44960 PL Ed.2 2/2/2006 11:51 am Pendant Lamp Holders Standard & Shockguard Plus™ These products all comply with appropriate British & European harmonised Standards Please keep this leaflet for future reference INTRODUCTION • MK has two ranges of pendant lamp holders, standard and Shockguard Plus. • MK also makes a standard angled batten lamp holder, list number 1172 WHI, which is covered by these instructions. • Products in the Shockguard Plus range ensure the lamp holder contact pins are enclosed by a shutter within the lamp holder when a bulb is removed. WARNING Under no circumstances attempt to operate the shutter mechanism to expose the contact pins other than with the correct bayonet type lamp bulb. SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS • This product must be installed by a competent person in accordance with the current editions of the IEE 44960PL Ed.2 Page 1 Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and Buildings Regulations. If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician. • To prevent electrocution, do not work on any appliance live. Turn off the mains supply before commencing work. • To prevent fire hazard do not exceed the rated current. • To ensure the cable restraint grips the cable sufficiently, use only two core circular cable as specified in the installation instructions. • Product and packaging should be disposed of via standard refuse facilities at the end of their life. • When fitted correctly, using specified cable and screw size, the lamp holder is designed to accommodate a shade where the weight must not exceed 3Kg. (Both lamp holders are shown with the shade ring removed) INSTALLING THE LAMP HOLDER 1. Please read the Safety Instructions before starting the installation. 2. Remove the shade ring from the lamp holder. 3. Unscrew the top white cover from the body. See figures 1a.or 1b, as appropriate. 4. For all pendent lamp holders, use heat resisting PVC insulated and sheathed flexible 0.75mm2, 2 core circular cable complying with BS6141 between the Ceiling Rose and lamp holder. 5. Strip back the outer sheath of the supply cable to expose approximately 50mm of the inner conductors. 6. Carefully strip the inner cable insulation to expose 10mm of conductor. If using an existing cable with soldered ends, they should be trimmed back and restripped to expose new clean conductor. On no account should soldered ends enter the terminals. 7. Thread the cable through the hole in the top of the cover. 8. Next pass the cable through the jaws of the clamping piece, as shown in figure 2, and ensure the outer sheath of the cable is captured in the jaws by approximately 3mm. 9. Lightly twist the multi-stranded portion of the wires and fold them back on themselves so the two leads are now only 5mm long. 2 3 Cover Cover Shutter Fig. 1a Standard Fig. 1b Shockguard Plus 10. Connect the supply cables to the two terminals and tighten the clamping screws. 11. Wrap the sleeved portion of the two wires around the cable restraints, as shown in figure 3. 12. Screw the cover back in place. 13. Assemble the light shade onto the lamp holder and hold in place with the shade ring. 3mm Fig. 2 Clamping Jaws Fig. 3 Built in cable restraints INSTALLING THE ANGLED BATTEN LAMP HOLDER 1. Please read the Safety Instructions before starting the installation. 2. Remove the shade ring from the lamp holder. 4 44960 PL Ed.2 2/2/2006 11:51 am Page 2 3. Unscrew the clamping ring, see figure 4. The lamp holder is then free to be withdrawn through the rear of the mounting cover. 4. Before installing the batten lamp holder, chose the position where it can be secured to the wall or ceiling, while being sure to avoid any existing pipe work or wiring. If the product is to be mounted on a combustible material, or there is a need for greater wiring space and/or the number of terminals required, then the surface pattress (List No. 1179) should be used. It is essential that the pattress be used when "looping" is required, in order to provide the required additional earth terminal. 5. When using the batten lamp holder without a patress, first position the angled mounting where required, ensure the base is level then mark and prepare the fixing screw positions for No. 8 screws. 6. Drill and plug the mounting surface to take the No. 8 screws. Take account of the comments made in paragraph 4 above to ensure a safe installation. 7. Carefully strip back the outer sheath of the supply cable to expose approximately 25mm of the inner cables. 8. Carefully strip the inner cable insulation to expose 5mm of conductor. Important note There will normally be an earth conductor included in wall installations. If this is present it should be cut to a similar length as those of the live and neutral cables. 9. An additional terminal is provided on the lamp holder, which can either be used to anchor an earth cable when it is present, or can be used as a loop terminal when the product is mounted on a pattress, see figure 5. See figure 5. 12.Replace the angled mounting over the lamp holder. Orientate and pull the lamp holder forward until it is correctly seated in the mounting and replace the clamping ring. 13.Now fix the assembly in place on the wall using No. 8 screws. 14.Fit the lampshade onto the lamp holder, if required and repalce the shade ring.
