Click on an area Hold Shift to add to selection Hold Cmd to move the selection Hold Opt to subtract from selection Tolerance sets the range of colors close to the selected color to be included in the selection; the larger the number the greater the range of colors selected • Go to Select > Similar to choose your selected color in other areas of the image Crop tool C Allows you to trim the image • Width and Height allow you to set specific dimensions for your crop • Or, drag to select the area you wish to keep; use the handles to adjust the size; click on a border line and drag to move selected area • To apply, click Return; or right-click (Ctrlclick) and choose Crop • To deselect, right-click (Ctrl-click) and choose Cancel Slice tool C Allows you to divide the image into smaller sections • • • •

Color Replacement tool B Allows you to replace specific colors in your image • Set your replacement color as the foreground color • Choose a brush size, Mode (preferably color), sampling type, Limits and Tolerance • Click and drag over the area to be painted • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to get the Eyedropper tool Mixer Brush tool B Simulates actual brush strokes by mixing colors on the canvas • Choose a brush size, a color, load frequency and preset effects or choose your own Wet, Load and Mix settings • Click and drag across image • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to get the Eyedropper tool
Spot Healing Brush tool J Removes small spots and marks on images by picking up colors from the surrounding area • Choose brush size and drag over the area to be repaired; release mouse button to apply • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke Healing Brush tool J Allows you to repair an image by blending colors • Hold Opt and click on color to blend; click and drag tool over area to be repaired; release the mouse button to apply • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke Patch tool J Allows you to repair a selected area by blending with pixels from another area. • With Source chosen (in Option bar): draw a line around the area to be patched; then drag and drop selection to the area to be used as a patch. The original area is patched. • With Destination chosen (in Option bar): draw a line around the area to be used as a patch; then drag and drop that selection to the area to be patched. The second area will be patched. • Hold Shift to add to the selection • Hold Opt to subtract areas of selection
Content-Aware Move tool J Allows you to extend a selection across an area or move a selection without the use of layers • Hold Shift to add to your selection Red Eye tool J Allows you to remove the red eye in a photograph • Click and drag to draw a box around the eye • In the Options bar, set the Pupil Size and/or the Darkness • Hold Shift to constrain your selection • Hold Opt to draw a box from the center Brush tool B Allows you to paint the foreground color on an image in soft strokes • • • •

Art-History Brush tool Y Allows you to apply stylized strokes to your image • Choose your options, then in the History panel, click in the left column for the state you wish to use as the source • Drag over the area of the image that you wish to change • Click Shift to constrain your stroke Eraser tool E Allows you to erase parts of the current layer • Click and drag over image; release mouse button to apply • Click Shift to constrain your stroke • Choose a History state and click Opt to erase to a specific History state Background Eraser tool E Allows you to erase more solid areas from around sharply defined edges of objects in an image • Click and drag over area in image you wish to erase • Click Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to get the Eyedropper tool E Magic Eraser tool Allows you to erase by color
• Click on a color to erase all contiguous instances of it • Set Tolerance to include variations of the color • Hold Opt to get the Eyedropper tool Gradient tool G Applies a gradual blend between the foreground and background colors • Choose style of gradient, Mode and Opacity • Drag a line to mark the starting and ending points of the gradient • Click Shift to constrain your stroke to 45 degree increments • Hold Opt to return to the Eyedropper tool

Paint Bucket tool G Allows you to change the color of areas in your image to the foreground color or a pattern • Choose your options, then click on the area you want to re-color • With any selection tool, select an area; click in it with the Paint Bucket tool; areas in the selection will re-color, based on where in the selection you clicked • Hold Opt to return to Eyedropper tool
Blur tool Softens hard edges or blurs details • Click and drag over area you wish to blur • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to sharpen areas Sharpen tool Sharpens soft edges in your image • Click and drag over area you wish to sharpen • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to blur areas

Smudge tool Allows you to pick up color where the stroke begins and push it in the direction you drag • Click and drag over area you wish to smudge • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to smudge with the foreground color Dodge tool O Allows you to lighten areas of the image • Choose your options, then drag over the area you wish to lighten • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt key to darken the image
Convert Point tool Allows you to change curve point to corner point • Click and release on the point you wish to change to a corner point • Click point and drag to change back to curve • Hold Cmd and drag to move point Horizontal Text tool T Allows you to enter text on a horizontal line Choose tool and set font, style, size and color Click and type Select layer and use Move tool to move text Hold Cmd to get bounding box and drag on sides to distort • To position text on a path, click Text tool on path and type (see Direct Selection tool for more options) • • • •
Pen tool P Allows you to draw curved lines • Click where you want points to be; use handles to adjust curve • Hold Shift to limit segments to 45 degree angles • Hold Cmd on a point to drag it • Cmd-click away from segment to stop adding points and leave path open • Small circle appears by tool when path will close • Position over the path and the tool changes to the Add Anchor Point tool; position over anchor point and the tool changes to Delete Anchor Point tool
Freeform Pen tool P Allows you to draw free form objects • Small circle appears by tool when path will close • Click Opt on path to access curve handles Add Anchor Point tool Allows you to add anchor points to a path • Click on path to add point • Hold Opt and drag to duplicate path with anchor points Delete Anchor Point tool Allows you to delete anchor points from a path • Click on an anchor point to delete it • Hold Opt to convert to Add Anchor Point tool

Burn tool O Allows you to darken areas of the image • Choose your options, then drag over the area you wish to darken • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke • Hold Opt to lighten the image Sponge tool O Allows you to increase or decrease saturation of color in an area. • Choose your options, then drag over the area you wish to change • Hold Shift to constrain your stroke Vertical Type Mask tool T Allows you to create a selection in the shape of vertical type • Create a new layer, then choose your options • Type and click the checkmark in the upper right to apply • Fill as you would any selection Path Selection tool A Allows you to select a path • Click on the path • Hold Shift to toggle between visible and hidden anchor points • Hold Cmd to change to Direct Selection tool to change path shape Direct Selection tool A Allows you to select a path segment • Click on the path • Hold Shift to toggle between visible and hidden anchor points • Hold Cmd to change to Path Selection tool to move the path • Use this tool to flip text on a path by dragging over it Shape tools U Allows you to draw shapes • Hold Shift to constrain shape • Hold Cmd to move shape • Hold Opt to draw shape from center

Foreground and Background colors Return to default
