The PM500A is an analog power meter which combines speed and accuracy with versatility and ease of use. When connected to one of the PowerMax series of intelligent power probes, the small, portable, and battery operated PM500A automatically configures itself for that particular probe. The PM500A features an easy-to-read analog meter. Operator controls include a manual zero control and a range selection switch. There is a switch selectable battery check function. 1 Controls Probe Zero Adjust Analog Meter Meter Zero Adjustment Range Selector Power/Battery Check Use the Probe Zero Adjust to adjust for ambient thermal effect for any attached probe. Read power levels on this 3½” mirrored scale. Adjust to account for mechanical offset in the analog meter. Adjust range from 1 mW to 10 kW. Note that each detector operates over 3 to 4 decades of range from 1 mW to 10 kW. Activate and deactivate the PM500A, as well as test the internal battery level with this switch. 2 Operation Measuring laser power using a PowerMax thermopile probe is easy with the PM500A. It automatically searches for an attached thermopile probe upon power-up. An attached probe is queried for the correct conversion factor and the EM500A is ready to go. Warning: Follow all safety procedures. Laser must be blocked or switched off before beginning this procedure. Caution: Do not exceed the power limit for the thermopile probe as defined in the probe's data sheet. 1. Place the PowerMax probe in the path of the laser beam in such a way that the beam will strike the center of the probe surface when power is restored or the laser is unblocked. 2. Connect the detector to the 25-pin connector on the side of the PM500A. 3. Switch on the PM500A. Slide the Power/Battery Check Switch to the right to verify the battery condition. Full scale reading equals 10 VDC. Replace the battery if the reading is less than 5.5 VDC 4. Switch the laser on or unblock the beam. Verify proper positioning of the probe. 5. Switch the laser off or block the beam. 6. Use the Probe Zero Adjust control to set the meter reading to 0. This eliminates any ambient thermal conditions. 7. Switch the laser on or unblock the beam and wait for the PM500A to settle on the new, accurate reading. If the PM500A responds too slowly to power changes, activate Display Speedup. 3 Maintenance Calibration Mechanical Zero Molectron Detector calibrates each PM500A to the described specifications and recommends annual recalibration. Calibration is fully NIST traceable. Contact Molectron Detector, Inc. for more information or to schedule a calibration. The PM500A front panel features a mechanical zero adjustment. The value is factory set, but in the event of strong mechanical shock, the zero may have to adjusted. Switch the PM500A off and disconnect any detectors before adjusting the zero. Probe Connector A PowerMax probe mates with the PM500A through a user-replaceable connector. After many connections, the connector may become worn. Replace the connector in this event by removing it from the PM500A, using the appropriate hex driver. Replace it with a female-to-female DB25 gender changer, available from many computer and electronics dealers or from Molectron (part number 2111-0020). Mechanical Zero Adjustment Screw 4 Maintenance Display Speedup The PM500A features an electronic circuit to speed up response time. The circuit is factory enabled by a jumper across test points 4 and 5. To disable the speed up circuit: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. First contact the factory to prevent voiding the warranty by opening the meter case. Switch the unit OFF and remove the battery from rear compartment to prevent shorting the unit while it is open. Remove the ZERO and range selection knobs using a 1/16" hex key. Remove the four rear corner screws, and remove the top enclosure cover. Move jumper to test points 3 and 4. The illustration shows the factory setting. Move the jumper one position to the right. Reassemble the unit, making certain the sliding plastic cover remains over the power switch. Display Speedup Selection Jumper Note: When attaching Range knob, align the knob pointer with the flat edge of the shaft. 5 PM500A-2 The PM500A-2 is a PM500A with two additional features, an AC adapter plug and an analog output. AC Adaptor Analog Output The PM500A-2 ships with a separate AC Adaptor, useful to conserve battery power and when batteries simply aren’t available. The Analog Output BNC connector on the side of the PM500A-2 supplies 0 - 1 VDC, representing the percentage of the full scale reading. For example, if the PM500A-2 is measuring in the 300 mW range and the output of the Analog Out is 0.68 V, the power reading is 68% of the full scale or 204 mW (0.68 * 300 = 204). 6 Compatible Probes and Ranges 7 Specifications Battery Life (Alkaline) 100+ hours Battery Life (Heavy Duty) 75+ hours Battery Life (Carbon-Zinc) 50+ hours Accuracy (Electronics) ± 0.25% Calibration Uncertainty (Analog Meter) ± 2% Calibration Uncertainty (System) ± 3% (± 5% for non-calibrated wavelength) Full Scale Ranges Display Dimensions (H x W x D) Weight System Resolution System Response Time 1mW to 10kW (15 ranges) 3½", mirrored 101.6mm x 205.74mm x 63.5mm (4" x 8.1" x 2.5") 2.20 kg (1 lb) 1 mW (with PM10 detector), 0.05 mW (with PM3 detector) Maximum 2 seconds to within 2% of final value (with speed-up circuit enabled, for most <300 W detectors) 8 Lifetime Warranty Molectron Detector, Inc., warrants the PowerMax™ 500A Laser Power Meter to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of shipment when properly installed, maintained, and used for its intended purpose. This warranty applies only to the original purchaser of the equipment, and only so long as the equipment is used in the country to which it was originally shipped by Molectron Detector. This warranty is null and void if the user attempts to service the equipment himself (other than performing the maintenance described in the Operator Manual), or if service is performed by persons who are neither trained nor authorized to do so by Molectron Detector. If, after examination by a Molectron Service Representative, the unit is found to be defective within the period specified above, and Molectron Detector is satisfied that the failure was due to defective materials and/or workmanship, Molectron Detector will, at its option, repair or replace the defective parts without charge. Molectron Detector reserves the right to make the necessary repair/replacement in its own factory, at any authorized repair station, or at the facilities of the purchaser of the instrument. Any shipping charges incurred shall be paid by the purchaser. The Express Warranty above is the sole warranty obligation of Molectron Detector and the remedy provided above is in lieu of any and all other remedies.
