of production environment and feature two one inch-wide printheads with

Konica Minolta (KM) goes deep in to the specifications when it comes to referring its solutions for pretty diversified Indian market. “We offer state-of-the-art printheads to our Indian customers i.e. printer manufacturers, depending upon the suitability to the respective applications keeping in view the variability of diverse requirements. For instance, KM512, KM512i, and KM1024 series are widely used on solvent printers for signage market because of their compact and economic features. Similarly, KM1024i and KM1800i are meant for barcode, label and high-resolution UV printing with high speed; while water-based heads KM512iMAB-C and KM1024iSAE-C/MAE-C are used specifically in textile printers,” explains Toshio Tsuzuku, Senior Manager, Sales Division–Component Business Group, Inkjet Business Unit, Konica Minolta Inc. For KM’s 1024 and 1024i series, each model has 1024 nozzles, but the older 1024 series uses two rows of 180dpi actuators operating in ‘shared wall’ or ‘three-cycle’ mode, whereas the newer 1024i series uses four rows of 90dpi actuators to achieve the same nozzle density but with significantly higher frequencies of operation. Remarkably, all the heads have an identical (and narrow) footprint: 106/18 mm. Each of the two families comes in small, medium and large-drop versions, and the similarity of mechanical mounting, electrical connection and ink connection provides greater flexibility for customers. According to Tsuzuku, the strength of KM printhead is the base material technology, and the mechanical design that emphasises the ease and simplicity of printhead use and its handling. “Of course, KM printheads incorporate cutting-edge technologies and innovations, but for us the most important part to make printheads is the verification of effects. All thanks to our R&D team that meticulously keeps integrating the day-today improvement in the printhead design to lead the innovation,” he elaborates adding that at KM, the core technology of printhead is the comprehensive capabilities of the base material technology, the mechanical design technology, and the processing technology. Tsuzuku insists that signage printing is the most widely-used application of KM printheads. The long-usage history of catering to the needs of signage printing fraternity with our printheads has already proved the worth, following which, KM is now getting into the next stage of improvements in the precision and productivity. The change in technology is further adding to the print quality as well as improving productivity. “For instance, our printhead using independent driving method can achieve triple productivity comparing to three-cycle-driving method – standard printhead technology, used widely by leading manufacturers such as Xaar. Also, because of the improvement on the inside

technology, recirculation, greyscale/binary, ink connections, frame configurations, and the like. Adding to it is the absence of any wear out mechanisms such that when properly designed into a system and maintained as per instructions, they would have a very long life. In some cases, like the Galaxy and Starfire, the products are repairable such that if an event occurs that does cause damage the heads can be removed from the system, repaired, and put back into service,” elaborates Rosario. Rosario mentions that several factors affect drop placement and the impact can be seen in the final output if necessary measures are not taken. FUJIFILM has developed its VersaDrop technology that allows its printheads to be tuned to many inks with an open architecture. “VersaDrop is actually our greyscale technology where we can have very small drops for high resolution and closer viewing; large drops for long distance viewing or the greyscale, variable drops to achieve text or flesh-tones,” he says.

In addition, nozzle plates, which can experience unwanted scratches, dust accumulation, and cured ink building up around nozzles can all be causes of misplaced drops. Keeping all this in mind, Fujifilm maintains very strict tolerances on their nozzle plate manufacturing for not only maintaining very straight nozzles to start with but also their coatings and other processes to prevent some of the issues listed above. Epson too claims that the flexibility to use a wide variety of media is its key strength. “We have successfully tested more than 200 different types & varieties of media used in the signage industry like flex banner, paper, film, one-way vision, wall coverings, canvas, backlit, vehicle wraps, textile and many more. This has gained the mind share of the Epson products among the signage converters,” shares Vasudevan adding that the company offers standard warranty that covers the printheads. Also, there is the Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) for the convenience of the customers. Beside printheads, Epson also develops its own inks based on the feedback from the market to cater to the varying industry requirements. Compatibility with Inks
flow of the printhead, and integration of the laser processing technology on the nozzles with increased accuracy, our printheads today are developed to disperse small drop size (6pl or even 3.5pl), which is suitable not only for industrial application but also for signage printing,” reinstates Tsuzuku. It’s aptly clear that when it comes to print quality, there are factors like drop velocity, drop volume, jet straightness and jet-to-jet uniformity, which are of greater importance. Industry experts advise that a printhead with a high jetting velocity allows for high stand-off distance. Therefore, depending upon the application, for a flatbed moving heads over a large area, a higher stand-off is going to limit the amount of head strikes. It
14 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
is also important to get uniform drop volume out of every jet as any inconsistency in the drop sizes or the wide tolerance may lead to deteriorating imaging in the final output. Further, the jet straightness is also very critical to avoid fuzzy images. Jet-to-jet uniformity means all these components are consistent.
Ease of Integration Amidst all this, the market wants a printhead that can facilitate easier and faster integration as well as compatibility – be it for media or inks. “Fujifilm Dimatix has several product families in which different printhead types are interchangeable. For example, the Q-class products come in over 100 varieties that allow for native drop size, nozzle plate
Going forward, not only the differentiated media but also the market is brimming up for printers that do not require changing of inks for different applications. Following which, many manufacturers have started working on this front to develop printheads that can offer greater compatibility with a wide range of inks that are currently available in the market. “Many of our heads are rated for the major ink types AQ, Solvent, UV. However, in some cases, like ceramic, we specify a different material set to be compatible with oil-based fluids. Back to our wide range of options though, we have variants that allow us to match the head to the ink type needed if a ‘universal’ material set isn’t available. Using

