PlateSpin Recon Overview How PlateSpin Recon Collects Data – Recon has three sequential stages to data collection 1. Discovery - Gathers basic data about what machines are in your environment 2. Inventory - Gathers more detailed information about the actual workloads 3. Monitoring - Gathers performance data on an on-going basis 11 © 2011 NetIQ Corporation. All rights reserved. PlateSpin Recon Overview Licenses – Licensing applies limits during inventory and monitoring, but not during discovery • Discovery - No license needed • Inventory - Licenses are free but must be requested • Monitoring - Paid licenses are required for each workload 12 © 2011 NetIQ Corporation. Section 3 Gathering Utilization Data Gathering Utilization Data Monitoring ● Monitoring is the third stage after discovery and inventory Monitoring • After machines are inventoried they can be monitored • Gathers resource utilization data • The servers should be monitored for as long as possible to get as accurate a utilization picture as possible 27 © 2011 NetIQ Corporation. All rights reserved. Gathering Utilization Data Monitoring ● You can discover, inventory and start monitoring all in one step using a Post-Inventory option 28 © 2011 NetIQ Corporation. All rights reserved. Gathering Utilization Data Monitoring ● Monitoring Procedure • Uses different methods depending on target • For Windows uses Windows Performance Counter API • For Linux and Unix runs a script • For ESX and Virtual Center uses their APIs and services • Every 5 minutes takes 3 samples 3 seconds apart from all counters which are then averaged to a data point that is stored in the database for 30 days • These values can be modified • These data points are then summarized to 1 hour data points which are stored permanently in the database 29 © 2011 NetIQ Corporation.
