2 What Is New in PLOSSYS netdome 4.4.0?
2
What Is New in PLOSSYS netdome 4.4.0?
........................................................................................................................................................
conversion service
The preprocessing of the jobs (gates) has been renovated completely and uses now a conversion service running on a JBoss application server. With this, a higher performance and a better utilization of resources are possible. The old process via the gates can still be used in parallel if required or if the specific gate has not yet been replaced by a converter. ........................................................................................................................................................
monitored input directory
The new process via the conversion server makes a difference between the converters and the monitored input directories. The conversion service monitors the input directories and passes the jobs to a suitable converter. ........................................................................................................................................................
configuration
The conversion service and the converters are configured using the web-based configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings (short: PNE; German: PLOSSYS netdome Einstellungen). The configuration is held in the database of the PLOSSYS netdome system. Therefore, editing configuration files for the converters is no longer required. ........................................................................................................................................................
logging
The conversion service does not write log files to the file system, but stores its messages in the database of the PLOSSYS netdome system. The logs can be evaluated via PLOSSYS OCON. ........................................................................................................................................................
new cover and missing sheets
The cover sheets previously created in the set gate using GKSM templates now use the standards XML and XSL-FO. With this, the layouts of the additional sheets can be created using modern tools and Unicode is supported by default. This also applies to the error sheets which can be generated in the case of conversion errors. ........................................................................................................................................................
LPR daemon
PLOSSYS netdome can operate as LPR daemon, so that the client systems can assign jobs via LPR. ........................................................................................................................................................
IPP support
PLOSSYS netdome can operate as IPP server and accept jobs via IPP. The transfer to the output devices is also possible using the IPP protocol. ........................................................................................................................................................
output method PUTPJL
Using the PUTPJL output method, both secure printing output and restarting at a specific page in the case of error can be implemented. ........................................................................................................................................................

........................................................................................................................................................
Older versions of PLOSSYS OCON are possible with PLOSSYS netdome 4.4.0, however, the functionality of PLOSSYS netdome 4.4.0 is missing then.
hint
........................................................................................................................................................
If the installed version of PostgreSQL is less than 8.4.0.1, the data\postgresql directory must be deleted. This is indicated when starting PLOSSYS netdome.

Converter or Gate?
........................................................................................................................................................
In new installations, all conversions that are possible over the new process (converter) are executed using this process.
new installation
........................................................................................................................................................
Some few conversions (such as hpglgate) still need the gate process. In the configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings, you can see which conversions must be executed using the old process (gate).
old process
........................................................................................................................................................
As input directories, the former gate directories can be used. Default is that all jobs are collected here and are processed then.
input directory
........................................................................................................................................................
When updating, changing the preprocessing to the new process (converter) is not mandatory. However, it makes sense because the new process is essential faster than the old one and can manage "problematic" files better, too.
hint
........................................................................................................................................................
The main gate and the star gate are changed to the new process (converter) automatically.

Configuration Interface
........................................................................................................................................................
web-based user interface
For configuring the conversion service, the converter and the gates and for changing the old process (gate) to the new process (converter), the web-based configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings, is available. ........................................................................................................................................................
call
The configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings, is opened via http:/ with server specifying the server where the PLOSSYS netdome server is running.

Changing the Old Process (Gate) to the New One (Converter)
........................................................................................................................................................
Changing one gate after the other makes sense, in particular if you do this for the first time. Beginning with the gate which has the fewest customizations is the best way.
procedure
........................................................................................................................................................
scripts and maingate.pl are still supported. They can be customized using the configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings.
gate_ched.pl
gate scripts
........................................................................................................................................................
More complex gate_ched.pl scripts must be tested in any case. In particular, it could happen that some Perl libraries, which were included via gate25.pl before, are no longer available in gate_ched.pl. These must be included explicitly then.
test
........................................................................................................................................................
When editing, note that the .../${ENV.PLSGT}/.../gate_ched.pl scripts are possibly called by several converters: color/gate_ched.pl GIF to PDF, JPEG to PDF, PDF to PDF, PS to PDF, XSLT:FO to PDF tiff/gate_ched.pl CALS to PDF, MIL to TIFF, TIFF to PDF
Caution: several converters
........................................................................................................................................................
Via the old process (gate), PDF/A could be generated, for example in the color gate. This is no longer possible over the new process (converter). Now, PDF/A can only be generated via the output queue.
Caution: PDF/A