proper flush and change over procedures allow the heads to be used with different inks even in the same system. One area that distinguishes Dimatix printheads is our RediJet technology. Speed between switchovers is the key here, and RediJet recirculation means heads will be primed and ready to print quickly,” asserts Rosario. When it comes to compatibility, Epson offers different types of inks for different printhead technology to give the best results which the customers nowadays look for. For example, Micro Piezo AMC printhead along with Ultrachrome HD pigment ink is the best suited for professional photography print application.
16 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
According to Tsuzuku, since the inkjet printing technology is a noncontact printing, matching with the ink is more important issue than that of the physical integration between media and inkjet head. “Especially, the printhead is required to be widely compatible with the ink parameters. KM printhead has the compatibility with both low viscosity water-based ink as well as high viscosity UV ink,” he says adding that for all this to happen in proper coordination, KM has a professional team that works closely with the ink manufacturers from across the world to help our customers (printer manufacturers) in verifying the compatibility of the ink they want to use. KM does posses an ink development team, but it doesn’t offer inks to its printhead customers. “Instead, we design our printhead for wide ink compatibility, and help our customers to test the ink they want to use.” Tsuzuku further elaborates, “The compatibility is affected by various ink parameters, mainly the viscosity, the surface tension, the particle size, and the fluidproof. KM has line-up of the printheads with
the internal heater that heats up the high viscosity ink to lower its viscosity so as to make the same compatible for a different usage. When using big particle size ink, big printhead nozzle is needed to prevent ink clog. Moreover, if the ink uses strong solvent, the inside material of the printhead may be damaged. KM printheads use the high fluid-proof material to prevent this kind of damage.”
Conclusion: Interestingly, printheads have been present in digital printing, coding and marking for years, before wide-format graphics camein to define new lines of opportunities, around a decade ago. It is further expanding encompassing huge potential as the number & type of substrate is continuously on the surge; urging the technology giants to come up with solution that can efficiently address most of the issues. These apart, the stakeholders may look forward to develop printheads for next generation printers, with further enhanced accuracy, improved print quality and increased speed to combat the comparatively faster-rolling future challenges. Meanwhile, commercial printing applications are growing, along with it 3D prototyping, functional applications, deposition applications in printed electronics, and bio-science applications, where printheads are used as a micro-pump or a precision dispensing tool in jetting fluids other than ink.

