WOOD PELLET INFORMATION DAY Planning, operating and maintaining a pellet boiler/stove installation Thursday 16th April 2009 Rory McConnon – Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (Association of Irish Energy Agencies) Location: Teagasc Oakpark, Carlow Contents „ Domestic Pellet stove „ Domestic / Commercial Pellet boiler Planning Operation & Maintenance Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) General system components „ Fuel supply & storage „ Fuel distribution „ Stove or boiler Heat distribution system „ Manual or automatic Fuel combustion system „ Bags or bulk storage – frequency Convection, Radiators or underfloor Controls Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Stoves „ Room heating only / include boiler for water heating „ Different proportions of space/water heating From 80% boiler : 20% room heating to 100% room heating Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet stove - Planning „ Floor protection – Size and Material „ Venting – 15-30cm minimum clearance „ Outside air for combustion – Building Regulations – Parts F (VENT) & J (HPA) „ Access – maintenance and cleaning „ Electrical requirements – power connection & connection to DHW/Space heating controls Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet stove - Planning Pellet Stove Description A) Pellet holder B) Combustion chamber C) Ash box D) Control panel E) Firebox For the stove to work correctly, pellets must have the following characteristics: A D B E ƒ6mm diameter ƒmaximum 30 mm long ƒmax. humidity content: 8-9% ƒCEN/TS 14961:2005 – Solid Biofuels • Keep the pellets in a dry place. • Do not empty the bag directly into the tank Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) C Pellet stove – O&M „ Before each start – vacuum firebox of residues from the previous combustions. „ Every 3-4 working days - completely clean the stove „ Ash box - should be emptied weekly or whenever necessary „ Flue - cleaned at least twice a year at the beginning and half way through the winter season „ Every year: service by authorised service agent Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – Planning The main components to consider when planning a wood pellet heating system include : Fuel storage and handling system 2. The burner / boiler 3. Boiler House requirements 4. Ancillary equipment 1. Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – Planning Fuel storage and handling system „ Volume - limited by Costs and space availability. (1tonne pellets = 500Loil = 1.8m3) Typical Domestic hopper size 3.5 - 4 tonne or approx. 2x2x2m volume „ Moisture and quality protection - the storage facility must be able to protect the wood against excessive moisture and contamination. „ Access - for pellet delivery - blown pellets ~20m „ Fire protection - The storage facility should not be open to sparks or other means of ignition. „ Visual impact – screened or integrated into surrounding building style Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – Planning Burner/boiler requirements Sized for ~85% of heat needs Accumulator tank or fossil peak The technical specifications for the boiler should consider issues such as: 70000 „ CEN 50000 303-5 - performance, efficiency, emissions, thermal output, pressure testing, safety measures and testing „ Output: capacity, temperature & pressure requirements. „ Efficiency: Boilers should have an efficiency of at least 80%. Emissions: With proper air:fuel control, fumes should not be visible. „ Operating life: 200,000 operating hours with proper maintenance „ Level of automation: automatic ignition, ash compaction and removal, heat exchanger and flue gas pipe cleaning. Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) 60000 Space Heating 40000 30000 20000 10000 Hot Water 0 J F M A M J J A S O N D Pellet Boiler – Planning Boiler House requirements Boiler, Fuel feed system, Control panel, Accumulator, and storage for consumables, facilitate expansion of the system. The boiler house will be connected to the following utilities: „ Electricity – for lighting and to run the fuel feed system, pumps and control equipment „ Telecoms - modem connection to (computer /mobile phone) - alarm system, usage, controls „ Fresh Water – system supply and for cleaning Boiler house layout usually designed by supplier. Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – Planning Ancillary equipment requirements Generally supplied in conjunction with the boiler and is designed and sized to meet standard requirements based on boiler size and type. „ Fuel feed system – „ Flue: will be determined by planning and hygiene considerations. „ Control system: Automatic ignition based on thermostat, automatic optimisation of air fuel ratio, warning system - fuel level, fire protection option for remote monitoring. „ Metering: Solid-state electronic heat meters Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – O&M Task Frequency Ash removal Weekly Check fuel level Weekly/Monthly Regular user visual checks Check for loose moving parts 3 months Lubricate moving parts 3 months Check exhaust system, pumps and fans 3 months Change cooling oil 3 months Check monitoring and control system 3 months Check chimney and flue gas ducting 3 months Verify and adjust the system settings, gauges and meters 3 months Annual Maintenance by Authorised Service Agent Clean fuel storage bin and fuel feed system Annually Clean the heat exchanger & exhaust pipes Annually Clean bearings, fans and motors Annually Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Pellet Boiler – Conclusions „ Consider space availability – delivery & storage „ Boiler/Stove size – peak load, DHW/Space „ Ensure sufficient clearance – circulation & maintenance „ Visual impact „ Automation Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie) Thank you Rory McConnon Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency Castle Hill, Carlow, Ireland tel: +353 (0)59 9143871 fax: +353 (0)59 9143290 email: [email protected] web: www.ckea.ie Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (www.ckea.ie)
