PELICAN GUIDE WHEEL PIVOT PIN LOCKING PLATE Subsidiary of Federal Signal Corporation TechTip SUBJECT: PELICAN GUIDE WHEEL PIVOT PIN LOCKING PLATE FSO Kit P/N 1069193 Effectivity: Pelican Series P prior to P3666 and Series S prior to S8990 Purpose: Provide instructions for new method to lock guide wheel pivot pin retainer plate bolts. Action: Guide Wheel Retainer Lock Plate FSO # 1069193 is now available for Pelican steering pivots. This retainer should be used to replace any earlier retainer version (wire, lockwasher, etc) used on Pelican Sweepers. Procedure: ALWAYS REFER TO SAFETY SECTION IN OPERATORS MANUAL BEFORE STARTING WORK. FIGURE 1 Discard old lockwashers and bolts. DO NOT use thread lock on new bolts FIGURE 2 Operators and maintenance personnel should frequently review Elgin’s website for Technical Tips and Updates regarding the operation and maintenance of Elgin products. (www.elginsweeper.com) Torque to 30 ft./lbs. GUIDE WHEEL PIVOT Bend one (1) of the tabs against a flat on each cap screw Disassembly instructions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Block front wheels to prevent movement of the machine. On level ground using min 3.5-ton jack, properly jack up rear of sweeper. Remove the guide wheels from the guide wheel assembly. Support the guide wheel assembly for safe removal. Separate the lower strut section from guide wheel pivot by removing the 8 hex head nuts and bolts. Remove 3 hex bolts, lock washers and retainer plate. (Shown in fig. 1) NOTE: Care should be taken before removing the third bolt so as not to separate the assembly. Firmly hold retainer plate and housing so bearings and shims do not separate from assembly. Discard old bolts and lock washers. Assembly instructions: A. If separation occurs as described in disassembly instruction (5) install required shims so as to pre-load bearings to 12 to 15 in. lbs. running torque. B. Install new locking plate and bolts (FSO kit # 1069193) to existing retainer plate in pivot assembly. (Fig. 2) C. Torque bolts to 30-ft. lbs. do not use thread lock. D. With a screwdriver, bend tabs of the locking plate to a flat of each hex head bolt.(Fig. 2) E. Assemble the strut to the pivot assembly. Torque the 8 hex head nut bolt and washers to 170-190-ft. lbs. F. Install wheels back on to guide wheel assembly. G. Inspect steering and guide wheel assembly and functions before lowering unit to the ground. 01/06 0713092-A