Printhead Design & Cleaning Mechanisms There are two main design philosophies in inkjet head design: fixed-head and disposable head each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Fixed Head:
Disposable Head
The fixed-head philosophy provides an inbuilt print-head (often referred to as a gaiterhead) that is designed to last for the life of the printer. The idea is that because the head need not be replaced every time the ink runs out, consumable costs can be made lower and the head itself can be more precise than a cheap disposable one, typically requiring no calibration. On the other hand, if a fixed head is damaged, obtaining a replacement head can become expensive, if removing and replacing the head is even possible. If the printer’s head cannot be removed, the printer itself will then need to be replaced.
The disposable head philosophy uses a printhead which is supplied as a part of a replaceable ink cartridge. Every time a cartridge is exhausted, the entire cartridge along with printhead is replaced with a new one. This adds to the cost of consumables and makes it more difficult to manufacture a high-precision head at a reasonable cost, but also means that a damaged or clogged print head is only a minor problem: the user can simply buy a new cartridge. HP has traditionally favoured the disposable print head, as did Canon in its early models. This type of construction can also be seen as an effort by printer manufacturers to stem third party ink cartridge assembly replacements, as these would-be suppliers don’t have the ability to manufacture specialized print heads.
Fixed head designs are available in consumer products, but are more likely to be found on industrial high-end printers and large format plotters. In the consumer space, fixed-head printers are manufactured primarily by Epson and Canon. HP also offers a few fixedhead models, such as the HP OfficeJet Pro X576dw. Industrial fixed-head print heads are manufactured by companies including Kodak Versamark, Trident, Xaar, Spectra (Dimatix), Hitachi / Ricoh, HP Scitex, Brother, Konica Minolta, Seiko Epson, and ToshibaTec (a licensee of Xaar).
18 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
However, an intermediate method does exist. A disposable ink tank connected to a disposable head, which is replaced infrequently (perhaps every tenth ink tank or so). Most high-volume Hewlett-Packard inkjet printers use this setup, with the disposable print heads used on lower volume models. A similar approach is used by Kodak, where the printhead intended for permanent use
is nevertheless inexpensive and can be replaced by the user. Canon now uses (in most models) replaceable print heads which are designed to last the life of the printer, but can be replaced by the user should they become clogged. Head Cleaning is a Must The primary cause of inkjet printing problems is ink drying on the printhead’s nozzles, causing the pigments and dyes to dry out and form a solid block of hardened mass that plugs the microscopic ink passageways. Most printers attempt to prevent this drying from occurring by covering the printhead nozzles with a rubber cap when the printer is not in use. However, abrupt power losses, or unplugging the printer before it has capped the printhead, can cause the printhead to be left in an uncapped state. Even when the head is capped, this seal is not perfect, and over a period of several weeks the moisture (or other solvent) can still seep out, causing the ink to dry and harden. Once ink begins to collect and harden, the drop volume can be affected, drop trajectory can change, or the nozzle can completely fail to jet ink. To combat this drying, nearly all inkjet printers include a mechanism to reapply moisture to the printhead. Typically there is no separate supply of pure ink-free solvent available to do this job, and so instead the ink itself is used to remoisten the printhead. The printer attempts to fire all nozzles at once, and as the ink sprays out, some of it wicks across the printhead to the dry channels and partially softens the hardened ink. After spraying, a rubber wiper blade is swept across the printhead to spread the moisture evenly across the printhead, and the jets are again all fired to dislodge any ink clumps blocking the channels. Some printers use a supplemental air-suction pump, utilizing the rubber capping station to suck ink through a severely clogged cartridge. The suction pump mechanism is frequently driven by the page feed step-
per motor: it is connected to the end of the shaft. The pump only engages when the shaft turns backwards, hence the rollers reversing while head cleaning. Due to the built-in head design, the suction pump is also needed to prime the ink channels inside a new printer, and to reprime the channels between ink tank changes.
The ink consumed in the cleaning process needs to be collected to prevent ink from leaking in the printer. The collection area is called the spittoon, an open plastic tray underneath the cleaning/wiping station. For printers several years old, it is common for the dried ink in the spittoon to form a pile that can stack up and touch the printheads, jamming the printer. Some larger professional printers using solvent inks may employ a replaceable plastic receptacle to contain waste ink and solvent which must be emptied or replaced when full. There is a second type of ink drying that most printers are unable to prevent. For ink to spray from the cartridge, air must enter to displace the removed ink. The air enters via an extremely long, thin labyrinth tube, up to 10 cm long, wrapping back and forth across the ink tank. The channel is long and narrow to reduce moisture evaporation through the vent tube, but some evaporation still occurs and eventually the ink cartridge dries up from the inside out. To combat the issue, which is especially acute with professional fast-drying solvent inks, many wide-format printer cartridge designs contain the ink in an airtight, collapsible bag that requires no vent. The bag merely shrinks until the cartridge is empty.

Professional solvent- and UV-curable ink wide-format inkjet printers generally include a ‘manual clean’ mode that allows the operator to manually clean the print heads and capping mechanism and to replace the wiper blades and other parts used in the automated cleaning processes. The volume of ink used in these printers often leads to ‘overspray’ and therefore build-up of dried ink in many places that automated processes are not capable of cleaning.
New wide-format printers make their way into the Indian market At a recent trade show, many of the top manufacturers and distributors of wide-format printers made an impressive show of the latest machines to hit the market. HP Inc. boasts of technology that it keeps reinventing to make life better for users irrespective of their being architects, designers, or print service providers. HP technology, built on deep R&D knowhow and decades of industry experience, integrates print heads, writing systems, and inks to deliver solutions that make it different from the herd. When it comes to large format printing division, the company has primarily four variants – DesignJet, Latex, PageWide XL, and Scitex Industrial Presses – feeding the need of various markets depending upon the usage.
Puneet Chadha, Director-Market Development, Graphic Solutions Business, HP, Asia Pacific & Japan
HP’s Latex printer series has been in discussion these days for their applications versatility and higher profit potential than most of their competitors present in the form of solvent and eco-solvent printers especially for meeting the unique requirements of signage & point of purchase segment. No wonder, Latex is witnessing increased focus and traction for HP. The testimony of the fact is that till date HP has sold more than 35,000 latex printers globally, including India. This is not bad at all keeping in view the ongoing transformation where print providers with solvent and eco-solvent technology are shifting focus to UV or Latex. To further explore on what more HP has in its kitty for its Indian customers, Sign & POP World got hold with Puneet Chadha, Director Market Development, Graphic Solutions Business, HP, Asia Pacific & Japan. Here are the edited excerpts:
How have you seen HP creating a market for its printers in India? Initially when we started latex in India, it was limited only at the smaller end of the market. Gradually, due to our reinventing nature, we kept adding new products at regular intervals. Today, we have a huge portfolio for Latex starting from 300 series to 3100 series. This is because HP Latex goes even where solvent can’t, allowing wider application versatility and higher profit potential than eco-solvent. It provides option to the print service providers to choose from a wide range of flexible coated and uncoated materials and expand your opportunity beyond vinyls and banners to films, papers, textiles, canvas, wall paper, and more. Today, Latex is everywhere - be it shopping malls, showrooms, exhibitions, bus-wrap, train wrap, metros, airports, etc. All because of the reliance the customers showed on HP’s consistency and versatility in the output

