SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine without teacher supervision and the teacher has instructed you on its safe use and operation and has given permission. PRE-USE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Ensure that the electrical power cord, wall receptacles and operating switches are undamaged and in good working condition. 2. Ensure all safety devices and shields are in place and in good working order. 3. Always ensure that the machine is plugged directly into an outlet. DO NOT use and extension cord. 4. Good housekeeping habits must be employed and the floor and surrounding area must be dry and free of tripping hazards. 5. To reduce the risk of severe injury to hands or damage to the machine, ever place hands or utensils into the machine while in use. 6. Ensure the printer is set on a flat, even and steady surface. 7. Ensure additional exhaust ventilation is present to remove the fumes given off by the PLA Filament. 8. Machine must be supervised by a trained teacher at all times while students are working around the equipment.
OPERATING PROCEDURE: 1. Remove the build plate from the printer. 2. Apply the build plate tape and reinstall the build plate back into the printer. 3. Install the filament spool into the back of the printer. Keep the spool tightly wound at all times and ensure that it unspools counter-clockwise. 4. Route the filament into the bottom portion of the guide tube. Cut a clean edge for the filament, at an angle, with a pair of scissors. Feed the end of the filament into the end of the guide tube. 5. Attach the guide tube to the opening on the top of the extruder. 6. Connect your computer to the printer using the USB port on the side of the printer. 7. Plug the AC power cord into an electrical outlet (6.25 amp requirement).

Set the power switch to the ON position. Open the MakerBot DeskTop App. Click on the Add File tab to open a file dialog. Navigate to the location of any STL, OBJ, or Thing file and select the file to add a model to the build plate by clicking Add File. Navigate to the location of your file and click Open and the model will appear on the build plate. Add as many models to the plate as you like. Prepare your model using the Prepare screen to manipulate your mode (orientation, size, etc.) . Click on the Settings Button to determine your print settings. Save the file to the library by clicking on Save to Library. Click on the Export Print File to slice your print and save the .makerbot file to your local computer or attached USB drive. Click Print to slice the model and send the print file to the 3D printer. To monitor your print, click on the Menu Icon at the right side of the status bar to open a print monitor panel. This will show any print in progress, including a feed of images from the on board camera if connected via Wi-Fi. Open the print monitor panel to pause or cancel a print, change the filament or change the smart extruder. Once the file is sent to the 3D printer the Action Button will blink blue. Press the button to confirm the print. The button will glow red indicating it is heating the Extruder head. When fully heated it will start to print. Warning: the extruder head is extremely hot. Once the print job has started do not place hands into the unit. Click on Print Preview to see the estimated print time, amount of filament the print will use and the view of what your print will look like. To pause or cancel a print: press the Action Button once to pause or press and hold the button to cancel the print. Allow the extruder to cool before removing the completed print. Remove the build plate from the printer and wait for the object to cool down. Peel the print from the build plate raft gently. Objects will detach more easily after they have cooled. If the object is stuck, take a thin metal spatula and carefully work the blade under the edge of the object then twist slightly. The object should come free. Allow the printer to cool (extruder head) to 50°C before powering the unit down.
CHANGING THE FILAMENT: 1. The filament can be changed at any time as long as the printer is not heating up or printing. 2. To Load the filament: a) Unload any filament left in the extruder head before reloading. b) Before loading, cut the end of the filament to create a clean angled edge. c) Install the filament spool into the back of the printer. Keep the spool tightly wound at all times and ensure that it unspools counter-clockwise. d) Unclip the filament guide tube from the spool pocket. e) In the print monitor panel, click Change. Then click Load. The extruder will start to heat up. When it is fully heated, the extruder motor will start to turn. f) When you hear the motor turning, grasp the top of the extruder assembly and push the free end of filament into the loading tube at the top of the extruder. Keep pushing on the filament until you feel the extruder pulling it in. g) Wait until you begin to see plastic emerging from the extruder nozzle. Then click Done to stop the process.

h) Clip the guide tube back into place after inserting the new filament. i) Clear away any excess extruded filament before starting to print. 3. To Unload the filament: a) In the print monitor panel, click Change. Then click Unload. The extruder will start to heat up. When it is fully heated, it will go through a two-part unloading process. b) Remove the filament from the extruder only when printer directs you to. Then click Done, c) Unclip the filament guide from the spool pocket and Unload Filament spool from the back of the printer.
CHANGING THE SMART EXTRUDER HEAD: 1. Unload any filament. 2. Wait for the Smart Extruder to cool to 50° C. Caution: Never remove the extruder head during or immediately after printing. The extruder head will be extremely hot. Do not Touch. 3. Pull the extruder head away from the extruder carriage. 4. To install a new extruder head, press it against the back of the extruder carriage, with the connector pins facing the extruder carriage. 5. Magnets will lock the Smart Extruder into place. 6. If MakerBot Desktop doesn’t recognize the Smart Extruder, open the print monitor panel and click Attach Smart Extruder.
If and emergency situation occurs while conducting this task or there is an equipment malfunction, shut the equipment off immediately and unplug it. REPORT ANY HAZARDOUS SITUATION TO YOUR INSTRUCTOR / SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY
