Miss Burns’s Herb Garden

Miss Burns has a garden filled with herbs and flowers. It makes Miss Burns smile. Her friends love the garden, too. 2
Miss Burns is up early today because it is her birthday! “It’s my seventy-third!” says Miss Burns. “Who will visit?” 3
Miss Burns checks her mail. There is nothing in her box. A blue bird chirps. Nothing else makes a peep. 4
Miss Burns picks an herb. It’s green and curly. She puts it in an urn. She feels a bit sad. 5
But then, lots of people came! “Happy birthday!” they yelled. “We did not forget you!” “You didn’t!” Miss Burns cried. “I’m so glad!” 6
Kitten and the Moon Kitten sees her first full moon. She thinks it is a bowl of milk! She chases the moon and jumps in a pond. Kitten’s fur is wet, and she is sad. She goes home and finds a real bowl of milk! Kitten drinks her milk and curls up.

The moon lights up the night sky. It is large and full. It shines on the land below. But it is further away than you might think. And it is NOT a bowl of milk!

My name is Carly. I’m a smart kid. But I do NOT like the dark. I know it will never harm me. But I do NOT like the dark. 10
I try to sleep in the dark. Mom says that I should. But it’s so hard! I do NOT like the dark. Poor me! 11
When I lay my head down, I start to see shapes. I shout, “MOM!” Mom says that the dark can play tricks! 12
It’s just car lights shining on a scarf and a ball. Still, it’s hard to sleep. “I have a plan,” Mom tells me. 13
Mom got me a night-light. She’s so smart! Now I can sleep through the night! I am braver than ever before. 14
Ben Franklin When Ben was just a lad, he started making things. He was curious as well as smart. One day, he made a red kite. His friends had never seen such a thing! But Ben didn’t find it hard to dream up new things!

As Ben got older, he didn’t change. He made a new kind of stove. He made glasses that helped people see close up and far away. Later on, he made a lightning rod. Ben kept on dreaming. His dreams made people’s lives better.

No More Mort the Short!

Mort is smaller than most of the children in his class. So Mort’s pal Cory named him Mort the Short. 18
Mort isn’t good at running or other sports. But he tries hard. He runs until he is worn out. His mom yells, “Stop, Mort!” 19
At school, Mrs. Gore said, “We will have a Math Bee.” Mort’s heart soared. He knew that he would win. 20
Mort did his math from morning until night. He added up the numbers that his mom named. He got each sum right! 21
But Cory gave Mort a hard time. “You won’t win,” she said. “I’m better at math than you are.” 22
That made Mort study more than before! The Math Bee came. Cory did well, but Mort got the Grand Prize! The class roared. 23
The prize was a big, round pin. Cory said, “Now I’ll have to name you Mort the Math Whiz!” 24
Stormy Weather
How can we tell that a storm is on the way? A gray sky can mean that a storm is coming. Soon we see lightning. The lightning is followed by thunder. That means it is time for us to go inside! 25
A snowstorm can form when it is cold. The wind may blow the snow into big piles. In a tornado, strong winds roar with much more force. The winds can pick up trees and cars! What sorts of storms have you seen? Tell about them.

A Proud Brown Ant

A little brown ant had a very big family. The ants seemed the same, but the little brown ant was just a bit smaller than the rest. 28
When it gets cold in most places, ants gather food to be ready for the winter. So all the ants set out fast! The little brown ant was left alone.

“Wait for me,” she shouted. But no one heard a sound. When the little brown ant met up with the rest, they were already on their way back home. 30
The little brown ant frowned. “All the food is gone now. How will I eat?” The ant sat down to rest. She saw something on the ground. 31
The ant got closer. “Great!” she cried loudly. “It’s a big, beautiful hunk of sweet cake. How will I get it home from here? I am much too small.” 32
The ant asked the animals she met for help. Each one told her, “No. I will not help.” “Well,” pouted the ant, “then I’ll have to do it myself!” 33
Crouching down, she lifted the cake up onto her head. Step by step, the ant made it home! The cake would last all winter. The ant had never felt so proud. 34
Fall Is Here! Pinwheel He bumps the tree and makes it shake. Owl shouts at him to stop. Red, yellow, and brown leaves fall on the ground. He thinks he broke the tree! Pinwheel finds out that it is fall. 35
Squirrel He sees the leaves falling down. He also thinks the tree is broken. He jumps down and lands in a big pile of leaves. Wow! Squirrel finds out that it is fall.

Roy’s Rich Soil

Farmer Roy worked in Illinois. He had a nice house and farm. Roy raised fat hogs. Roy’s hogs sure made him joyful. 38
But Roy did not enjoy one thing. His hogs OINKED and OINKED! The noise kept Roy up all night! 39
So Roy sold his hogs to a farmer across town. “My farm has rich soil,” said Roy. “I’ll learn to raise corn.” 40
Roy planted his yellow corn. Soon it was 10 feet high! The next week it reached 30 feet! 41
Roy got rich, thanks to those noisy hogs. “Oh, boy! I’m lucky,” he said. “Illinois has some fine soil for fine corn!” 42
Tiger Cub Grows Up
Tara was born in an animal park. A park worker fed her and hugged her. She was as cute as a toy tiger! Tara drank milk and slept a lot. She made funny grunting and squealing noises while she slept! At 3 weeks old, she got her first teeth.

At 3 months old, Tara went for a checkup. She was a healthy cub, so now she could play outside. Then at 9 months old, Tara joined the grown-up tigers in the park. She enjoyed her new tiger pals a lot!