over the years. At HP, we keep improving constantly to meet the customers’ evolving needs.
What new has been added from HP Latex for its Indian customers? We introduced HP Latex 500 series in the recently concluded Media Expo 2016 in New Delhi. Designed for medium-to-large PSPs with increasing print volumes, the new 64-inch HP Latex 560 and 570 Printers enable customers to manage a variety of print jobs and peaks in production at a low upfront investment. Features include more unattended printing with a new spindle-less pivot table and automatic skew adjustment to load rolls in one minute or less, heavyduty roll handling of rolls up to 55kg (121 lbs.) as well as a status beacon for real-time production monitoring from a distance. Other features are print speed up to 23m2/
for Excellence’. The centre houses all the HP machines and demonstrates most of the possible applications available globally for our customers and brands to make them understand and learn about the limitless possibilities of printing solutions that HP can offer. Like these, we have lot of things that we are using on education side to help grow the graphic solution market.
What changes do you observe when it comes to changing trends in the Indian graphic solution market?
hr (248 ft2/hr) at indoor mode for costeffective production of high-quality jobs at fast turnaround times, highly-saturated prints using new vivid print modes with 50% increased ink density, and a new wiper roller accessory for high-quality results on low cost banners and self-adhesive vinyl.
We have recently launched HP Latex 3100 series that promises to deliver high quality image for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications. It is ideal for large sign and display PSPs with a diverse service offering. Printing indoor quality at speeds up to 77 m2/hr (830 ft2 /hr), the printer can handle peaks in production and deliver on short turnaround times without sacrificing quality. Helping customers increase unattended operation with remote monitoring and print status alerts, the new HP Latex 3100 Printer comes compatible with the HP Latex Mobile application, with expanded functionality including metrics reporting and extended language support. The new Printer Status Beacon also helps operators stay up-to-date on job status and unexpected downtime from anywhere on the production floor. The HP Latex 3100 Printer is also JDFenabled, a standard language that allows data to pass between different systems to simplify data exchange and collection, helping PSPs reduce labour costs and increase profitability through automation. The Printer is also JDF-enabled, a standard language that allows data to pass between different systems to simplify data exchange and collection, helping PSPs reduce labour costs and increase profitability through automation.
With all these, how do you see the potential for HP in Signage business? Signage, of course, is one of the markets,
This apart, we have a huge scope for HP’s versatile printing solutions in decor segments that comprises wallpapers, canvas, fleet graphics, vehicle graphics, etc. For all these markets, we are creating various workflow (software-based application) verticals to help automate the process for our customers. For example, HP WallArt was created in India over three years back, which has now evolved to become one of the core markets for us. Following the success, we are soon going to launch workflow around vehicle graphics here to facilitate our customers with car-wrapping process automation, the charisma of which we already have demonstrated during drupa 2016.
What new ways have you developed to engage your customers? For bigger brands, we have Dscoop, a community of HP Inc.’s print service providers. Dscoop creates ways to help the community to take part in education, networking and revenue growth opportunities. At HP, we are fully committed to our customers and their community. We will continue to enable our print service providers with further innovations in digital printing technology and more meaningful conversations with brands at such forums, hence, helping them explore new markets and generate fresh revenue streams. This apart, we keep organizing workshops for our customers to help them identify the rapidly changing trends and be in tune with the same.
Having said that a transition is clearly visible wherein print service providers are transforming themselves to become marketing service providers. This trend has opened doors of opportunities for our customers. They are now brandishing a host of machines, operators, a team of qualified designers, and have their own vendors for media, frames, and other components. There are around 3,800 brands in the market which are searching for costumers every day. They must be creative to stand out from that clutter and must not wait for the competition to catch up. So, we keep inventing to remain at the helm of the affairs. This is what we are doing. And therefore, we are market leaders.
When it comes to large format, how has been HP’s representation across the country vis-a-vis global market? We have sold more than 35,000 Latex printers across the world. The growth for the same in India is significant for us with number of large format printers crossing two hundred, till date. We are present across the country, so are the potentials. Thanks to the brands like Future Group & LAVA for their continuous belief in HP Latex for numerous attributes including the consistency in colour output for n number of print services, odourless environment, cost-effectiveness, etc. Besides all this, there is versatility, which only Latex offers to these brands to help them maintaining the consistency in the next level of their market expansion. And to assist them achieving their respective goals, we ensure a fail-proof HP’s network, countywide.