Logging
........................................................................................................................................................
database
Because the log messages are now saved in the database, viewing them using PLOSSYS OCON is the best way. In the previous log directory, you no longer find all required information. ........................................................................................................................................................
export
The new script, logexport.pl, collects the log messages according to certain criteria. With -h, the usage is output. ........................................................................................................................................................
delete (clrlog)
Because the logs (log messages) are saved in the database, the database must be running when executing clrlog. If the database is not running, it will be started automatically. ........................................................................................................................................................
Caution: not deleted
cannot delete all log files in data\log when the system is running due to some are being accessed in this case. clrlog
........................................................................................................................................................
files (clrplots)
For clrplots, JBoss and PLOSSYS netdome must not be running, but the database must be running. If the database is not running, it will be started automatically. ........................................................................................................................................................
-dbonly
parameter
For clrlog and clrplots, the new parameter -dbonly is available. For more information about it, call the correspondent script with -h. ........................................................................................................................................................

Assignment Using the IPP Interface
........................................................................................................................................................
Using the IPP interface, jobs can be passed to PLOSSYS netdome. However, not all header parameters are supported at the moment.
pass job
........................................................................................................................................................
This is how you output an output job using the IPP interface:
call
%PLSTOOLS%\ipp\ippclient.pl -nodialog -uri http://IPP-SERVER:PORT/printers/PLS_SERVER:PRINTER -jobname NAME -username USER –copies NN –filetype MIMETYPE GRAPH
with: IPP-SERVER: PORT: PLS_SERVER: PRINTER: NAME: USER: NN: MIMETYPE:
GRAPH:
Server where the IPP server is running; usually, the PLOSSYS netdome server Port via which the IPP server can be reached; default is 631 on Windows and 2631 on UNIX and Linux. Server where PLOSSYS netdome is running Output device; is passed as PLS_PLOTTER. Name of the job User name; is passed as PLS_USER. Number of copies; is passed as PLS_PLOTCOPY reduced by 1. MIME type describing the file format of the document to be output; is passed as PLS_PLOTTYPE. The special value application/seal-native is mapped to NATIVE. If nothing is specified, PLOSSYS netdome evaluates the file format. Path and name of the graphic file to be passed to PLOSSYS netdome
........................................................................................................................................................
Other header parameters are not supported at the moment.

What Am I Doing If ...
8.1
... I Want to Catch the Files of a Job?
(Previous: via gatestop gate and gatestart gate) • Deactivate the input directories (in the configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings) • Or call java -jar omngcli.jar -stop/start
8.2 • • •
... My Job Is Not Output?
In PLOSSYS OCON, check if the job can be found and, if this is the case, check the log file Or call logexport.pl -time dnumber_days or -time hnumber_hours Or call logexport.pl –plotid PLOTID or logexport.pl –job JobNo if PLOTID or JobNo is known
8.3
... the Job Files Disappear Although the Gate Has Been Stopped?
(Scenario: A gate is still using the old process.) • In the configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings, check if the input directory is monitored by the conversion service, this means if the input directory is active.
8.4 •
... the Job Files Disappear Although the Converter Has Been Stopped?
In the configuration interface, PLOSSYS netdome Settings, check if the input directory is still active.
(Background: As long as the input directory is being active, the job files are fetched by the conversion server and moved to data\omng\..., regardless of whether the converter is running or not. Therefore, deactivating the input directory is important instead of stopping the converter.)
8.5 • •
... the Database Does Not Start?
Increase the kernel parameter SHMMAX. Call the setmaxdbconnections.pl script alternatively. The script adjusts the database configuration to the server configuration.
(Background: The maximum number of database connections in the data base configuration does not match to the configuration of the kernel parameter.)
