PlainAMP is the latest generation of easy to integrate and highly audiophile Class-D audio amplifiers on a single module. It allows easy and fast building of prototypes and reduces time-to-market significantly when used in the final product. Also reduces cost thanks to the integrated 5V DC/DC converter for downstream supply. Best audio quality due to digital I2S input and high quality filter components on the output side. Two ultra low noise LDO’s feeding the amplifier IC offering reduced ripple. Also incorporates advanced protection features such as overvoltage and ESD protection, inrush current limitation and a polyfuse. Thanks to the integrated I2C temperature sensor you can easily watch how warm the PCB gets and e.g. limit volume in a critical state. Great for small and close housings. PlainAMP features robust power input and speaker output connectors with locking mechanism to prevent malfunctions due to loose cables.

ESD Protection PlainAMP features advanced ESD protection. Great care was taken during development to implement useful protection to minimize potential ESD damage. There are two 5 channel 3V3 unidirectional TVS diodes to protect all the digital input and output signal pins.
Inrush Current Limiter On PlainAMP there are some large capacitors with about 900 uF in sum. To prevent excessive current draw from the supply when first powered it incorporates a special circuit that allows slowly charging the downstream capacitance before fully attaching it to the input. No further attention is needed.
Overvoltage Protection To prevent any damage to the integrated components there is an overvoltage protection circuit. If the circuit detects an overvoltage condition of 24.8 V or more it will immediately interrupt the power supply. As soon as the input power returns to its recommended range (8 – 24 V) it will automatically close again.
Reverse Current Protection The standard version of PlainAMP comes with reverse current protection in the output of the integrated 5V DC/DC converter. On request it is available with reverse current protection on the amplifier supply input and an expanded maximal rating of the input voltage. Please contact us for details.

I2C Temperature Sensor Next to the TAS5756 amplifier IC there is a LM75 I2C temperature sensor. It helps to keep an eye on the board temperature when operating under hard conditions. It is recommended to check the the temperature every 5 to 10 seconds. This is really helpful in small and closed housings where space and cooling is limited. It is e.g. possible to implement a watchdog function that lowers the volume before the amplifier goes into protection mode the “hard way”. We cannot recommend a temperature threshold as this really depends on the usage scenario.
Integrated 5V DC/DC converter PlainAMP incorporates the newest generation of buck converters with super high energy density. It accepts any input voltage from 8 to 28 V and can output 2 A on a very efficient way. It is directly connected to a small reverse protection circuit that makes it save to have more than one 5V source within a single system.
General Usage Guidelines The PlainAMP module can be used for prototyping and small volume manufacturing. Before using PlainAMP always make sure that you have understood and compile with your local laws and regulatory regarding prototyping with electronic devices. PlainAMP is NOT sold as a final and/or certified end product. It is designed to work best when using the 40 pin FPC input connector either in combination with our PolyCore1 platform or one of the adapter boards. Remember that when using the unpopulated P2 header for feeding the digital signals you are creating little stubs on the PCB between P1 and P2. This is okay for prototyping but you should keep that in mind when feeding high frequency master clocks.

Setup and Operating Instructions Always disconnect any power supplies before attaching or removing cables! Either connect the PlainAMP module to your host system using a 40 pin FPC cable or jumper wires. Also connect your speakers to PlainAMP. After double checking all cables for their correct position insert the power supply and you should see your host start booting if it is powered via the 5V output of PlainAMP. PlainAMP is equipped with a TAS5756 amplifier IC from Texas Instruments. In general, this is a package that combines an I2S DAC (very similar to the PCM51XX devices) and a Class-D amplifier in one single IC. That means all of the available software for PCM512X or PCM514X can and should be used for configuration and volume control. This driver is available in mainline Linux kernel and also in a lot of custom ones. The PlainAMP board contains two devices that communicate through the I2C bus. One of them is the amplifier IC itself and the other one is the temperature sensor. In standard configuration the TAS5756 is available on address 0x4c and the LM75 on 0x48. By closing the onboard jumper both addresses can be changed to 0x4d and 0x49. This allows combining up to two standard PlainAMPs. Other addresses available on request.
Using the embedded miniDSP TAS5756 features an integrated DSP that can be loaded with custom instructions during runtime. It allows fast and click free switching between two instruction banks. Allows customers to implement e.g. digital crossover configurations and/or finetuning (EQ) of the connected speakers. For the moment please refer to SLAU577a from Texas Instrument and the TAS5754 datasheet for how to configure the DSP.