How is HP assisting country’s Signage industry with its latest technology?
which is a very big focus for us where we foresee a huge growth. Some numbers are clearly indicating that in the next four to five years’ time, we will grow by more than 25.8%. This is what signage industry has for us. In fact, the large format segment is ruled over by outdoor signage followed by the indoor ones. We also have printers for textile media for signage.
Customers today do not come to the solution providers. Rather a solution provider needs to look out for its customers i.e. print buyers or brand owners, who want the print solution providers to help them sell more by getting them engaged with the print. The brand owners actually ask for ways to engage their customers with the print irrespective of it being in packaging or signage or anything for that matter to help excel the business. This, from marketing perspective, has become a must. Customers want to experience by touching and feeling the products. This ultimately increases their buying propensity by not less than 25%.

3D Lens Technology – Adds A New Dimension to Printed Signage Agfa’s 3D Lens Technology uses a combination of a moiré effect and small, spherical lenses to impart a lenticular-like 3D effect to an image. More detailed images’—like the doughnut-require larger lenses.

he recently concluded SIGA 2016 in Las Vegas witnessed a slightly different 3D Lens Technology from Agfa Graphics’ portfolio of innovation. For print service providers looking for a flexible solution that can grow with their business, the Jeti Mira offers a moving gantry and ‘Print & Prepare’ technology for quick media loading while the printer is in operation. The 106” (2.7m) wide, six-color + white, the UV inkjet Jeti Mira system is equipped with optional varnish and will demonstrate Agfa Graphics’ 3D Lens Technology which produces a three dimensional varnish effect without the need for lenticular substrates. The 3D Lens Technology, based on printing of transparent lenses with the Jeti Mira’s varnish option, enhances and adds value to print by transforming images into captivating
TECHNOLOGY
optical illusions. Built for heavy industrial workloads, the system allows quick media loading while the printer is in operation. Traditional lenticular images are produced using a plastic sheet that contains long, thin cylindrical lenses called lenticles. These lenticles are only millimeters wide or smaller. Beneath the lenticles is a printed sheet containing one or more images that have been sliced up into tiny stripes that are the same width as the lenticles. They are interlaced such that each stripe lines up with a lenticle. The lenticles then refract the image so that from one angle you see one image, and from another you see a different
one. This imparts a 3D effect or a very simple animation. Lenticular is a variety of what is known as autostereoscopic imaging—or, in essence, ‘glasses-free 3D display’. The challenge with lenticular imaging is that registration of the interlaced image to the lenticle sheet has to be precise. The latest 3D Lens technology from Agfa Graphics instead of printing long, thin cylindrical lenticles; prints tiny transparent circular dots that function as tiny lenses, using a moiré pattern to impart a 3D effect to an image. And rather than mount the printed image to a plastic sheet of lenticles, it prints the lenses directly using clear
varnish. One advantage to using a circular dot pattern rather than traditional lenticles is that registration doesn’t need to be as precise as even if the printed pattern is misregistered slightly, it still depicts the pattern, and the effect still works. The smallest image that can be printed is about two inches by two inches, with the largest being the maximum board size of the Jeti Mira, which is about 106 by 60 inches. The software interfaces with Agfa’s Jeti Mira flatbed UV printer, currently one of two Agfa units that have varnish printing capability (the Jeti Titan is another, although the 3D

