Introduction
R The PLC Stamp 1200 micro gives your application access to powerline communication based on the HomePlug AV2TM Chip QCA7500. You can realize point-to-point and multi-point connections depending on your application. The data will be transmitted as Ethernet packets over the power line. This gives you the opportunity to use TCP/IP or whatever network protocols you wish to use. The evaluation kit includes the PLC Stamp 1200 micro evaluation board as well as an Ethernet daughterboard - this is everything you need for evaluation of power line communication with the PLC Stamp 1200 micro. The evaluation board contains the required galvanic isolation from the power line as well as the power supply. The segmentation into the evaluation board and daughter board was done to allow you to test other modes of the QCA7500 as well as to design your own prototypes based on your favorite hardware on the R(G)MII signals. The included daugther board is used to configure and demonstrate the QCA7500 MAC mode and includes Buttons and LEDs for interaction with the user. Features: R AV2TM compatible PLC-Chip QCA7500 • based on the HomePlug

2.1
Handling
This electronic component is sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD).
The circuitry on the board can be connected to mains voltage. To avoid electrical shock do not use this product while the enclosure is opened.
3
Overview
The block diagram in Figure 2 shows the components included on the evaluation board additionally to the PLC Stamp 1200 micro. The only required connections are IEC connector for the power supply and a RJ45 ethernet cable to a gigabit ethernet enabled device.

main PCB Power Supply
The PLC Stamp 1200 micro EVB can be powered via mains voltage over a standard IEC connector. But under some circumstances it may be necessary to connect an external power supply to the module directly instead of the mains voltage. The external supply can be connected to JP2(+3V3) and JP4(GND) as shown in Figure 3. Please refer to PLC Stamp 1200 micro datasheet for power supply requirements.

MAIN PCB
The main PCB of the EVK has two switches. SW1 is connected to the QCA7500 GPIO0. While the QCA7500 is booting and this switch is pressed QCA7500 will enter the bootloader mode. SW2 is connected to the QCA7500 reset pin.
4.3
Connectors
The main PCB of the evaluation board has two connectors. One IEC connector for the power line and powerline network and the other one to connect a daugther board. The IEC has the standard pin out for mains with L, N and PE. Daughther board connector: The daugther board connector is a hermaphroditic Samtec LSS-130-02-L-DV-A connector. Pin 1 of the main PCB connects to pin 2 of the daugther board PCB.

Transformers
The evaluation board contains two transformers with 1:3:4 (TX:PL:RX) turns ratio for MIMO and SISO coupling. The powerline signals can be disconnected from mains by removing all the 0 Ohm resistors (Figure 4 R2,R3,R9, R10,R11,R13,R14,R15) between PLC Stamp 1200 micro and the coupling transformers TR1, TR2. For MIMO Powerline Communication both transformers should be connected to 0 Ohm resistors between PLC Stamp 1200 micro and the coupling-transformers. For SISO Powerline Communication only the transformer TR1 should be connected. TR1 is for coupling the powerline signals between mains L and mains N. TR2 couples the powerline signals between mains L and mains PE.

Powerline Coupling

MAIN PCB
Powerline Coupling
To get the AV2 signals on the mains wires you have to couple them via various components. The schematic in this section shows a possible connection to mains. The optocoupler for zero cross detection always needs to be connected to mains if you need it.
Figure 4: PLC Coupling circuitry For further information about the coupling circuit please refer to the Qualcomm Atheros QCA7500 documentation or contact I2SE for design support.

Dead Wire Communication

ETHERNET DAUGHTER BOARD
Dead Wire Communication
To enable dead wire communication (the communication over otherwise unused wires) and disable PLC coupling to mains voltage desolder resistors R16 ... R21 as shown in Figure 4. Those resistors are located on the PCB as shown in the assembly plan Figure 5 marking a). The dead wires can now be connected to the wire pads marked in the assembly plan Figure 5 marking b). You do not need to solder anything to ”PE” if you want to use a two wire connection opposed to a three wire (MIMO) connection. However: please be aware of the degradation in performance if doing so.
Figure 5: Dead Wire Communication Connection Please note that you void the warranty of the product if you choose to desolder these resistors.

Power On Configuration
The Power On Configuration for PLC Stamp 1200 micro is done with pull up and pull down resistors on the Ethernet daugther board for MAC mode and RGMII speed.
