Introduction The PHORCE product family is designed to extend the SuperSpeed USB3.0 connections beyond the typical 3 meter reach of copper cables. The unique feature of PHORCE family is its transparent operation. The connected remote USB devices appear as local devices to the host PC. PHORCE system consists of a PHORCE-PC card, which is installed in the PCIe slots in the host computer, and a PHORCE-RE box, which provides two USB3.0 root hub ports at the remote site of the application. The remote USB ports comply with USB3.0 specifications and are backward compatible with USB2.0 devices and platforms. PHORCE also works with USBVision cameras for machine vision applications. KEY FEATURES OF THE PHORCE™ SYSTEM:  Supports the following USB data rate  Super-Speed 5Gb/s  High- Speed 480Mb/s  Full-Speed 12Mb/s  Low-Speed 1.5Mb/s  Up to 150 meter over OM2 MM duplex fiber cable  Up to 100 meter over OM2 MM simplex fiber cable  Available for longer distance with single mode fiber  Low power consumption <1.75W  Secure power connector with locking mechanism  Provide optical isolation  Compact size 2. PHORCE User Manual V1.2 -3- 3. Installation 3.1. Items required for installation PHORCE system requires the following items to complete installation. Figure 1 shows typical setup for PHORCE system. Items Qty Description xHCI driver x1 Texas Instruments xHCI compliant driver for USB3.0 host controller x1 PHORCE-PC is the PCIe card that will be installed in the computer used in the system x1 PHORCE-RE is the stand alone box that will be connected to the USB3.0 devices at the remote site of the system x1 LC duplex multimode optical cable for the desired length. x1 15W, 5V DC power supply Optical Fiber PHORCE-RE Host Computer PHORCE-PC Figure 1 Typical setup for PHORCE system WARNING: The infrared laser beam from the optical output port is invisible to human eyes. Users MUST NOT look directly into the optical I/O port while the unit is connected to power. Failure to do so may cause PERMANENT eye injury. PHORCE User Manual V1.2 -4- 3.2. Installation steps NOTE: For proper operation, please follow the power-on and -off sequence after the installation. STEP 1 Do not connect any USB devices to the PHORCE-RE until the system installation is completed STEP 2 Turn off the computer and install the PHORECE-PC into any available PCIe slot STEP 3 Connect PHORCE-RE and PHORECE-PC with the fiber cable STEP 4 Connect the DC power plug to the PHORCE-RE and the AC/DC power adapter into a suitable AC outlet to power on the module STEP 5 Turn on the computer STEP 6 Install the Texas Instruments xHCI compliant driver included in the package. For Win 7, Vista, XP (both 32 and 64-bit), unzip the driver file from the CD included in the package or download it from www.phrontier-tech.com. Under the TI xHCI Driver directory, run the executable file “TI xHCI Driver.exe”. Do not install the driver from the Device Manager because the installation may fail. For Win 8,use the Microsoft built-in driver STEP 7 Restart the computer and the system is ready to use 4. Operation In order to properly operate the PHORCE system, certain power on/off sequence needs to be followed. This is because the PC BIOS needs to configure the PCIe components (PHORCE-PC) before the operating system boots. After the system boots up, the USB ports on PHORCE-RE fully support USB Hot Plug and Play functionality and user’s USB devices can be powered on/off in any sequence. NOTE: 1. If the fiber cable is disconnected during the operation, the system will not resume operation after re-connecting the cable. To resume the operation, the system has to be rebooted with the proper power-on sequence. 2. The USB ports on the PHORCE-RE module fully support USB hot Plug-and-Play functionality. The connected USB devices DO NOT need to follow the power-on and-off sequence. 4.1. POWER-ON Sequence The computer BIOS needs to configure all PCIe components installed in the computer before the operating system boots. STEP 1 Connect the fiber cable between PHORCE-RE and PHORCE-PC STEP 2 While the fiber cable is connected, power on the PHORCE-RE STEP 3 Power on the computer PHORCE User Manual V1.2 -5- 4.2. POWER-OFF Sequence The computer OS and Drivers assume all PCIe cards are always available. It is recommended to power off the system with the following power-off sequence. STEP 1 While the fiber cable is connected between PHORCE-RE and PHORCE-PC and PHORCE-RE is powered on, turn off the computer STEP 2 Power off the PHORCE-RE 5. Optical Fiber Cable Optical fiber is used to carry optical signals between the PHORCE-PC and PHORCE-RE modules. Fiber cables are not included in the package. You may purchase from Phrontier Technologies or other vendors. There are three types of standard multimode (MM) fibers, which are known as OM1 (62.5/125 m), OM2 (50/125m) and OM3 (50/125m). Both OM1 and OM2 fibers are in orange color but differ in fiber core diameter which cannot be distinguished by human eyes. Cable manufacturers normally specify the type of fiber on the outer jacket of the cable. Otherwise, users need to verify with the manufacturers. The OM3 fiber is in aqua or light blue color. It is newly deployed for 10Gbit Ethernet applications. All three types of MM fibers can be used with Phrontier fiber extenders. However, the maximum transmission distances will vary with the use of different type of MM fibers. The single mode (SM) fiber is normally specified as 9/125 m, which indicates the diameter of the fiber core to be 9 m and the fiber cladding to be 125 m. SM fiber cable is normally color coded in yellow Users need to select the correct optical connector and type of fiber for proper operation. For example, plug a SM fiber into a MM model will result in system failure due to excessive optical power loss at the connectors. If you have any question about selecting optical cables, our sales representatives will be glad to help you. PHORCE User Manual V1.2 -7- 7.