Lens Technology is still being developed for the Jeti Titan). The 3D Lens software ships with the Jeti Mira and does not need to be purchased separately. Once the proper pattern is created in the software, it is output in two passes; the image itself is printed on a white background (the Jeti Mira also prints white ink) on any kind of clear acrylic or polycarbonate substrate, the sheet is flipped, registered, and then the pattern of tiny lenses is printed via the clear varnish. Although interlacing two different images—perhaps the emblematic lenticular application—isn’t yet possible with 3D Lens Technology, but the company keeps the hope alive when it claims, it’s on the horizon. In the future, there will be added lenticular feature where one can have the image switching, and that will be done though varnish. But that’s still in development. At present, the effect works best on very simple images, like geometric shapes. For now, it’s not possible to get someone’s face, for example, in 3D, because there’s too much detail. Usually vector images work best. Currently, the effect adds depth to a flat image, or even causes the background to change as the viewer walks past it. It can change the colour background, like for instance, it turns green and if the viewer walks past, he can see it turns purple, and then back to green again. The possibilities are further enhanced as the goal is to make signage dynamic without needing to monkey around with dynamic digital signage. According to Babak Amoozgar, Jeti Applications Specialist for Agfa Graphics, it’s hard to get someone to look at a sign because most of the image is static. “If you have a moving background,
28 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
it will capture more attention,” Amoozgar has been quoted as saying. Citing one Agfa customer, who is using 3D Lens Technology for fine-art applications—much like the Digital Atelier used lenticular printing for fine art back in the 1990s—and others are using it for décor, he mentioned, “We’re seeing more use in interior design applications, such as displays in buildings and front-desk backgrounds in offices. Future applications could include billboards, but that is still some years away.” Equipped with a unique, dockable roll-to-roll (RTR) option, the Jeti Mira’s 7pl droplet size produces stunning detail and razor-sharp text as small as 4-point type. Its six vacuum zones, featuring four sets of registration pins, enable fast and accurate double-sided printing. “You print by layering up the varnish to get the height that you need to create a 3D effect,” said Amoozgar adding that since it’s done with varnish, you don’t need special lenticular media. The 3D effect itself is governed by a combination of substrate thickness, lens size, and lens height. Agfa offers three substrate thicknesses—3mm, 5mm, and 9mm—and for each thickness there are two different lens widths and six different depths. Different combinations will yield different effects, from an image that ‘pops’ out of the background, or, conversely, appears to sink into the background. Printing both the image and the lenses is said to take between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on how much layering is required to build the lenses to the correct height.

Alliance Dilli is a leading manufacturer of UV-based printers in the world has supplied more than 5000 printers since 2003. They are on the forefront when it comes to the development of UV technology since inception having quite a few patents registered in their name. Led by Dr. GS Choi (PHD in Piezoelectric technology), the printing technology major and OEM supplier to Agfa has come out with innovative printers. Apart from UV inkjet hybrid, roll-to-roll printers (NeoTitan series), Dilli has also developed Mercury-dedicated Label printer having phenomenal speed of up to 50m/min capable of printing directly onto paper, film, foil, etc. A recent addition in the Dilli’s high-end printers’ league is NeoSun (new series). Another machine under Dilli’s portfolio is Jupiter, meant dedicated to printing on PCBs. The most recent addition in the company’s UV Flatbed printers’ portfolio is the UV Jet brilliantly integrated ‘cool cure’ LED technology that empowers users with the ability to do more for less while reducing operating costs and arresting environmental footprints. In order to know more on how UV Printers is strategising its future in India, Sign & POP World caught up with Kirti Vijay Sharma & Mohan KT. The duo spoke diligently on the emerging market, complimenting new products, the integrated technology and new avenues of revenue generation. Here are the edited excerpts:
Which new machine have you come up with recently? What are the USPs? We have just introduced RicohGen5 print head, variable Dot, 7pl, printer for highdefinition image quality. All thanks to its superb transitions, vignettes, skin tones, and shadows. Sizes are variable like 5/3, 8/4,
30 SIGN & P.O.P NOV-DEC ‘16
5/10, 6/10 depending upon the usability of the printer. The uniqueness is the ease that comes especially when glass is to be printed with its roller-based technology that needs only a gentle push to scroll down. Another unique point is its availability for entry level print service providers that too at a reasonable price. Any newcomer can start with a lower configuration i.e.
You mentioned yours’ is a Ricoh head. Is there any other variant of this printer available in the market? How is it affecting customers’ decision? Yes, there are other variants. The printer with Konica Minolta (KM) head is already there for quite some time, while the one with RicohGen5 head is a recent addition with differentiated attributes. KM machine is based on 14pl, Mercury lamps while machine with Ricoh heads comes with LEDs. We have Kyocera, variable Dot, 3pl, Hybrid printer which offers 400-600sft/hr print speed. All the variants are available in a price range of 25L-1.5cr. As far as customers are concerned, they come with their own set of unique queries for which they take their time to decide on. And since the number of printer seller (not the complete knowhow provider) has gone up drastically; it gives buyers the opportunity to negotiate and opt for the best deal.
So, your new Ricoh head printer is based on LED technology. How is it going to benefit the users? Undoubtedly, the LED technology helps save a lot. ‘cool cure’ LED technology empowers users with the ability to do more for less. In fact, it increases profit opportunity simply by offering more premium-margin jobs to
the customers while reducing operating costs and in turn arresting environmental footprints. Besides, it extends the range of supported substrates, including lower cost and added-value specialty media, rein in the operating costs with significantly less energy consumption, increases uptime and productivity with instant on/off and less maintenance, and reduces waste with consistent colour output and simple operation. Thus it satisfies customers who look for a greener print solution with low VOCs, lower power consumption, and less waste and consumables.
Which types of customers you come across these days? How do you see the prospects of the industry? See, there are categories based on the kind of prospects and usability, the specific client has. Some of the clients have already spent some time in the industry, and hence, they have prior knowledge of the printing lines. Accordingly, they understand the importance of quality-components like Pico, nozzle, bed, head, inks, speed, etc. that go in a printer. However, there are people who are completely raw and don’t know anything -be it about the product or industry. For these newcomers, we explain right from what is printer, its components, to various applications attributed to that specific printer. For them to get convinced, the role of knowledgeable salesman eventually becomes important. Overall, this increasing interest of people either from scratch or with some experience of different fields than printing is nothing but an indication of expanding market and bright future prospects.
What are those typical concerns – printer’s attributes or price - that buyers approach you with while they come for a new printing machine? There are customers from various classes that we deal with. Generally, in any such printer, the customers look for attributes like quality, speed, initial cost, running / maintenance cost & provider, etc. In all, they want a cost-effective economic deal. So, it won’t be wrong to mention that price matters as we are a country where the market is extremely price-sensitive and people want the best at the least. To meet the price line, in some cases, the quality is compromised. However, this perception keeps varying with individuals, and therefore, can’t be generalised to all the market rovers.
How do you see the prospects for signage printing machines in India? See, today’s buyer may be from either of the first, second or third generation have become over conscious when it comes to investment, considering the churn out v/s profit. What I have learnt from my experiences is that the machine specifically for signage printing doesn’t generate demand, but multi-purpose ones that are asked for their value addition attribute especially for their ability to print not only on Sun board or Acrylic but also on Glass, Wooden panels, ACP, etc. Investors now look at faster ROI, versatility, which actually makes them think before opting for printer that can only print signage. Therefore, to justify people’s investment irrespective of him being a start-up or the one from among the existing stakeholders, for that matter, we are forced to look beyond signage.

Latest report estimates large format printer market worth 8.42 billion USD by 2022 The recent market research report christened as ‘Large Format Printer Market - Global Trends & Forecast to 2022’, predicts a cultivating future where Signage is expected to lead the large format printer market in terms of volume. This will be followed by UV-cured inks for the same and the centre of the growth would be the APAC region. Signage has many applications such as in indoor signs, shop branding, indicators, large corporate emblems, promotional signage, and window displays. Signage acts as an influencer at the point of sale; as an attraction point in booth decoration among others. Although there has been a considerable penetration of digital signage, the overall large format printer market is still expected to show a steady growth in the retail graphics industry, particularly in the indoor PoS signage. A major factor is growth of organized retail in emerging economies such as India, which is leading to construction of large-scale retail outlets such as hypermarkets and supermarkets where PoS and PoP signs are used extensively. Meanwhile, the large format printer market for UV-Cured ink is also expected to exhibit high growth during the forecast period, the report mentions. UV-cured ink consists of acrylic monomers with a photo initiator. As soon as the printing is done, the ink is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes a chemical reaction, thus, making the ink solid. Unlike solvent and aqueous inks, the UV-cured ink does not evaporate. It gets set and dries up quickly on the exposure of UV light and can be sent to the next step of the production process. This makes them durable and suitable for printing on a wide range of flexible materials along with direct to rigid substrates. Due to these advantages of UV-cured ink, the large format printers for UV-cured ink have been adopted at the fastest rate by the end users.

Esko to partner with Popli Graphics After TechNova and Malhotra Graphics, Esko has announced its partnership with New Delhi-based Popli Graphics to market its flexo pre-press products in the northern region. While TechNova has been given the responsibility for signage products pan-India, Malhotra will handle the flexo products in the country’s Western region. The division of markets among the three partners is aimed at smooth trade for Esko. “As you can see, our partners will not be competing with each other but promoting our products in their demarked markets,” John Winderam, Southern Asia-Pacific general manager for Esko has been quoted as saying. According to Winderam, India is a huge country and Esko cannot expect to cover all the potential business on its own. “We have embarked on finding strategic partners we can work with, one with specific skill sets, which will help us reach across India. We are pleased to partner with Popli, as this partnership enables us to offer a complete chain of our solutions to our customers. This is a continuation of this strategy,” he explained. Popli specialises in supply of printing material consumables and marketing of printing equipment. The company, among others, represents TechNova, Autoprint, DuPont, Siegwerk, Hubergroup and 3M. “We have been representing DuPont for the last 15 years and we know that the Esko-DuPont relationship worldwide is very strong. It is a natural choice to bring that synergy to the customers. We have been engaged in Esko products in the past also. Here, we are simply formalising the partnership,” Popli’s MD, Sanjeev Popli has been quoted as saying. According to Popli, offset is a very simple operation as compared to flexo. “There are many parameters in flexo and when people talk of Equinox as a process, where small components mismatch can knock the project off, it becomes imperative that one offers the complete solution,” he explained.

Ministry urges to remove roadside hoardings & advertisements The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had, in September this year, issued a circular that all regional officers and engineering liasoning officers shall inspect the National Highways and submit reports to the Ministry regarding advertisement hoardings on the highways so that action could be taken. According to a circular of the Ministry issued in 2002, advertisement hoardings will not be permitted on National Highways within the Right of Way except informatory signs of public interest. However, despite the Ministry’s notice not allowing roadside promotional hoardings as it cause distraction and lead to massive accidents, advertisement hoardings are generally seen along the National Highways. K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, pointed out that despite this circular, action has not been taken. Hoardings and advertisements are placed at traffic signals at the junction of the roads or road sides. The officials of the National Highways should remove these as directed by the Ministry. Some officials even grant no objection certificates for commercial advertisements on the NH roadsides, though it is against the guidelines of the Ministry. Mr. Kathirmathiyon appealed to the Highways Department to initiate action, remove the advertisements at the signs, signals, and other devices erected for traffic control and those on the roadsides so that the rules are not violated.
Cops plans extra funds from outdoor advertising Several government departments like railways and civic public transport have participated in the boom of outdoor advertising. In one such move, the Maharashtra police have permitted its units to earn revenue by renting out prime locations for outdoor commercials to advertising companies. It has been said that the police welfare fund will get majority of the revenue generated. These funds will be utilised for doling out scholarships to cops’ children, medical aid, ex-gratia amount and so on. However, the police units have will have to seek prior permission from the police headquarters in Mumbai, before renting out the spaces for advertisement. The order permits officials to put up hoardings and banners only at the police training establishments, state reserve police force (SRPF) premises and police lines (residential colonies). The advertisements cannot be put up at police stations or other police unit offices. There are 13 police colonies spread across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, while SRPF units are located in Hadapsar and Wanowrie. Police officials said that this decision would help in filling their coffers as most police offices are located at prime locations thus have potential to earn through advertising banners and hoardings. After receiving the order last week, all senior police inspectors in-charge of police stations have been asked to survey prime spots under their jurisdictions that fulfill the criteria and submit a report to the office of assistant commissioner of police (welfare), which will be then forwarded to the police headquarters in Mumbai. No political hoarding, narcotic substance, indecent content or which incite public can be put up. All the necessary taxes for local civic bodies and other departments have to be paid by the police unit or the person concerned taking the space on rent.

However, there is no change in the Expo’s Mumbai (23-25 February 2017) and Delhi (22-24 September 2017) editions, as of now. According to Raj Manek, executive director, Messe Frankfurt Asia, Messe Frankfurt works closely with the industry to ensure that these platforms represent what the Indian market requires. “The decision to launch Media Expo in Chennai was thus based on the strategic feedback and support of our key exhibitors, who have now communicated a sudden change in their strategies. It is not an easy decision, but one we feel we must make to avoid compromising on the scale and standard of a Messe Frankfurt exhibition.” Going forward, for its 40th grand edition in Mumbai, the organisers now intend to attract the target sectors from the south ensuring that exhibitors will have the opportunity to meet business prospects from this significant and important region. The organisers also believe that the rescheduled dates will benefit the exhibitors by bringing a larger and more specific but targeted participation from trade visitors and professionals when the industry can come together in Chennai.

EFI Vutek adds versatility to ESP Technologies offerings Two significant investments into the latest superwide- and wide-format print technology from EFI have resulted in Kent, UK-based ESP Technologies group adopting LED inkjet graphics printing, giving the company greater versatility across different materials plus considerable savings in energy and running costs. The purchase of a 5-metre EFI Vutek GS5500lxr Pro roll-to-roll LED printer and a 3.2-metre Vutek GS3250lx Pro hybrid roll/flatbed LED printer earlier this year means that the company can take advantage of the best opportunities across many different production formats.
NEWSWIRE
Specialising in providing a vast range of printed materials for leading brands in retail, plus the event, exhibition and museum sectors, ‘ESP Technologies group also produces general display work for interior and exterior locations. Founded in 1993 as a high-end screenprinting company, ESP moved into superwide-format digital print seven years later with the purchase of one of the first Vutek 5300 5-metre, roll-fed platforms. Subsequent investments included a Vutek QS3200 printer which broadened the company’s capabilities into digital print with its ability to generate very high-quality work on rigid and flexible substrates. With growing demand for 5-metre applications as well as the need for high-quality multiple roll-fed jobs, ‘ESP Technologies group realised that its most efficient way forward was to invest in a new superwide-format printer. Because of its long-term relationship with EFI, the company chose the roll-to-roll Vutek LED printer as the natural successor to its earlier machines, and it made the decision to purchase a hybrid Vutek LED printer at the same time. This joint investment now enables the company to offer a full range of flexible and rigid applications, meeting its clients’ high-end expectations with precision colour matching across all materials. Both new machines also benefit from EFI’s LED ‘cool cure’ technology, which requires up to 82 per cent less energy - an ideal complement to ESP’s environmental ethic and desire to produce greener output. The common EFI Fiery digital front end workflow shared by the printers allows for fast and accurate throughput.
